Free OpenSolaris CD

120

The OpenSolaris 2008.05 Live CD makes it simple to boot to a fully functional desktop environment, including Firefox and Thunderbird, without the need to install onto your system. After familiarizing yourself with the OpenSolaris environment, you can then choose to install it onto your disk. Once installed, you can connect to the OpenSolaris Package Repository to install additional software at OpenOffice.org

  • Cool to see a change from linux livecds

  • Does it run Minesweeper and Freecell? :)

    • I didnt run solaris for long - but they were the one in *nix world to get lot of freebies even higher then windows during a time.

    • Not too sure on that hehe. I'd say if it had Mozilla apps integrated then I don't see why a few simple MS games wouldn't :)

P.S. It can also be downloaded directly if you do not wish to wait for it to be delivered to you.

      • Nah. I was only kidding — with a different operating system, people will usually ask "does it run my favourite Windows app?" :)

Last time I used Solaris commercially was early 2000 and it was often joked as "Slowaris" because with our apps a Linux whitebox would run rings around an UltraSparc workstation that costs 5x more. We still bought quite a few E450 though — what do you expect from the good ol' .com boom days :)

I am pretty sure OpenSolaris today is very different from back then (but so is Linux). I just haven't had a chance to give it a try…

        • No, it's still as slow as ever :)

The livecd is very slow to boot (and needed a usb keyboard for my laptop, YMMV).

A full install is quite ok though.
