  • The watch guru, watchnerd: I haven't seen any activity from him for ages. I hope he is healthy and happy.

Mathnerd has also been pretty quiet. Some people were quite narky with their posts. Not the sort of thing you do when someone is trying to share good information.

A whole separate topic, but they’ve both (assuming they’re separate people?) been in the penalty box for ages along with PJC and Scab.

      • That's sad. I remember pjc too. That's why we've had no watch posts then. Pity. Thanks for explaining.

Is this the style of watch you want? Generally invicta have a following. Not my style. Ideally you want some parameters. I'm no expert, but this is a starting point. You can check out watch sizes or generally even see the watch you want on a wrist online - youtube or do an image search. You'll have a favorite ballpark figure that suits you. My requirements are set out below just to give you an idea. Generally I go for style first then look at specs. Some stores

One easy recommendation that has strong following and is great bang for buck is the Casio Duro https://www.casio.com/products/watches/sports/mdv106-1a. This would be much better than your invicta. Another easy recommendation for a very well known and liked watch, is the casio DW5600. It's digital, very light, very tough, recessed glass https://www.casio.com/products/watches/g-shock/dw5600e-1v. This is the watch I generally take bush walking or on the mtb. It's also cheap (< $50).

    1. quartz
    2. size - 40 or 45mm
    3. preferably sapphire glass. Note: if the glass is recessed, it is even better and doesn't necessarily have to be sapphire.
    4. good visibility
    5. does the date have good visibility - many don't
    6. type of strap - I prefer nylon for everyday use, or rubber / silicone, nato type would be best.
    7. is the crown protected? For example, like your invicta watch, it has guards next to the crown.
    8. crown placement? It's better if the crown is in a different location to what the invicta is so that it doesn't dig into your wrist. An alternative (what I do with a watch like that) is wear the watch on right wrist so that crown is pointing away. The watch will still be oriented correctly.
    9. if it is a diving watch - does the crown screw down? Better waterproofing if it does.
    10. if it is a diving type watch with a 0-60 minute bezel, does the bezel rotate? I can't stand pseudo bezels. Even if you don't dive you might as well have the basic functionality of a timer up to 60 mins. Divers would only use this function these days as a backup against computer failure.
  • Looks okay but make sure you don't show it to any watch fanatics. Also, I wouldn't consider this a dress watch; it's more a tool watch that can be dressed up for semi - formal or business occasions.

Real watch fanatics are just happy to get more people interested in watches, regardless of if its an Invicta, a Daniel Wellington or an Omega, all should be welcomed with open arms. Watch snobs on the other hand will criticise pretty much anything that doesn't have an automatic movement or a $++ pricetag. Don't associate with these people they are neither fanatics nor good for the hobby. THAT BEING SAID, do a little bit of research into what it is you are buying. I agree with @Poohduck that the Casio Duro is a comparable watch and is highly regarded but i personally have a tough time finding a good pricing on these watches as they aren't as sought after in Aus and are therefore not regularly stocked. Been following one on ebay for some time and is currently $88. If you really want to snag a good deal keep an eye on the eBay auctions, a good watch can sometimes go unnoticed. however be wary of eBay and the Indian sellers as they generally re-purpose old/ spare parts and create what are called franken watches.

Invicta is a good starting watch. Personally I wouldn't have minded starting out with Invicta, they make both Quartz and Automatic so you have plenty to choose from there. A tool watch can be worn as a dress watch. Take for example the Seiko SKX line, loved by many and used as an everyday, tool and dress watch by various people.

I myself wear the Seiko SNA-411 Flightmaster as my everyday and snagged an orient eminence for a dress watch but would happily wear an Orient Mako out to any situation that requires a dress watch. It's all a matter of perspective I suppose.

      • I don't wear dresses, so this watch should be fine 😁

I have an Invicta, but don't use it as I kept knocking the crown and the watch stopped.

@poohduck great idea to wear it on your right wrist. I think that would stop this issue. I'll try it out.

Great looking watches for the price. And quartz are much better time keepers than traditional watches that are (bizarrely in my mind) much more expensive!
