$9 for a coffee and croissant! WTF! And Gloria Jeans as well, their stuff taste like dishwater..

    not a bargain

    • depends on the shop

      isn't a large coffee only $4~?

    • they should take the word 'only' out

  • +2

Coffee is hit and miss, and then there's the Hillsong 'Mercy Ministries' connection. Not getting my hardearned…

  • Foo, for $7.50 or $8 I can get a very nice coffee and slice of premium cake (e.g. Choc Mousse, Black Forest) at any of a number of cafes around here.

  • not really a deal IMHO

  • crapt deal….
GJ's coffee tastes like tap water

  • +5

    Why is this a deal?
    1. it's not even cheap
    2. the products aren't worth the price

  • +3

You should be careful about what kind of bargains you post here on Ozbargain, we are people looking for a GENUINE deal!

  • dude, you can get a proper lunch meal and a drink for that price and still have some spare change!

  • they're extremely overpriced generally. i think a slice of banana cake was $4, absolutely insane. i mean its not like its $1 elsewhere, but anything above $3 for a flimsy banana cake and its kind of taking the piss.

their coffee is awful as well.

as an aside, most cafes do coffee+muffin/cake for a much better price nowadays

  • their coffees are extremely expensive too! $3.50 for a small coffee? pfft

  • Neggggggggggg

Many of you have provided valid reasons why this isn’t a bargain or other reasons why the coffee isn’t so good.

So, I’d like to add a few things that people should consider before visiting Gloria Jean’s Coffees:

    • The Gloria Jean’s Coffees brand in Australia is owned by Jireh International Unit Trust. Or more specifically, according to this SMH article, http://www.smh.com.au/small-business/franchising/coffee-gian…, “Owned and run by the Hillsong Church elder Nabi Saleh and the high-profile church member Peter Irvine”. So, it’s owned by big business and a controversial one at that.

    • Mercy Ministries, linked to Hillsong, is anti-gay. According to http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/gods-cure-for-gays-lost-… “In line with the Hillsong Church’s strict doctrines teaching that homosexuality is an affliction that can be cured, Mercy Ministries is keen to ensure there is no lesbianism under its roof. It issues ‘separation contracts’ to young women who make friends with each other and prevents any form of physical contact between residents.”

    • Further Mercy Ministries recruited via Gloria Jeans outlets, “Targeting girls and women aged 16 to 28, Mercy Ministries claimed - on its website and in promotional material distributed in Gloria Jeans cafes around the country - that its programs included support from ‘psychologists, general practitioners, dietitians, social workers, [and] career counsellors’.” http://www.smh.com.au/national/mercy-ministries-home-to-clos…

    • Gloria Jean’s Coffee’s is currently running a promotion in conjunction with the Seven Network program “The Amazing Race Australia”. The competition page, http://stoptheworld.gloriajeanscoffees.com/, which asks for information including name, address, mobile, fixed line, email address, date of birth, gender and so on, is not encrypted. It would seem to me that Gloria Jeans doesn’t really care about your privacy.

My advice: support a smaller locally-owned coffee shop and you’ll likely get nice and personal service, and more of your money will go to the people who serve you, rather than to pay for glitzy advertising and sponsorship.

      Wow.

I have to admit that I I'm a WASP and therefore this rant will get a neg
As for the deal. That is another issue..

    • I wonder if in a deal on food products, a rundown of the industry's treatment of animals would be welcomed, or in a shoes/clothing deal, we'd vote up a description of the apparel industry's treatment of workers.

      Are we being consistent here?

      • If someone had such ethical info on any particular deal, then sure!

        Let's make informed decisions.

  • Hi all, I never thought placing a deal from one of the big brand coffee franchise would invoke such a debate. What we are really trying to do is offer a great discount to those that love Gloria Jean's Coffee. All prices are based on their RRP which millions of Gloria Jean's customers pay for daily. Surely you can find other coffee shops at much lower price and whether the coffee at Gloria Jean's is worth $5 to $6, that's is the eyes of the beholder. I agree with many that you can get coffees at local coffee shops for $3! However, along similar line of argument, I can get any big brand commodities like handbags, sunnies, clothes at much cheaper price at other no frill shops. So when they offer sales at 30-50% off, is that still a rip off?

I wish people would understand that we are not making up the prices, but that's Gloria Jean's Coffee's prices. And what you are getting here is something you won't get at that same price at any Gloria Jean's Coffee branches across Aust.

    • +4

a redundant comparison there. the coffee at other cafes is not "no frills". the choice of beans is just about the same sometimes better. GJ though over roast their beans and hence why the coffee tastes quite poor.

also this is only valid at one store. parramatta of all places where there are dozens of other cafes in the vicinity.

i dont blame those that have negged the deal at all.

    • starbucks is better and i would say a little cheaper too.

    • +1

It is down to personal taste, but at the same time, value for money. GJ doesn't really blow my mind when it comes to taste/quality and price, so this deal is crap imo.

I'd rather go down the road to a locally owned coffee shop, and get a coffee and sweet that was made on the site.

    • Big brands usually have better quality. Also, the fact that you're associating with the brand is worth some money in terms of how it is a luxury product and makes you feel superior(e.g. Armani suits vs. no-name suits). In this case, GJs has an inferior product and it's not a luxury brand that makes you "feel good" about the product. So, unfortunately your comparison doesn't really work here…

  • EVERYBODY, lets go to NEWTOWN <insert other little bit fancy places> to have some 'good' coffee! No thanks, I'll stick to my home stirred milo from staples.

  • +1

it says sydney in title, then says paramatta branch only. that's misleading

  • FTR I don't care about the Hillsong connection - each to their own on that front. As for the millions of customers daily? It's the same mindless wannabes you see queuing up at Boost "juice" bars. No Deal.

  • just had a look on the foodmorning websit, it says originally 20$!!!!!!!!!!!!

if the drink is 6.50 which is the max you can get according to the deal, and a free one next time is 6.50, that's $13. so a croissant/pastry is $7????

there's exaggeration, there's taking one extreme to sell a deal and then there's lying.

    • Hi redhat, please read carefully. All info is on the website and we've even listed out the value. It's all big and clear on the homepage under the "What you get" section. This is Gloria's Jean's price and you are free to check Gloria Jean's price and you would find exactly what we've listed on our website.

  • +1

I still dont see how $9 is a bargain for a coffee and pastry? Even at the expensive french patisserie near my house a large coffee is $4 and a croissant would be about $4 as well. thats normal price. Gloria jeans doesn't even cook their stuff fresh and coffee is swill. wont be surprised if they die in the next few years with the crap they produce and expensive prices.
