Advice Needed - Faulty Watch

Hi all,

Not overly phased on this but I'm curious about your opinions on the matter.

I bought a watch from The 5th last year in April.
It was returned maybe 2 months later due to imperfections (literally metal chips missing from it).

Got a different style as a replacement.
Few months went by…it stopped keeping the time. It was very random, could fast-forward an hour a day and then the next it'd be fine.

Sent it back…got a different style as a replacement.
Same exact issue. Stopped keeping the time.

Got another replacement, same style.
The watch band was faulty. They told me to take it to a repairer as they were out of stock for new bands.
Needless to say, same issue also started happening. By the end of the day it'd be 5 minutes to 1+ hour out of sync.

Now it's a bit over a year since I got the first watch and the replacements all seem to have issues. They've refused a refund every step of the way and only offered gift cards/store credit. Do you think this is an appropriate solution or is there some customer action that could be taken?

Thanks. :)

Just out of curiosity, you don't work (or play) with anything magnetised by any chance?

      No magnets in my life.

The chances that both watches suffer the exact same time skipping issue out of sync problems is astronomical, chances are you have magnets near it and dont even know it. Unless both watches have the exact same mechanism, and there is a manufacturers fault on all of those mechanisms, which is also highly unlikely.

  • How much did you pay for it, and which retailer?

    • Retailer: The 5th
      Roughly around $200

Sorry thought it was 5th of April! (Never heard of the store)

Well, you paid 180 for their marketing and $20 for the watch which would be the same as what you'd get at Aliexpress for around $10-20 and the only difference being their "exclusive" brand logo, "genuine leather" strap, oh and the "cool" website and endorsements from celebrities and social media influencers. So when it comes to quality don't expect anything more than what you'd get in a cheap mass produced Chinese watch.

Mvmt, Daniel Wellington, The Fifth, and Larsson & Jennings and the list goes on….

  • read the ACCC page on fitness for purpose and returns. They've been given multiple opportunities to fix the problem. They now need to refund your money. So many retailers aren't aware of their warranty obligations.

Considering they aren't an Australian company, I don't think they give two craps about ACL.

      • Sorry. This fact wasn't obvious to me…

        • All good, I'd say most likely they are just a merchant in China, but possibly a drop-shipper depending how well they can get the manufacturer to make it look like an premium product with premium packaging.

I had the same issue, turned out I was taking my watch off during work hours and leaving it near my laptop - which kept messing it up. Stopped doing this now and no issues since. Its amazing.

The solution is to buy a real watch.

    Under $500 - SKX007/009
    Around $1000 - Sinn 104
Up to $5000 - Omega Speedmaster Pro
Up to $10,000 - Rolex Submariner
