  • Does this renew every financial year? I claimed it last year

    • +1

      No.

The $50 Power Saving Bonus is limited to one payment per household.

      • Thanks for clarifying. If you moved into a new house and set up an account but the previous owner/renter already got the deal for that address, are you still eligible?

        • You should be able to since you are a genuine customer looking for deals and since the electricity account is under your name.

          • @Luke5566: I wasn't a genuine customer looking for deals and I still got the $50. I live in an apartment complex covered by an Embedded Network - so no matter what the deal I was stuck with the same plan and provider.

            https://www.aer.gov.au/consumers/information-for-electricity…

I guess a got the money because I was a genuine sucker living under an Andrews Labor Government. :-/

(edit: changed link apparently AEMC is saying we get better access after Dec 2017 - will have to investigate; edit 2: read a bit more, I'm skeptical of how flexible it really is for tenants to change providers)

            • @markathome: Last time I looked into it my provider said I can leave anytime I want but I would have to either buy the power meter off of them for $500 or organise for this one to be returned to them and pay for a new one to be fitted.

            • @markathome: I mean "genuine customer" from their POV :D

    • I only did it for the 1st time. It appears the old deal expired on 30 June 2019 so this is a new deal.

      • Not a new deal, they've extended the previous deal indefinitely.

The Power Saving Bonus Program will run from 1 July 2018.

I have just checked with Vic Energy Compare via their online chat - if you have claimed last year, you cannot claim the $50 bonus again this year, as this is a one-off per household.

  • I claimed last year as well and now I moved house so will try again with new address once I get first bill.

  • Anyone know where I find the NMI (National Meter Identifier) on a Red Energy bill?

    • Never mind. Found it.

I attempted this a few months ago, but was uncomfortable about how much information they were asking. I'm not that desperate for $50.

    • +3

      You on the wrong website.

    • +2

I actually think they ask for very simple details, which I guess they have anyway.
They need to match you somehow to their records (perhaps with these details), as they're giving you public money after all.

  • Do you have to sign up to a new energy company to get this $50?

    • No. Just visit and use the site to compare plans. Then it will provide a link for you to enter your details for the $50 cheque. That's it.

  • do you actually have to commit to changing or is just 'browsing' enough?

    • +1

      No commitment what so ever.
You fill the details they ask for & get the money sometime after (I think it took a month or so).
      Fairly easy $50.

Tried last time but never receive a cheque

    • +1

      Same, never received the cheque

In it's 2018 inquiry report the ACCC said electricity price comparison sites are scams.

They claim to be showing that they are showing a list of the cheapest providers when they are showing a list of the providers paying the highest paying commissions to the website operator.

The ACCC did not distinguish websites operating on .gov domains as being anything else.

The ACCC claims that most consumers do not understand what they are buying when buying electricity.

The Australian Energy Regulator creates the rules that allow the pricing to be so obscure that most people do not understand it. They operate one of the scam websites known as Energy Made Easy (not Orwellian at all) that is profiting from their own rules being so bad that consumers use the scam websites. And indeed The Greens claim the Government is making enormous profits from the privatised electricity industry - that would be how.

Paying for leads is something that for profit businesses do and look what the .vic.gov.au website is doing here.

    https://www.accc.gov.au/publications/retail-electricity-pric…

Naturally Australian's did not vote for The Greens that were the only party intent on dismantling this disaster that is crashing the entire economy according to the ACCC. Not even the tens or hundreds of thousand of dollars of their own money they have lost is enough for these fools.

This is the Victorian Govt site.

Wow cheques are still around these days ???

  • Having recently switched & did lots of research beforehand, the VEC is by far the best (I think all retailers must supply all deals within 2 days of any changes). I checked out iSelect, but they didn't have a couple of the cheapest retailers (for my usage).

  • Spoke to online chat. Offer has been extended to 30 June 2020

    https://budget.vic.gov.au/putting-power-back-hands-victorian…

  • Got my cheque, it's in my housemate's name. The bank won't let me deposit it, despite it clearly saying 'or bearer' on the front.

What a pain in the ass! What's the point of those words? I thought it needed to say 'to account payee only' for it to be restricted?

    Cheques are dumb.
