NBN Was Recently Installed, Changing The DNS Servers Still Won't Let Me Access Blocked Sites

I recently had to switch over to NBN (with telstra). After doing so I realised i couldn't access blocked sites even after using the methods explained here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/426804. Is there any way i can get this to work again?

  • Are you changing both DNS servers from your router?

    • nah from the computer. Cant change it from the router, telstra isnt letting me

      • If you can't change DNS from the router itself, you'll have to manually change the DNS settings on each client/machine.

Once you change DNS on the pc, go into command prompt and type in

        ipconfig /flushdns

        • Did that but no dice

EDit: Somehow i worked after the 5th try

          • @Krad3r: Awesome!

            • @Sergeant Salami: Telstra lock the modem with their own DNS. To get around it you can select no DNS and then when you assign them on the device it'll work.

              • @o53djz7qTPY4der: Any idea how to do that? tried to search in the Gateway(?) outer settings, but can't seem to find it.

                • @Krad3r: I can't remember, I'll fire up my Gateway tonight to look. I am with iinet now but have kept the telstra router. It's in a box somewhere. It is definitely possible though because I remember it causing problems with my VPN and DNS leaks and that was my work-around.

                @o53djz7qTPY4der:

Telstra lock the modem with their own DNS.

If it's a Telstra device it's a probably half decent device that Telstra has made into a shit potatoe with their own firmware.

  • If on desktop Windows, try use DNS Jumper app.

    https://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v2-1/

    PC restart may be required.

    1. Change both DNS in router
    2. Reboot router
    3. Flush DNS cache on your device
      That should do it.
    • Dont think i can change the dns from the router, and changing it from the pc isnt working.

Telstra lock down DNS changes? I wonder how long it will be before Telstra start trapping and redirecting all traffic on port 53 (DNS) to their own DNS IP?

  • Your can try an alternative router interface after you hack the firmware, if it is one of the hacked models.
