Need a Laser Printer That Doesn't Ink Scam

hi, my printer broke, and im sick of paying ~$40 for ink that becomes empty after printing ~10 pictures. did some research and saw it's a widespread scam, ink costing cents to make and selling for 100 times more, printer reporting empty ink when its still nearly full. they said laser printer is better, but i saw e.g. this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/458421 and noticed the price is extremely cheap, so they have to scam u with ink to make back the money. wat price point of laser printer should i buy to avoid ink scam? i need one that allows generic refill, budget up to $700 for a reliable one that doesn't scam.

Any $30 laser printer is more than good enough. Buy refills off ebay. Toner cartridges good for 2000+ pages go for 20-30

New definition for scam … Item doesn't do what I want it to do, esp. following no research on the capabilities of the item prior to purchase.

      • Pretty sure OP was more talking about the absurd mark up on the price for no other reason then because they can. Great way to get people who don't do all the research around cheap (the printers) things (old people, for example)

Laser Printers don't use ink, therefore no ink $cam.

But Mono is B&W only, so either live with that or go Colour laser.

    P.S.
Macquarie called, said they want fee payment for overusing the word scam.
    Said, I'd let you know… :+)

    • Although the OP doesn't say it, he implies that he has an inkjet printer and that he is assessing whether to purchase a laser printer.

We bought a small mono laser printer and we are still using the original cartridge. We only use it for occasional printing but we don’t get the ink priming problem we got with the ink jet printers.

Are you printing MS paint drawings.

  • If I say scam two more times then it’s 46 scams in this scammed up post.

Get a laser. I have the brother hl1110. Cheap and cheerful and the cartridge lasts forever.

    • Me too!

Best little mono laser around. The GG have them on special quite often - usually around school holidays time.

Plenty of ebay sellers stock cheap generic toner for it.

    • Also, one of the few printers with exceptional open source drivers.

      • Any benefit to open source drivers? I just let Windows do it's thing and I'm ready to print.

        • I have this same question?

        • Only if you use Linux rather than Windows. Lots of printer drivers are either generic (and as such do not always work well) or Windows/Mac only. My printer is connected to my home server which runs Linux - so having great drivers is essential.

    • Uni student printer of choice. Cheap unit and cheap toners.

    • hi when u said generic toners does the printer accept it or give a "require genuine brother toner" message?

  • The Canon MF249DW is currently on clearance at Costco for $299.

    • Which Costco did you see it at?

Casula. I think there's one left so you'd better be quick.

Thanks. They better not scam me.

          • @bdl: Scam you how?

@Ryanek: It was a reference to the scamming of the scam of the scam OP's scamming scam post. :D

  • Don't buy ink refill at a bricks at a bricks & mortar store. Go on ebay. Very cheap refills that do a great job.

Find the hack that over rides the error that stops the printer when the toner cartrdige is "low". Run the cartridge until you lose print definition.

  • Aw man, my printer ink costs like $80 a pop…..please don't remind me……..I try not to use my printer as much now……
