Help Returning Mattress on eBay for First Time

Hi Ozbargainers.

I am in the process of returning a mattress on eBay. It was an impulse buy and I realised I don't need the item. I ordered on Friday June 14 and the estimated delivery is Wednesday June 9. Since the order may have not been dispatched at this point is it possible to simply contact the seller and cancel? Otherwise if I end up having to make a return, who would be the most economical and efficient postal carrier? Can I contact them and ask them to pick it up from my house? Below are the instructions in my eBay account:

Next steps
1. Buy a return label from your preferred postal carrier.2. Send the item, and add tracking details or mark it as sent by 24 Jun.3. You should get a refund within 3 business days of delivery.4. If you don't send the item, we might close your return and you might not receive a refund.

I also have Refunded Return Shipping Costs (8 Per Year, $45 Max Each, Activation Required) @ PayPal (Also Free Pre-Trip Cancellation Cover)

    • You first have to see if the PayPal return covers "I don't need the item anymore".

How much was the single mattress? I would just keep it. Never know when you or someone else can use it.

      • You first have to see if the PayPal return covers "I don't need the item anymore".

        Yes they do.

        • I had a quick read of the T&C and you seem to be correct. There isn't a section about the reason.

          • @GangGang: Yup, the main page even says:
Whether it’s the wrong thing, the wrong size, the wrong colour or you simply changed your mind, we can refund your return shipping costs on eligible PayPal purchases with Refunded Returns.

            • @eug: I'd be more concerned about the refund of the product, forget refund of shipping. You can't just cancel an order after committing to buy on eBay, especially a mattress.

Seller will just ignore cancellation messages & ship item out which has happened with so many posts on OZb. OP will have to wait until the item has arrived & returned in unopened packaging. Then I wonder if eBay will refund due to buyers remorse. Maybe I should read the T&C of ebays refund policy.

You can, if the seller allows returns.

If you look at any of their listings, they do have a 30-day returns policy. The buyer just has to pay for return shipping.

My concern would be the cost of mailing a mattress! The box is quite bulky and heavy. If it's over the $45 Paypal refunded return limit, OP would have to shell out the extra.

                • @eug: Has anybody made a claim through Paypal? Do I need to take photos of the item?

                  • @BluebirdV: I've used the refunded returns service several times. They don't care about the item itself - they just need a photo of the package with the recipient's address visible, and a receipt for the postage costs. There is more than one way to do it though, they'll give you the details when you start a claim.

Does the delivery driver have a time machine?

So you have asked Ozbargain a question that literally nobody can answer, but the store will easily be able to answer. Then you've concocted this logistical nightmare of a situation in your mind that isnt even close to occuring yet?

Call the store, tell them to cancel it, if they cant then ask them if they can arrange a return if you deny delivery of the item.

    • Unfortunately it was too late to cancel.

  • The seller will have already been charged sale fees of about 10% by eBay. eBay does not allow returns for "Buyer Remorse", which is your situation.

Yes they do. It is up to the seller to allow returns, and that includes remorse returns.

        Only if the seller agrees

As I mentioned above, the seller has a 30-day returns policy. Regardless, as you can see, eBay does allow "buyers remorse" returns.

..you bought a MATTRESS as an impulse buy??? what the??

Are you saying that they should have slept on it before buying?

    • +1

Yes, it is common which is why they have them hanging from the checkouts at Coles an Woolies.

  • is it possible to simply contact the seller and cancel?

If you don't contact the seller, how are they supposed to know? Who else has the authority to approve the cancellation?

    • I contacted them and they said it was too late to cancel. I have to return it.
