[Announcement] OzBargain Chrome & Firefox Extensions

OzBargain has finally caught up to 21st century by implementing our very own intraweb browser toolbar, in the form of a Chrome & Firefox extension (that can also be added to other Chromium based browsers such as Brave). Add to your browser here:

OzBargain Chrome Extension
OzBargain Firefox Add-on

What it does:

  • Click on the extension icon will show a popup showing coupons, active deals and cashbacks of the merchant on your current tab.

Yes that's all. It is a simple extension after all, utilising the data already available on OzBargain. It is only activated when you click on the icon. It does not trigger when you browse around, and it only sends us the hostname on the current tab instead of the whole URL.

Shortcut key:

  • Alt+Shift+O will also trigger the browser action to show the popup.

Hopefully it's useful for some of you out there.

Works really well. Good job team! Will save me having to go searching for coupons when buying something online.

Whoop, this looks good. Thanks Scotty and the OzB team!

  • Very well done scotty, will come in very handy I'm sure

  • Excellent, thanks a ton Scotty and the team for the hard work getting this done :)

  • Thanks Scotty.
    Cheers

    Thanks OzBargain team!
I now have an even easier way to view all the domino's voucher codes.

  • When will the cashback function be working?

    • +2

If you go to a merchant's site with cashback, for example Groupon or Amazon AU, then it should show the list of cashbacks available from all the providers (Cashrewards, Shopback, etc) we are working with. Click on the actual cashback will take you to the provider's page for that merchant.

  • +7

Will there be a Firefox version?

    • +5

Currently only 3.3% of all OzBargain users use Firefox… However the aim is moving to the standard WebExtension format so it would work with both Chromium and Firefox based browsers.

      So "coming soon".

      • +10

Good to know I'm in the top 5% for something!

      • What is the % for chrome? Are you able to share the entire distribution, just curious.

        • +10

From the last 7 days according to Analytics:

          1. Chrome (55.60%)
          2. Safari (32.23%)
          3. Samsung Internet (3.38%)
          4. Firefox (3.32%)
          5. Internet Explorer (1.55%)

However if only looking at desktop users (which is only ~34% of all OzBargain traffic)

          1. Chrome (74.34%)
          2. Firefox (8.74%)
          3. Safari (7.48%)
          4. Edge (4.17%)
          5. Internet Explorer (4.14%)
          • @scotty: Thanks Scotty, I regularly use Chrome, Safari and Firefox — from what I hear about developing extensions for Safari, is it fair to say it's not even on the radar?

          • @scotty: Re #5 probably explains why the RSS feed in IE no longer works

    • +3

Here we go. Note that this is for Desktop version only. Haven't made available for Firefox on Android yet — need to actually test it out.

      • Thanks Scotty!!

      • Is it available on Firefox Android now? This is one reason to switch to Firefox Android from Chrome mobile if so.

  • +1

    Very nice!!

  • +1

    That's awesome.

Now I need to actually use my desktop :S

  • +2

    Tested on Dominos. Amazing.

  • Awesome. Can’t wait to post a link to this in the comments for all the FB sponsored posts I get for the Honey browser extension.

  • +6

And all the Firefox users shed a little tear today :(

    • +1

      and Edge…..
      .

      • +2

        and the IE user.

      • +1

Edge will switch over to Chromium based render soon, which you can download the dev or canary channels here — these will allow you to install Chrome extensions.

      • +2

Yes, literally all dozens of them.

    • +2

Scotty to create a Firefox/Edge/etc extension just use browser.tabs.query instead of chrome.tabs.query

      Or if(!chrome) chrome = browser;

I'm sure someone has made a shim/polyfill for this.

Thank you for using the activeTab permission instead of <all_urls>

  • +1

awesome. that is some great work.

  • +1

    Installed. Thanks Scotty and co!

  • +1

Amazing add-in Thanks Scotty, Already saved $700 on flights

  • Installed and using it, I'd like for the 'Go to deal' button on the 'Coupons' tab to redirect to the actual deal submitted on OzBargain rather then the site that the coupon is for.

