I prefer them depressed, like me every time I see a comment from jv

The term is sampled, not compressed. 44 kHz is a sampling rate, so is 192 kHz.

The next step is quantisation. 8 bits is quantised, so is 12 bits.

Whether the sampling rate and quantisation is alright by your exacting requirements is up to you. But it isn’t compressed.

There is dynamic range compression, but that’s just as much a thing on tapes and LPs too.

Brand new accounts or never has Plex Pass accounts?

    • I have an existing account, and I’ve had plex pass trials previously and it allowed me to proceed all the way to payment info - says my free trial will expire on the 6th of September, so looks like it’ll work for existing users.

    • just learnt the hard way, do not cancel your tidal subscription as that will kill your free plex pass trial..

signed up, got it, then closed the subscription so i wouldnt be charged and my plex pass was revoked.

    Plex is great. Tidal sux.

    • It's certainly expensive, but I'm surprised that in moving over approx 100 songs from Spotify, tidal had the vast majority, say 95%.

But yeah, lossless vs 320 vorbis, I'm not convinced I'll be able to hear the difference.

90 day trial for hifi tier isn't bad though. And you can always use a new email and get a new trial.

      • I find that app SongShift? Pretty accurate but my playlists are fairly big and I notice a few incorrect matches and find the process fairly annoying because of it.

        • Soundiiz web app is free but you have to do each playlist individually.

4.50usd for one month premium to do all playlists at once.

BE CAREFUL as they try to charge you 3usd per month billed annually. Cheeky bastards.

Stamp is an android app that tried to charge me 13aud, no thanks…

          • @ozbjunkie: ozbjunkie- Check out the RFD group buys forum as you can get a Tidal HiFi yearly plan for about $50 Canadian as part of someones family subscription.

            • @Spizz: Yep thanks for the advice. I was noticing a family plan for 36aud 5 users per month, but that's still double what I paid for Spotify family for one year approx.

I'll check it out, cheers for advice.

Yeah I was invested in lossless audio until I actually blind ABX tested myself. I could identify 128 kbps mp3s from 24 bit losssless 100% of the time, but the difference was really small. Above that was more or less transparent to me. After that I decided 320 kbps mp3s were more than good enough.

        • Yep, I can't tell the diff between 192 and 320… Might not be able to tell the diff between 128 either. I have fool's gold ears.

Of all the things I have bought a subscription to, Plex is the most utilised and best value for money. I only purchased the lifetime this year when I got "The email", but I have been using it for years. By far, a worthy $100 spent. That said, I'd never sign up for Tidal at $23.99pm.

The best and most used features of Plex pass, for us, are: sync and subtitles (I prefer watching with subs, even English content).

    • You don't need plex pass for subtitles.

    • What is "the email" ?

      • "Get Plex Pass Lifetime for $74.99USD".

It's sent at random and for a limited time. It is linked to the receivers email address/account.

Oh nice. I only been using plex for a couple months so will have to keep an eye out for that email

Can I cancel my subscription now and have the trial until it ends?

    • Below comments say yes you can cancel and keep :)

Using Plex constantly, but still cannot understand the need to use Plex Pass.

    • Ditto

Sync to tablets/phones is a game-changer. We use it in the car on long journeys for our child.

Otherwise, my subscription was largely prompted by the fact that I want to support the devs, whose software I had been using for years for free. I suspect, in coming years free plex will become more limited as they try to raise revenue and investors seek to profit. That, or Plex will simply disappear.

      • +3

There are so many big data plans these days I don't see the need for sync myself.

If I was going for a long period without internet I would copy the files manually.

        • +3

Yeah, we spent a long time copy data manually to the tablets SD card. After a while, that becomes annoying though. Also, Plex can transcode before syncing thus reducing space taken up. Something you could also do with handbrake yourself.

Relying on an internet connection is frustrating, especially with kids. It is much easier to just have everything they watch synced on an SD card and not deal with dropouts, data limits etc.

      • You can achieve this by purchasing the app with a one off $7 payment in the play store.

Sync isnt available', but you can stream your own media at whatever quality you choose.

We stream all our media while travelling using this method and no need to pay for the 'lifetime'sub.

        • That would mean your other devices need mobile access right? Do you just use hotspot?

        • That's the opposite of sync. That's literally just using Plex as it is.

    • I use it for the DVR feature in conjunction with a HD Homerun on my network. It means I can do everything on the NVIDIA Shield TV interface, no need to exit out of it to use FTA TV etc. TV and recordings (with ads auto removed) can be watched on any device on the network.

    • I bought the Pass years after I started using Plex mainly to support the developers of such an awesome product we use so often.

  • Is this one of those subscriptions where you can cancel on day one, and it will still run through to the end of the 3 month trial?

    • +2

Who's gonna risk it for the rest of us lol

      • Ha, yes. It wasn't going to be me.

    • It's in the terms and conditions:

"Cancellation. You are responsible for cancellation of any Subscription(s). But, you can cancel at any time with such cancellation effective upon expiration of the then current Subscription(s) period. To cancel, please visit this page and make a cancellation request at least one (1) day prior to the end of your then-current Subscription term."

      • +3

Have signed up and cancelled. All good.

        • +1

Perfect. Thank you. I'd rather cancel now than forget later!

  • Does Plex Pass actually offer any content? Or is it all reliant on a TV tuner and the stuff you have probably illegally downloaded?

  • Doubt Tidal will have a lasting presence. Currently they are outside the top 1000 app chart on both Appstore and Google Play.

    • They’ve been saying that since 2015 and they are still around.

    • bit like spotify, doesn't have the top 20 billboard songs the past 20 years :P

  • When does this offer expire?
