At this price, it might actually be a better buy than 3600, because with 3600, you will have to buy an aftermarket cooler for ~$40

    • While I won't argue with your reasonable argument, I still think it is best to go with 3600 as most people are merely upgrading not getting into AMD. But more importantly, it feels better to overclock than running on stock! lol.

      • But both 3600 and 3600x can't really overclock in any meaningful way, definitely not worth doing given the temperature and very marginal increase in performance.I have always overclocked where there is room, I have unlocked a Phenom II X3 710's fourth core and turned it into X4 and OC'd it to 3.4Ghz, back in the day… :)

I feel like AMD has already binned and factory-overclocked their chips aggressively to obtain the max frequencies before they got shipped out of the factory

        • Good olden days! Where you could do charm, turning non-SLI boards to SLI motherboards and 3 core CPUs to 4 cores! They are bygone now! However, I just bought a 3200G (which is one generation behind) and it overclocks like there is no tomorrow! Made me interested in overclocking again!

  • Is it even worth getting the 3600 series over say, the 9600k? I keep seeing people posting saying there has been major mobo/ram problems and the price of 3600 ram is ridiculous.. Would love some feedback tahnks guys :)

    • it really depends on what you're going to do, gaming or work. if you're gonna just game, the 3600/x would be a better buy, due to more cores for games to use. for work related stuff, it depends on the programs you use. some applications are more geared towards intel than amd and vise versa.

i believe the only issues with the mobos are:
      - previous gen mobos. some have difficulty with bios flashes
      - second thing is a bug preventing linux from functioning properly

for ram, you dont need 3600mhz, 3200 mhz is just fine. aim for that and you should be fine. 3600mhz ram is if you want to get the max amount of performance out, but the difference between 3200mhz and 3600mhz is neglect-able.
hope this answers your questions. if anyone else wants to correct or add on to what i said, feel free to.

      • I will be mostly using for gaming (LoL, CS:GO, probably some AAA titles but mainly the former 2) I was thinking the 3600X and buying that G skill 3200 ram that was posted for $106, I was also looking at buying the tomahawk max mobo which will be flashed prior to shipment

        • oof, seems like you're set. since you dont really play a lot of games, either will be fine! mobo looks good, and i believe the ram you chose is great too.
if you ever need to flash the mobo again, you can do it with a usb - benefits of going with msi.

i should probably get around building my 3600x soon haha

        • Intel 990k/9700k wins at gaming unless you get the AMD 3900x which is on par and better at time, and should get better over coming years.
AMD is better for all productivity unless getting the lower end cpu's.

Not quite. More cores is better for productivity (running lots of simultaneous apps, or apps designed to use multiple cores/threads).

For gaming, it's single thread performance that really matters.

As for RAM, you're absolutely right, although you'll find most 3200 RAM can be easily ran at 3600 anyway.

        • It will be used for gaming primarily, the only other activities I will be doing will be watching youtube videos, twitch streams and general internet browsing (which shouldn't be a factor as they are not strenuous activities?) I am thinking realistically $330 for this CPU which has a decent enough cooler for my usage, will have more value (a look at benchmarks suggest that the difference isn't great - I may be misinformed here) then buying the 9600K for $340 and then having to spend another >$40 for a decent cooler, and then the costs for a decent mobo for either seems to be a fair difference too.
I could be misguided and wrong with said information?

  • Not bagging the 3600X but it does seem a weird item compared to the 3600 the only difference a 200mhz boost.

    • apart from that, theres also a much better cooler on the 3600x
3600 has the stealth cooler while the 3600x has wraith.
stealth is trash so you have to buy an aftermarket cooler to ensure decent cooling.

    • Reviewers say the same.

  • Save the money and get the 3600 + Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO air cooler.
