Agreed. I built a button box for sim racing with some Arduino gear for $11. The Elgato thing has prettier buttons, but that is about all.
I did similar by connecting to the pcb from an old game pad. Today you can buy the USB boards mainly marketed to retro arcade builders for $12 for 2 units.
I was looking at these the other day online and in my haste couldn't work out what it actually does?
Does it run macros / shortcuts for use while streaming and recording gaming/computing content?
Yeah macros and shortcuts on small little display buttons so you can have GIFs etc on them. Originally designed for streaming but good for gaming too.
In my sim setup for Star Citizen I use one that has been setup with the dozens of different controls that allows me to switch far more easily in firefights. This video shows the setup.
There has been a huge uptake of these in AV and Broadcasting using this endorsed third party software Bitfocus Companion
It has revolutionised my workflow in managing content and devices for performances. I've got two of the 15 button units - I'm really tempted to jump on this too :-)
Yes I was going to ask something similar, if these were genuinely useful for more common tasks other than gaming and streaming.
Possibly even useful for grandma to easily open ‘skype’ or’ facebook’ on the computer etc.
Same price at PLE.

Same price at Scorptec and PC Case Gear too.
It really is so pointless. Keyboard Shortcuts are built in to windows. If you want remote control of Video editing or music production, TouchDaw for $5.99 on an old Android device(or current tablet/phone) will give you the full console experience. Also, touch screen monitors are not that expensive these days.
