Looks Like TPG Has Gone and Blocked a Shite Load of Sites

Just recently realised that TPG has blocked a sh*t load of sites deemed to infringe copyrights.

e.g Subtitle page, check this: http://www.yifysubtitles.com/subtitles/johnny-english-englis…

Simple site to download bloody subtitles is now deemed copyright, what's going on?

Looks like VPN prices are gonna jump soon, get it folks

Seems to be an extension to the federal court mandated blocks. Oddly Aussie Broadband don't have any blocked websites included those listed on Wikipedia.

    • +7

Of course, the australia firewall started over child porn but Labor introduced it? I'm confused

    • Aussie Broadband has been blocking things on and off for me. Rargb/Pirate bay sometimes pops up with the federal notice. Other times no

      • +2

"federal notice" … copyright…Piratebay etc. Hacking main pipes?

Is this gov doing this?, cause I seem to get this on several ISP's, Kogan, TLS, Voda…

On the bright side from this, I decided I could live life without movies, hollywood, media and TV. So bring it on creeps.

        • Yep, there was a ruling from the government which said that ISP's are responsible for what their users view. The main target being websites that could potentially violate copy right. This was probably a year ago? It just seems it has not been implemented properly

    • +3

Here is the full list of websites that have been blocked.

  • +10

    The link works for us.

Perhaps it's time to change ISP.

    • +2

yea some ISP dont care about court orders. No bans with them.

      • +12

And many thanks to them for resisting.

    • Yes it's blocked for me. I am with TPG.

Alternatively, just change your DNS to a different DNS server.
Open DNS is free and excellent, not to mention safe as it's owned by Cisco.

      Or Google's 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4
      CloudFlare's 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1 (fastest)

      • +5

Yes, site blocking in Australia is via DNS poisoning. All you have to do to circumvent it is not use your ISP's DNS servers. You can change the DNS for just your Operating System or set them into your router. Here's a nice frontend for Windows users: https://www.sordum.org/7952/dns-jumper-v2-1/
Unfortunately DNS Jumper hasn't been updated for a while and so doesn't have Cloudflare as a preset. I changed to Cloudflare last week and they are just as quick as TPG's DNS servers, and completely unblocked.

        • Thanks, this is a saver, I don't need to keep right clicking the network property.

It does have a cloudfare preset, if this is what you meant?

          AU - Cloudflare=1.1.1.1,1.0.0.1,True

Btw, FF blocks me but with IE I'm able to access those anime sites.

Edit: Scratch that, FF is now working. I've to turned off the adblock.

      • Wasn't there a 4.4.4.4 one at one point?

        • There still is. It belongs to Verizon I believe, but it offers no benefits. You're not thinking of 4.2.2.2 are you?

          • @Daabido: Unless memory has failed me, I thought that was Google's….?

      • Just remember this.
The more people you tell how to do this (even if it's stupidly obvious to you), the faster the time will come when the ISPs will be forced to implement far harsher internet blocking methods.
And believe me, this time will come, the reason why the don't act on it now is that most people just aren't that technical.

The people who REALLY want it will find out, without your/anyone's help.

In other words your just making it life harder for everyone who needs it future wise.

    • I cant edit the DNS…im using their shitty Huawei Gateway ADSL

Just change the DNS settings on your desktop/laptop/phones will work

        • +11
          1. Open your list of network connections in the control panel.
          2. Right click on your network adapter.
          3. Properties.
          4. Internet Protocol Version 4.
          5. Properties.
          6. Use the following DNS server address.
          7. Enter IP addresses of DNS servers.
          8. OK.
        • tried it, still doesn't work.

          https://imgur.com/HBOcdME

          • @frostman: Give it some time. Your computer still remembers the location of the sites from last time it did a DNS request (which TPG hijacked). When it refreshes, it will get the real location from the new DNS servers you typed in.

