    "12 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slot" wtf???

whats the need for so many PCIE slots?

    • Coin mining.

    • +1

For the 12 1080Ti's some people use to mine crypto.

      • omg, u weren't joking either

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ1XEAqb_FA

        • I know of one person that has 60 GPUs across about 8 motherboards. :D

I have 5 GPUs in my mining rig.

          • @norbs: What happens if u use it for gaming?? Is it constant 160fps on Ultra 1440p?

            • +1

@Homr: I dont. it has one job. :)

The gaming PC has a 2080Ti in it, bought with crytpo currency profits.

            • @Homr: nah. most games aren't optimised for SLI (2 cards), so I'd guess barely any would work with five, or if it did it would just use two max.

              • @Zazer: Oh that's a shame

                • @Homr: the 2080Ti runs triples just fine. :D

            • +1

@Homr: You'd get full performance out of the 1 card that's plugged into the long slot.

That x16 slot allows for 16 times the bandwidth of the smaller single lane slots. Roughly speaking, a 1080Ti is going to saturate a x8 slot (look up Gamers Nexus' video on Youtube for details). The other slots would bottleneck all the cards connected to them for a task like gaming - not a concern for a simple task like mining.

          • @norbs: I have no idea about any of this mining stuff. How long does it take for you to make, say, $100 AUD in the current market?

            • +1

@BadGiraffe: Too many variables to say.

Do you have GPUs? What is the cost of your power? Do you know anything about crypto currencies?

I have solar, so run them mainly during the day. I have 7 GPus mining most days. I make roughly $300/month profit at the moment.

Because the crypto market is so volatile, I dont recommend it to people that dont have spare money to throw around. I know of a few people that spent up big at the beginning of 2018 to mine coins, then the guts fell out of crypto and they lost a load of money.

That said, I was mining and not making much profit. Now things are picking back up, those coins I did mine are worth some pretty good money.

              • @norbs: How long does it take you to mine 1 bitcoin???

                • @Homr: any profits end up getting eaten by equipment depreciation

                  • @idjces:

any profits end up getting eaten by equipment depreciation

You can get an ABN and write off the GPUs etc as a business expense in one year. If you prefer you can depreciate via your personal tax return to reduce your payable tax.

                • @Homr: Mining BTC using GPUs makes no sense, you mine profitable alt coins that are suited to the GPUs that you are using. You can convert these later to BTC.

And you don't need to mine one coin, you can mine a fraction of a coin.

                  • @Maverick-au: what alt coins that are suited to the GPUs?

                    • @Homr:

what alt coins that are suited to the GPUs?

Do some research, plenty of websites out there like what to mine will tell you.

                      Every GPU is different.

  • I thought mining was dead?

    • -3

      it will be back

    • If you have solar power, it is still worthwhile.

      • +5

or plug in to neighbors power socket.

      • Can you give an example of roughly how much juice your mining rig pulls, and what approx capacity solar feeds this?

    • It's probably why this motherboard is so cheap.

  • I'm not going to buy one but why not buy it and use it as a normal motherboard?

    • +2

There's no reason not to, you could make a decent cheap computer around it
