Charging Notebook with USB Phone Charger

Hi, I have a toshiba x20w-e notebook.

I note the laptop uses USB C to charge, min is 5V 3amp.

I tried charging it with my 2.4amp USB charger and it doesn't work.

Just wondering would any powerbank be capable to charge the laptop?

Also, would a 3 amp USB car charger be able to charge it?

This is my first notebook with USB charging so I no idea what works in the real world.

It would be good to be able to charge power the notebook from a powerbank/car for long journeys.

Cheers

  • You likely need a charger with USB PD specification. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/usb%20pd A search for this on ozbargain lists a few poducts posted with this feature, if you also post your model of laptop we may be able to help you further.

example: Romoss SW20 Pro provides 18w usb PD

    • Thank you so much.

My laptop was mentioned in the first sentence :) toshiba x20w-e notebook.

Manual mentions the chrager is it-
      45W 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V USB 3.1 Type C Adaptor PD (Power Down).

However does not mention lowest power to charge it.

I don't mind if it charges sloooowly as long as the USB charger or powerbank can power the notebook so I can at least use it.

For my device, what is the Min spec I should consider?

      • Well the Romoss SW20 Powerbank https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/457951 for example would be one of the minimum spec, if you want to charge the device while its off.

However, If you want to use the laptop and charge it at the same time (via a powerbank) you may need a higher charge device (say the Romoss is 18w while the kogan is 60W PD https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/458640) your laptop specs say 45W PD so I'd say match or exceed the numbers will help with how well it charges.

The type of usb c cable may also be a factor(cheap nasty ones apparently dont pass the high current properly? or some other mumbo jumbo) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/459344 This link shows a xiaomi cable with upto 100W spec compatibility.

If you need further help, hopefully someone will chip in that actually owns a USB PD device(including nintento switch users) because I don't :P to comment. I do however own the Romoss SW20 Pro and the kogan Powerbank if you have any queries.

        • Thanks very much.

I'm not so sure that a 18W powerbank/charger will power up the notebook.

I think I better find one that is at least 45W.

I'll start asking family and friends to see if they have a PD powerbank/charger that I could use to test.

Cheers, thank you for all your help.

          • @JimB: No Probs :) Just incase you change your mind or are comfortable charging the laptop while off(say in a travel bag while you are on the go) Ozbargainer clear has posted a current deal for a Romoss Sense 8+ https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/462730 with 18W PD….

You can also ask clear and the others about your Situation in there(maybe some better answers and solutions may appear)