    • Those coupons aren't necessarily come from OzBargain.

      • I see, that makes sense then.

  • Seems a lot better than Honey…

  • Firefox doesn't seem to be working properly :(
    Great stuff tho.

    • Sorry but which part is not working properly?

      • The part between the screen and the keyboard haha
It is working amazingly. Thank you for the awesome work :)

  • Double checked it wasn't April 1st, look forward to future development.

  • Wow, well done, team

Updated to a new version this morning (1.1.0) to let you quick search stores or products from inside the Chrome extension / Firefox add-on. Click on the "magnifying glass" at the top right corner of the extension popup to start the search.

  • Can the extension be updated so you can access the OZB website instead of/as well as just seeing the 'Invalid website' message? Alternatively, would be good if there was option in the drop-down to access the OZB website directly.

    • just seeing the 'Invalid website' message?

I guess you clicked on the extension icon while not on a website. We'll catch those cases and provide a link to OzBargain instead.

  • I get the error "ebay.com.au is not supported by this browser extension." when looking at eBay.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    • eBay does not want us to show the code & current deals while the someone is already on their website.

      • +1

I am assuming it's not activated to avoid legal action by eBay - but surely they have no leg to stand on?

    • +1

That's caused by Cashrewards' data which link cashbacks to Cashrewards' own website, as those stores probably don't have a website. We'll remove those when we import the links from Cashrewards.

  • any idea on when a Safari version will come out?

    • I'll need to buy a Mac, sign up to Apple Developer Program, actually develop the extension, distribute it via the Mac App Store… It might take a while.

      • Don't do it, it will ruin your life.

  • How to report bug?

    • Chrome extension links to here as bug reporitng site. So explain here.

  • When I go on ebay it says 'ebay.com.au is not supported by this browser extension'

    • Answered last September. Unfortunately due to some "commercial agreement", they do not want to visitors who are already on eBay to see the available coupon codes.

  • would this work on the brave browser?

    • +1

Yes the Chrome extension should work on Brave.

  • It looks like rss feeds have been restored for IE

  • Just noticed deals doesn't seem to pick up long running deals.

e.g. Huxtaburger not picking up this long running deal

EDIT: Hmm, now showing up after I posted an active deal.

    • That deal should be listed under "Deals" on the extension popup.

  • No love for Safari Browser?

    • +1 - Would indeed like to see this added for Safari 👍🏻

  • +1

Update 1.2.0 — add '+' button (next to search button) to post the current page as a deal onto OzBargain. It basically prefills the title & URL of the deal submission form.

  • Still desperately need an app please!

    • +1
    • Why do people prefer an app over a website that does not need to be installed on your phone?

      • I don’t like having too many windows open in my web browser. Just a personal preference :)

        • Isn't it possible to have progressive apps with separate window for specific sites? Then your objection is null and void?

  • +1

Would love to see a small counter to tell me there are coupons or deals on the site I'm visiting.

  • Cheddar available on mobile site, but not extension

Cheddar the new CBA back cashback app has been integrated into only the mobile version of OzBargain - see [Announcement] Cheddar Now Available on Cashback Button on Mobile - OzBargain Forums.

However as far as I know both OzBargan browser extensions are desktop only so extension user's won't be able to access this information.

I've commented on the announcement asking why this limitation:

Thanks for the integration of Cheddar into the store cashback comparison section.

Note that Cheddar cashback will only be shown on OzBargain mobile site. Clicking on the Cheddar cashback entry will open the page inside the Cheddar app (if installed).

    Why is that?

Today's shopper's are multi-device users and browse on desktop and switch to mobile if necessary for better discounts. Desktop allow's shopper's to see more information at once and browse faster. It would seem to be harder to discriminate against desktop users then it would be to provide information to all users (desktop and mobile)?

  • Add forums & Deal dates

Currently Coupons, Deals and Cashback are listed. There's plenty of space to add in a forums tab related to that store. Please add it.

Please also add in deal dates as some deals can be quite old.

  • i didnt know we had this. this is awesome
