  • I have this modem, perfect connected to my PC but range to rest of the house is not great (luckily used solely for my PC).

I got from Officeworks so if still in stock there could get cheaper on price matching

Same price at Aust Post if anyone has trouble finding

  • I reckon this is a Cat4 device?

    • Correct, cat-4

          What ?????

          • +1

@Mercina: Data will be encrypted due to low data speed. Better to put your SIM in and old phone and Hotspot.

            • @Steptoe: That’s what i’m Trying to say

            • +2

              @Steptoe: Are you a wind talker? :)

  • +1

? Are these locked to optus.

This is the E5577, here are some specs comparison for those who need to know: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/443546

    • That’s Alcatel not Huawei

      • +1

There is a comparison at the bottom of the post description to the popular Optus Alcatel model which is also frequently on sale

  • werent these $20 at kmart a while ago or was it a different model? how much data does the sime come with?

  • What would be a good place to buy an external antenna for this that I could put outside the window?

    • +1

It doesn't have an external antenna port.

      • Okay, thank you.

  • So which is better, this or the $20 Alcatel from kmart?

From reading previous posts, it says this device is missing the Band 5 850MHz frequency for Voda/Kogan 4G, but the Vodafone website says they also use Bands 1 (2100MHz) & 3 (1800MHz) for 4G, which this device has.
Can someone explain if having bands 1 & 3 but not 5 will make much difference to the 4G reception/speeds?

I know the device is probably locked and would need to be unlocked to use Voda/Kogan. I've seen a few previous post comments and ways online to unlock and will test and comment if I buy.

Alternatively, I assume I could just use a cheap Catch Connect SIM to use the full Optus network and not have to unlock.

I bought one of the older versions from Woolworths and it was not locked to Optus. I have used Telstra, Vodafone and Optus sims in it and it worked great (had a maximum of 5 devices, this one is 16)
I have since bought a larger 4G router and only use this little one for travel. It's so much easier than hot spotting and can run 24/7

      • Thanks. I've seen some people say the newer ones are locked, so we'll see what happens. I'll be using it mostly for travel too.

        • Any updates on if the new ones are network locked? Anyone have any ideas how to unlock it?

          • +1

@orly: Definitely sim locked. Tested mine tonight with a Kogan sim which said "sim locked" on the screen but an amaysim sim (Optus network) worked perfectly.
Haven't yet properly sussed out unlocking but did submit a request for a code to Optus to try my luck. Got an error message and message that said a rep will contact me within 5 business days. Apparently some people have been lucky in the past and been given the unlock code. I'll update when I find out.

    • Most people in cities or major build up areas would be fine using B1 & B3 only, but if you live in a

deep valley or regional/rural then you could benefit/must have B5 for Vodafone reception.

      • +1

Perfect! Thanks for the info. Suits me well then.

        • In that case your part of the majority of people in Melbourne then. Years ago as a kid I used to live in Endeavor Hills where

having B5 might be handy lol. I now live in regional/semi rural Northern New South Wales where I definitely need it, even now

reception is still poor at times, including Optus and Telstra using all correct hardware without a proper large external antenna set up.

    No 5G no Deal

  • Would I be able to use a phone SIM that has data on this? E.g. the Vodafone student $45 SIM with unlimited data!

    • If unlocked, the yes shouod be fine.
