Opinions Please: Should I Have to Pay Freight

Hello All,

Just seeking an opinion….

So I am doing a house renovation and we have gone to look at some tiles.

I walked into a store in Melbourne and they gave me some options. I made a selection that I like. I get the quote…and apparently the tiles are at their supplier in Sydney and so they are charging me to freight them down.

I'm questioning if this is a fair ploy on their part given that I didn't "walk" into a Sydney shop…but rather a shop in Melbourne.

No, they can charge you delivery from their place of business to you but not from their supplier to them. Did you ask them why they have quoted like this?

    • I didn't ask…but because they are the only ones that stock those tiles I sort of dont have an option.

I can go directly to the supplier…but then I would be charged a freight charge for sure….and that I would think is reasonable since the supplier is in Sydney.

What a strange thing to say. A seller can charge anyone whatever they like. It's up to the buyer to decide whether they agree to it.

      That's complete fiction.

If you don't like the price, simple: don't buy them.

      Yeah…thanks for that!

Not really an option since they are the only ones that stock the tiles I want…and it wasn't really the point of the question.

        Not really an option

You have a rather weak bargaining position then ;)

You can ask the shop to reduce their price, they can choose to do so or not. If you'd prefer, you could pretend the price per tile was higher and there was no freight component.

Scam alert. Stop dealing with them and go to another store.

    here's your choice-

    (a) $500 + $50 freight

    or

    (b) $550

They could've just wrapped up the freight charge like your option b and OP would be none the wiser.

  • Go elsewhere, its the shops responsibility to pay for delivery to their own store.

They can charge whatever they like, you don't have to buy from them.
Ask them to remove the shipping cost and increase the price of the tiles if that feels better

Call the supplier and ask if they have any other retailer close to where you are.

  • Something you didnt mention was how quickly you wanted the product. You may find that they get regular deliveries from a supplier and based on your timelines it may need to be send separately. In that case absolutely no issue with you paying freight.

  • Yeah, like the others have said, plug the product name or number into Google and you might get lucky.

  • They are probably quoting you this way in good faith, to show that they are passing charges straight through and putting margin only on product/service. It is more common in B2B, but definitely not unheard of.

The alternative is that they just add it to the cost of the product, without it being a separate line item, and there is no Ozbargain thread.

  • Drive to Sydney and pick them up