            • +11

@NotSureAboutThatMate: Alternatively, open up your command prompt and use:

              ipconfig /flushdns

              to manually reset your DNS

              • @Tyble: Didn't work for me :(

                • @CarbonMini: I think it needs to be administrator command prompt (right-click instead of opening command prompt)

        • Yep this.

I'm with TPG and had no issues opening that website but i previously edited my DNS.

          • @ribze1: did you edit the dns on the pc or on the router?

I think the pc dns does not work since it still get the dns from the router

            • @pinkybrain: I did it all on the PC.

Still have the link i used bookmarked - http://startupfix.blogspot.com/2016/12/how-to-unblock-pirate…

              • @ribze1: so editing it on PC, can still bypass a router DNS hard setting?

Last time I tried doing the pc dns,
it still showed the site blocked

So I don't know why it didn't worked
I flushed the pc dns cache and also disabled and re enabled the ethernet connection

I did what was in that linked you posted..
how come I still got blocked?
                did you do anything else?

                • @pinkybrain: Sorry man not sure, i just followed the instructions in the link above.

      • I would drop TPG's Huawei routers. I had one for HFC NBN. It was annoying.

        • @lostn what do you recommend when replacing TPG Huawei modem?

    • -1

      didn't work, tried them all

      https://imgur.com/HBOcdME

      • +1

Did you clear your dns cache? Google how to clear on your specific device of a reboot usually does the trick as well.

I have been using a VPN for well over 2 years now so I never face any issues with TPG accessing anything and speed doesn't decrease much 5% tops.

      • Not sure why you are getting Negs. I am also in the same boat. Got Huawei and can't change the DNS on the router. Tried changing on windows settings, flushed DNS, even restarted PC few times, still doesn't let me access the sites from any browsers. Did you get it to work? What am I missing people?.. or is it time to ditch TPG?

      • +3

OK I was able to change the DNS.

Go to https://dnsleaktest.com/ and do a standard test. It should show TPG as your ISP.

        In your huawei settings:

        1. Go to HOME NETWORK > LAN INTERFACE > DHCP SERVER > Manually configure the DNS server for LAN devices. There you can change the DNS Setting. Save the settings.
        2. On the same page, under IPv6 DHCP server, untick the box. Save the settings.
        3. Same page > RA Setting > Untick the box and save.

Go to https://dnsleaktest.com/ and do standard test again. It should now show google (or whichever dns you are using).

But in saying that, I still can't access the blocked websites!! I think it's time to ditch TPG.

EDIT: YES I GOT IT TO WORK. F@#! YOU TPG! I've added step 3 above for it to work. Just refresh the page/restart pc if it doesn't work.
EDIT 2: Credit goes to this thread https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2589355

Probably blocked based on the theory that if you purchased a legal copy of a movie / TV show it would already come with subtitles.

    • +7

The dvd comes with english only subs - too bad if you have guests/relatives from overseas that dont speak English that well no subs for them

      • +3

I'm not saying that it's fair, I'm just saying that it's probably part of the logic behind it.

On a related note I find it incredible that these days some DVD's would only come with English subtitles.

Even 20 years ago I remember buying DVD's and there would usually be at least a handful of different languages available to choose from for the subtitles.

Out of curiosity, which DVD is it?

        • +2

part of the logic behind it.

There's logic behind it? I think you're giving too much credit here.

          • +2

@Domingo: realistically the true logic behind it is Yify is a major content torrent creator. I know because at one point "720p Yify" was my goto search. so they probably blocked all Yify sites.

This week the Federal Court has issued the largest pirate site blocking injunction thus far in Australia, judging by the number of targeted sites. The case in question was filed by Village Roadshow, Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount, Columbia, Universal, Warner, and others, targeting 78 pirate "locations." The list of targets includes IPTorrents, BT-Scene, Fmovies, Putlocker, RuTracker, KissAnime, NYAA, Torrentday, YIFY-movies and various others. In total, the injunction lists 181 domain names. Interestingly, the court order also targets several subtitle sites. The injunction lists OpenSubtitles, YifySubtitles, and SubScene, for example. While these sites don't host or link to infringing videos, the movie companies argued that the sites are "communicating to the public a literary work," referencing the screenplay.

