[SA] Free metroCARD before Fee Reintroduced on 7/7/2019 (Minimum $5 Recharge Required) @ AdelaideMetro

280

A little over a year ago, Adelaide Metrocards became free.

As part of the new government's ridiculous crackdown on long-suffering public transport users, this fee has been reintroduced from 7th July 2019.

Current prices:
New regular metroCARD • free (with a minimum recharge of $5 required).
New concession and student metroCARD • free (with a minimum recharge of $5 required).

New prices:
New regular metroCARD • $5 (with a minimum recharge of $5 required).
New concession and student metroCARD • $3.50 (with a minimum recharge of $5 required).

Fares are also up by 2% and 2-section cheap short trips have been abolished completely.

Hurray for progress.

In Melbourne, you don't need a card.

Excellent observation. An Adelaide Metro card won't be much help to you in Melbourne.

  • +1

How does one "purchase" a Metrocard? The buy card links are dead.

Edit: Not available for online purchases, so it isn't possible to order one for a future visit.

    • Have a $2 return flight from Gold Coast in August - so was wondering. Catching J1X to city.

      Seniors get free off-peak travel.
Interstate Seniors: Simply visit Adelaide Airport’s Information Booth, WHSmith Express at the ground floor arrivals area of the Adelaide Airport, the Visitor Information Centre at shop 9 James Place, Adelaide (just off Rundle Mall) or an Adelaide Metro InfoCentre, show your interstate Seniors Card and you will be issued with a temporary 14 day MetroTicket.

    • +2

I'll post you one for the cost of a stamp.

      • I think you meant to reply to Infidel and not me? I was simply providing a PSA. Infidel is the one visiting Adelaide in August.

        • The offer of a card posted (without any credit loaded - if possible) would benefit you if wanting to use later - avoiding the fee. You could register & topup online👍

I get free off-peak travel with the temporary 14 day MetroTicket on arrival (staying 14 days). Sending a card is not possible in my case (I need to produce my card).

          • @INFIDEL: You did start your comment with a crying emoji, so I thought you were looking for a way to get a free card for August.

I have heaps of stamps at home, ripped from un-postmarked envelopes. Zzymurgy's offer will help curb their numbers by 2.

            • @alvian: What - there's no crying (now!)😉

I was expecting to need the card, so also tried to buy online. Did that recently on trip to Sydney - was posted free.
But, as I researched it, I realised I probably don't need & can't use the card. So fee doesn't apply in my case🎉

Rang to confirm how interstate Seniors pay for peak fares:
Interstate Seniors don't qualify for local Seniors MetroCard. (Pity as peak fare is much cheaper - currently $1.83)
Present temporary 14 day MetroTicket, pay concession fare during peak times.
eg peak fare airport to city $2.90😱

              I'm liking Adelaide already😀

The online Metrocard management site https://mc.adelaidemetro.com.au/ has been unavailable due to an upgrade for several days now - very annoying!

  • Letting people get on the bus especially via the back doors has opened up the evading of fares, I've seen it a happen a lot more since this has been introduced

    • Just like paywave and self-service checkouts, the cost of convenience is crime. The cost of crime is increased fees for those doing the right thing.

      • It's more complex than that…
The marginal cost of a non-paying passenger on transport with spare capacity can be almost nil…

The cost of enforcing non-compliance may outweigh the revenue from fines…

Allowing easier access to transport may allow easier avoidance of payment, but increase speed of vehicle so lowering operating costs & potentially increasing patronage & income…

It's more analogous to unauthorised downloading of movies. Lots of us do it but those financially invested in & benefiting from the movies of course don't.

        • +3

It's even more complex than that.

Taxpayers heavily subsidise public transport fares. (That's how it's supposed to work.)

So the cost of maintaining and enforcing a ticketing system may actually outweigh the cost of providing the whole service free of charge.

          • @zzymurgy: It's complex!
Seniors pay no fares off-peak, subsidised by taxpayers.

In Brisbane that system is about to be introduced @ $3M+/yr. But that's less than $9/yr per senior.

          • +3

@zzymurgy: Free public transport could definitely improve patronage as it makes taking the car even more expensive. Although that could cause issues with services that are already at their limit (e.g. O-Bahn in peak hour).

The downside is that people may not put as much value on a free service.

        • So no reason fares should increase, as long as revenue from fares is not substantially affected by fare evasion.
If a large proportion of travellers don't pay, costs are about the same, but revenue falls - meaning likely fare increases, enforcement costs, etc.

Wait, they abolished 2-section fares? When did that happen?

    • In 11 days

      • It is believed people abuse the 2 section ticket by just "buying a ticket" and then staying well past the 2 stop limit it was supposed to provide for(3 km).
When you have no money though, everything becomes an issue and there may be other issues at play too.

  • I didn't realise that there was such a big savings on the 28 day pass, I'll have to change. I thought it didn't work out better if you missed one or two days, but you have to mix 6 a month for it to be worse off (based on 2 way travel 5 days a week for 4 weeks).

    $3.7725*4 = $150.8
    $150.8-$101 = $49.8
49.8/3.77 you are paying for 13.2 extra trips doing it per trip.

    • Good point, I haven't checked that before. $101 = 27 regular trips each way, so you only need to use it for 14 days per month to make it good value.

    • It used to be $125 then they dropped it to $99.

      • When I heard they reduced it down to $99, I changed over and I do that when I don't have holidays planned. So its a significant discount and definitely worth doing. (However last time I checked they don't allow auto re-charge on that feature)

  • Does the credit/card have an expiry? Thanks.
