A tablet for the TV, not even android TV

    • What?

    • yeah, I don't your comment. Can't neg yet :(

    • +4

you mean it's not Android TV, it's android proper? That's actually a good thing.

      • -2

No its a bad thing, as if you want a tablet, buy a tablet, if you want a smart tv get a proper android tv box

        • +2

Eh? Why are you going on about a tablet?
The android tv OS is crappy. I've got it in my tv. Its slow, buggy and most apps aren't available for it.

          • -3

@[Deactivated]: Not sure what your on about.

I have 3 different types of android TVs, Sony TV, Mi Box and Vodafone TV, and not found an App that doesnt work with them.

Tho saying that most apps not available for it, show your lack of knowledge in the area to really judge it

            • @asa79: My Sony TV doesn't have the Foxtel Now app. I had to get the .apk from an unofficial source and then sideload it. Not really something non-technical people like my co-workers or siblings could do.

That's probably the biggest missing app I can think of that someone would want on their Android TV.

And then don't get me started on the lack of app updates for the apps that do exist on Android TV.

              • -1

@karnage1020: Sorry but who wants the foxtel app, when there is plex, kodi, netflix, prime, stan

              • @karnage1020: On your Sony TV what services have you lost because an app was not updated?

                • @Major Mess: ABC iView stopped working for about 3 weeks. Would just sit with a spinning circle whenever we tried to stream any shows. All works now and has a nice, shiny new interface, but again, it was a matter of waiting until the app was updated.

      • It is not good if you want apps such as Netflix to work with a remote and not need a mouse(or emulation).

    • +6

      Dunno why you're getting negged.
      Couldn't agree more.

Any of the cheap Android boxes are cheap because they're not paying for the AndroidTV licensing and are basically just tablets without a screen.

With that, you are running an Android UI never designed for a TV and you'll be running all of the tablet versions of apps that were never designed for TV's.

But for $40 it's not too bad if you don't mind all of that.

People cant handle the truth ;)

      A tablet for the TV

There's a tablet for everything these days

  • only $us6 extra for the 64gb model.

    hardware h.265 decode is nice.

    • Never had a TV box before. Does the extra 32GB make a huge difference?

      • +2

Its just local storage, like a phone/tablet.

You can just use usb/network for video storage.
I just find local storage handy for when I travel.

      • no, not for a TV box, unless you want to copy things locally before streaming them… which i dont know why you would, you may also want to download an application that downloads from the internet and save locally, but i find, 2-4GB would be ample for me, plex, netflix, network explorer, MX player, and thats pretty much it.

if im travelling im usually taking my tablet, rather than a TV box.

Rather pay $10 extra to buy one with AMLOGIC cpu. Better compatibility with Kodi and other operating systems.
Rockchip has always been pretty uncooperative in terms of 3rd party development, so nobody makes anything for them.

Tanix TX92 is a good one with an Amlogic CPU, might need to mod it alittle to avoid overheating which is common with these chinese boxes.

    • Looks like Armbian is supported for RK3328. TX92 has a octa core S912 CPU which is more powerful, but more expensive too

  • +3

Do we use USD in Australia?

Post the price in AUD as well, at a minimum.

  • +1

Its not an android TV box

    • +2

And it's not being advertised as an Android TV OS device by GeekBuying either. These do infact fill other niche markets that Android TV does not 😉

  • +11

is it still point buying these boxes. Vodafone tv is superb with few extra $$$

    • +8

And the Vodafone TV has an Amlogic chipset as well as Android TV 7 so it works very well with Kodi. That for $72 delivered in my opinion is well worth the extra $14 over this one.

      • +2

I would get a proper (Vodafone) android TV Box rather than this.

      • +1

Will Vodafone box upgrade to latest Android, or it's not needed?

        • No confirmation as yet. That said it runs fine as is and more and more functionality updates are coming through the app store these days.

      • +1

Does the Vodafone TV box play back movies from HDD and support current formats and codecs?

        • +1

yes, i use vic, plays anything you want, plug drive into usb port.

i have normal android and android tv boxes, nice thing about normal android is more apps straight from the playstore, just like using your phone.

upside of voda box is you can buy it locally, warranty, au power pack.

        • +2

Sure does, even hardware 4k x265.

  • +2

    No Netflix 4k support

    • no gigabit lan either or 5G wifi

      • Oh wireless N only that will be slow

Both Vodafone TV and Mi box are wireless ac

      • Gigabit is not required for streaming. What advantage would gigabit have for a box like this?

        • if u rip your own 4k blurays for easy access, then the burst rates during certain scenarios (explosion or rainfall, lotsa small movements) require more than 100mbps

          • @F1Maniac: Everything I have read states 4k is around 80mbs, so I suppose with overhead it is getting close.

Looks like the standard has been updated. According to Wikipedia
            50 GB (dual-layer,[1] 82 Mbit/s)
            66 GB (dual-layer,[1] 108 Mbit/s)
            100 GB (triple-layer,[1] 128 Mbit/s)

Probably not a concern for a few years until we have 100TB Storage.

  • Question from a complete newbie to Vodafone TV:

So it will play back movies from a HDD (via USB)?

How do you install VLC mediaplayer on the VodafoneTV box?

    Thank you.

    • Yes it will. and from the Google Play Store.

    • +1

VLC is good, MX Player is better. Worth the purchase.

    • use kodi

  • Thank you!

  • 4k support for Netflix, Stan? That's a shame! Maybe they'll update soon.

    • +1

Not much 4k content on Netflix, most is just upscaled, and then it's also the NBN connection lottery … I'd be happy with more 1080p native content rather than upscaled.

      • There is heaps of 4k Netflix shows and movies

    • Nope as not certified for Netflix 4k.you get 480p Netflix i think it is from memory

      • My non certified android box gets 1080p.

Personality I not sure, I only have netflix certificated devices, vodafone tv, mi box, and sony tv etc

          • @asa79: That thread says it is all over the place, which it appears to be and qwas my point. That is that not all devices are stuck on 480p. Have a look at the Widevine DRM link in that thread.
My device (older M8sPro) will drop resolution if on wifi but does have L1. When I got it, even tho it reported L1 it only gave me SD. I tried older Netflix apps and that didn't help. I had to do some gymnastics I can't recall, and then I could update Google's DRM and then all was good.

  • Another Vodafone TV question sorry - can a VPN be used with it to stream us Netflix? Which vpns currently work?

    • +1

VPN works via side-loading. I use Private Internet Access VPN and doesn't work all the time.

      • Thanks, is there a guide of some sort which explains any of this? I'm not sure what side loading is :)

        • +1

I google PIA android box and reddit posts/websites popped up. Just followed instructions and worked like a charm.

Good thing with PIA, it's supported by plenty of 3rd party proxy apps in Android.

    • VPN works, most of apps are available on play store. I use pureVPN to watch my Indian content. never had any issues

    • You woukd be better to set Vpn on your router. If you have a USG you can set up a Vpn vlan and assign to a particular wireless ssid or network port (if you have unifi switch)

  • Can't you get this from AliExpress for $20-$30 USD?