ISPs don't want to restrict your internet access.

The Government (Lib and Lab) does because Hollywood pays them to run Australia as they see fit.

Yes I remember reading an article linked on Whirlpool, a Greens politician was voicing against a law requiring ISP to store a user's internet usage.
The article showed how to avoid government surveillance, even linking tutorials going into deep stuff like a Linux distro loaded from a USB key or DVD then running only from the RAM, and the methods used by Snowden and Greenwald to communicate.

      • Anyone got a link to this article? Looks like interesting reading.

    • -3

The Greens do not support the internet filter.

If you care about civil liberties you should vote for a civil libertarian party like the Liberal Democratic Party (David Leyonhjelm) [they share the term 'Liberal' in their names but they have nothing to do with the Liberal Party of Australia]. The Greens are opposed to most other civil libertarian issues such as fishing, using national parks, farmers' issues, etc.

      • +16

I think any party starring David Leyonhjelm is self-evidently a party to avoid voting for…

        • -6

I'm always open to alternatives, or do you only offer unconstructive criticism?

          • +18

@Scrooge McDuck: He's a hypocrite. For example, advocates for small government but forced this government to create a completely unnecessary Wind Farm Commissioner. And despite being a staunch advocate for free speech, he doesn't like free speech if it affects him. And, despite Sarah Hanson-Young not being everyone's cup of tea, he totally slut-shamed her on Sky News which was disgusting.

            • +4

@dazweeja: If I write my +1 for you like this no one can cancel it out

            • @dazweeja:

              1. Who am i to judge if she should stop shagging men, but with men like that id say its fairly good advice 😂

              2. Id rather shag her than him 😂

            • -2

@dazweeja: That's unfortunate! I vote based on ideology, not personality. Historically I've always voted below the line usually starting with the Secular Party, many other libertarian minor parties, sealing it with Lib/Lab and dumping socialist and religious parties at the end. It's now more convenient to allocate your preferences since you can now number all the boxes above the line.

They key is to give votes to these libertarian minor parties to give them a voice against Lib/Lab in the senate. I'm happy that Leyonhjelm is there to do that, even if he does have a few personality flaws. And allocating your preferences is still important even if you believe your choices have no chance of being elected, because the AEC uses these votes to allocate electoral funding which will support their campaigns for subsequent elections.

              • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: I can see your logic and where you are coming from. But the question is: the ‘voice’ you are trying to give this person, and the supposed ‘ideology’ he stands for, will it achieve the said objective you desire ?

Hypocrisy by its nature, is false appearance of virtue/goodness, and often involves pretense or sham. For someone who has displayed this trait more than once – how can you believe whatever ‘ideology’ he espouses? That itself could be a sham.

Slut-shaming is nothing more than ‘bullying’ by another name. I know you from many comments/threads – you are against bullying, and I applaud you for that. But I don’t see why class/gender/creed/sexual orientation of the victim of bullying should come into the picture, when assessing the moral character of a bully.

A bully is basically a weak person, strong people do not need to bully others. Personally, I would find giving a vote to a bully very distasteful. And rank moral character above ideology. Because as you have mentioned elsewhere – the Golden Rule. I too, do not take kindly to being bullied, and will not support bullies. But each to their own.

            • -2

              @dazweeja:

And despite being a staunch advocate for free speech, he doesn't like free speech if it affects him(huffingtonpost.com.au)

Err. doesn't mean he has to like it when someone is rude to him. Doesn't mean you're against free speech.

And, despite Sarah Hanson-Young not being everyone's cup of tea, he totally slut-shamed her

              So what.

          • @Scrooge McDuck: So Scrooge, are you saying people should vote for a person/party based on one policy only, regardless of how vile or corrupt the rest of him/it is?

