Parking Fines in Brisbane - Did I Get Away?

Last night I was visiting my sister and my new nephew in hospital and was running a bit late. I had earlier in the day looked on streetview for on-street parking that might be available at night (rather than paying $20+ for an hour at the hospital), and saw that the zones ended at 5pm, so should be free to park in afterwards.

Arriving late at about 7:10pm and without much thought I parked in a slightly different area than I had looked at and rushed off to the hospital so we could be there as long as possible before the 8:00pm end of visiting hours. Returning to the car at around 8:30pm, I noticed that about 10 cars down from where I parked, there were some Brisbane City Council Parking Enforcement taking photos of a parked vehicle. I thought it was odd, but then went and quickly checked the parking signage and saw that I was actually within a paid 4P zone than ends at 10pm.

I quickly checked the car and didn't see any infringement notices on it, so we left quickly, and hoped for the best that I was just lucky enough to get back in time before them checking my car.

I've seen some pictures online of printed parking Infringement Notices from Brisbane City Council, but can't find anything more recent than 2017. I know that a lot of Council's are automating systems and going more paperless, so I am worried that even though I didn't get a slip under the wiper, I might get a fine in the mail in a week or two.

I have obviously done the wrong thing here and had I realised it was still within the paid parking time I would have either tried to find somewhere else or paid quickly, but I didn't.

For my piece of mind can anyone let me know if they have revived a parking fine from Brisbane City Council recently and they got a paper slip under the wiper, or if they have received a parking fine in the mail at a later date?

It was likely that they haven't gotten to your car yet

    • Crossing my fingers!

  • You could try calling 1300 012 747 to see if a fine has been issued.

    https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-and-transport/parkin…

  • If you has moved the car out of the parking bay and waited till they moved on you could have seen which way they were heading, thus if heading away from your car they had already done you if towards you you're ok

did you look in the rear view mirror as you sped away and catch which way they headed?

    • I wasn't really looking to hang around and let them check! Their BCC car was parked further down the road and the car they were writing up was between my car and their car, so I am assuming they were working their way towards my car, not away… but never know!

If you see a parking inspector close by and you're not sure if you got nabbed or not, quickly buy a ticket anyway.

You can use the excuse that while you were being fined, you were trying to find a ticket machine that worked.

Speaking as someone who received a fine last week, yes, Brisbane parking inspectors do always leave a ticket under the wiper.

    • not in the cbd for not standing and bus and taxi zone offences. I know people who have had the fines arrive in the mail

      • I was just parked in a normal space. I have seen mail fines online for parking in illegal locations, but none for exceeding your parking time, hence I hope as I didn't get a physical slip, I might have escaped.

Thanks, sorry to here you got fined, but sounds like I might have gotten lucky this time!

      • Thankfully I was able to get the fine waived, so no skin off my nose!

        • That's good to know! How did you go about getting it waived?

I've never had any luck disputing stuff (not that I have had to do it a lot…).

          • @Crosscade: It was in a bit of a grey area - I recently bought a new car and bought parking under the old licence plate instead of the new one. Ended up appealing the fine with proof of purchase, and they must have taken pity on me and waived it. I think I just got real lucky with that one…

    • So as someone who received a single fine, you're an authority on what they always do? Surely you see how ridiculous that statement is.

      • I've received a few fines over the years. Every time, without fail, they have placed a ticket under my wiper. OP was concerned that the council may have recently moved to paperless fines - receiving a paper fine the week before is decent enough evidence that they're still sticking to the physical fines. Surely you see how ridiculous replying to 3 month old threads just for an argument's sake is.

Call them up. Say you parked for an hour, didn't get a ticket, provide a picture of your car and rego. This will give you a definite answer in a few weeks.

    • Not really looking to volunteer information to them that they could use to fine me!

      • Spot on. Don't trust the government at all. I've been issued dodgy parking fines before which they conveniently said they had no evidence on as soon as I asked for it. Who knows how many incorrect fines get issues everyday yet they never issue refunds or notices, they'll just keep your money.

Don't give them any personal details. If a fine comes in the mail then tough luck, if not don't go snooping around admitting you did something wrong and wanting to know if you got away with it.

      • Woosh :) I should've put in /s