Sometimes there are no suitable alternatives on a specific policy. You can start your own party (or stand as an independent) or put up with another available option.

And criticism without an alternative is not necessarily unconstructive…

            • +1

@papachris: Don't put words in my mouth. I'm not going down your rabbit hole. You made a critical assertion without any explanation. You still haven't given an explanation, and in the time since, someone else has.

And criticism without an alternative is not necessarily unconstructive…

              That's exactly what it is!

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varieties_of_criticism#Constru…

Constructive criticism aims to show that an intent or purpose of something is better served by an alternative approach.

Since unconstructive criticism is the negation of constructive criticism, it is criticism which does not aim to show that an intent or purpose of something is better served by an alternative approach. Which is exactly what your reply was.

              • -3

@Scrooge McDuck: You sir deserve some up votes for your logical discourse and your ability to remain analytical.

              • @Scrooge McDuck: Oh really?

                1. I clearly did NOT put words in your mouth. I merely asked you a question which I note you have failed to answer.
                2. Why would I give an explanation of my reasons if someone else already has? dazweeja did a good enough job of it. I don't see the need to restate the obvious.
                3. Your response on my criticism being unconstructive because it is not constructive is merely silly. The Wikipedia article you state lists many types of criticism. So why criticise my criticism (which is what you did) because you don't think it falls into a particular one of those categories?

Anyway, I wish you a Merry Christmas sir…

        • I'm really not smart enough.

          • @idonotknowwhy: If you're not comfortable numbering all the boxes, it's worth noting you can do a partial above or below the line vote now.

You just have to number at least six boxes above the line, or number at least 12 boxes below the line.

        • +1

I love voting below the line. Makes me feel like I'm making a difference, even though that's not logical. Also gives me a chance to put the loonies last. If I'm really grasping for reasons, I'd say it's justifying the cost in printing the form…

      • -6

People vote for the Brand when they vote Green, they don't have a clue what their policies are. If they did, they wouldn't vote for them in a fit.

        • I guess I'll continue to draw dongs on the ballot then.

          • +3

@idonotknowwhy: If you'd like to see if they fit with your beliefs, decide on a couple of things you "believe in" and check them against the Greens policies: https://greens.org.au/policy

There's probably not any party out there that you 100% align with, but one of them will be closer than the others. When it comes to understanding technology related issues, they seem to be well ahead of the pack. They're frequently the only ones standing up against lib / lab on important points.

    • -7

I'm really starting to hate this country (or, to be more specific, the people who have the power in Australia). Politicians are all on the take from big business. What we need is socialism, making it illegal for private individuals to own the means of production. Democracy = capitalism = corruption.

      • +4

Venezuela is exactly what you are looking for.

Didn't work out though. Its monthly inflation is at 84000%.

A burger costs more over there than a mansion over here.

Socialism always works in the beginning. And then you run out of other people's money.

        Did not downvote you btw.

        • The 80+ million dead from socialism across the globe might disagree with you, if they could. But I'm sure you would be the first to introduce real socialism.

      • Don't assume ALL politicians are on the take. Sure some are, particularly on the conservative side of politics, but I can pretty much guarantee there are some altruistic members.

Socialism has had several chances and blew it. It doesn't work (same as Fascism, etc) because all absolute power corrupts absolutely. Of course, the world's people are beginning to see that the leading capitalist countries are blowing it too. There is likely a revolution coming, quite possibly starting with a new American civil war…

That doesn't show what DNS you're using. This will:

          ipconfig /all | findstr /R "DNS\ Servers"

Likely will be your router/gateway address, meaning the DNS settings will be in there.

          • -1

@realfancyman: The gateway address has to point to the router so it would be the router's DNS……since I'm guessing this figure overrides your DNS settings on your computer….

              • @Geryatric: OK, so the DNS settings on your computer does not get overridden by the settings on your router….. I thought it did….

But the gateway is still right, it points to the targeted router/switch if it's one of those managed switches with layer 2 or and even layer 3 capabilities…..
