Just asking, but is there any point to Sata 3 when it's a green model. Dont the green models run slower anyway?
Good price though!
Should ask the question, is there any point for SATA3 on a conventional hard drive? I'm pretty sure all the conventional hard drives on the market doesn't even saturate SATA2.
I was going to ask the same question.
Price is very good, if I needed another storage drive I would grab one.
You'd never get anywhere near needing SATA 2 interface speeds, let alone SATA 3. I am running on the old "SATA 150" and getting almost 100MB/sec, which is probably less than a WD Green can pump out continuously.
The only thing is - the 64MB Cache Buffer is fast… so there theoretically would be an advantage of SATA 3 when reading from that part of teh drive. Whether that is "noticeable" or not, I dunno.
These green drives woun't even reach sata2 speeds. Although from what I can see the sata3 is the current green model from WD, since wd20ears sata2 model is being phased out and replaced by wd20earx sata3 mode at same price bracket.
Cached I/O should make use of the higher interface speed.
how its compared to

Edit: sorry thats sata 2
That price excludes GST…But still works out to about $50 (for 4) cheaper than PCCG
GST included
Oops, sorry… see the GST is listed in the quote as part of the price, not additional… basic (fast) maths fail. :|
Haha~
When are the 3TB prices going to hit $100?
When 4TB hard drives are out.
Dang it, I bought one about a week ago for $85 oh well.
Anyway for those interested there are some benchmarks here

is this good for a NAS driver?
That depends if your NAS Box can handle "advanced format" (4K sector size) drives. My D-Link DNS-323 is not intended to, and I don't know if there is a way to make it work at decent speed with them. I am running 2 x WD Green NON-Advanced (WD10EADS) in there at the moment.
Mt Waverley represent!
Just ordered one. Now I need a SATA3 2TB Hitichi deal and a 2TB Samsung deal and I will have one of each flavour in my microserver.
Hi Stumo, are you aware of any good deal for NAS case at the moment?
The Buffalo LS-QVL is hard to beat for the money ($250 seems to be their normal price)…
http://www.ht.com.au/cart/1/part/Y9054-Buffalo-LinkStation-P…
Just make sure you get the V series, not the older one (old one doesn't have a red V on the front and is LS-QL or something)
Thanks, I am look at this Buffalo and the Netgear NV+, have not decided which one to buy. The Netgear NV+ should be a old model, but has pretty good reviews. I wonder if both can stream 1080p video (less than 10GB for a movie) via a wireless router?
Unless the NAS is unbelievably pathetic, the wireless will be the slowest path in the stream. An average 1080p video will be around the 5mbps mark, basically meaning a moderate signal strength on 802.11g will suffice, and any NAS should be able to keep up with that throughput.
Edit: And by "average 1080p", I'm referring to an encoded/compressed video, before anyone jumps in… Not a full bluray rip obviously. eg. A 2.5GB 1080p24 XviD will have a video bitrate ~3mbps.
IME you cannot stream even 720p videos over 802.11g. You might be able to over N.
Hi stumo, I just read the following information from Whirlpool, looks like the WD20EARS does not work well with The Buffalo LS-QVL.
Emailed a Buffalo in Japan and got the following response:
Regarding a recommendation HDD brands and models for LS-QVL/E, our engineers tested most of popular brands and models and following models will not be able to work well.
<Western Digital Caviar Green>
WD20EARS
WD15EARS
WD10EARS
IME you cannot stream even 720p videos over 802.11g. You might be able to over N.
Well, IME, I can, and have, streamed 1080p over 802.11g.
This drive is EARX not EARS.
Yeah, in the past when everything's going good I've had no trouble streaming even reasonably high bitrate 1080p (~8+mb/s) over my 'g' router to my Astone AP-300 so long as there was negligible other network traffic.
However, lately it's been a bit dicey, so's the router…could be time for an upgrade, I'm on the lookout for a nice, cheap N300 to replace it! ;)
The names are too close, ears vs. earx, found that the WD20EARX is actually an upgraded WD20EARS with an 6 Gb/s interface, so still be careful if using it for the Buffalo NAS.
Has anyone noticed these transer slower over a sustained transfer than the ears models?
So far copied entire contents and the ears is quicker higher transfer rate and quicker overall…. same data same media player hmmm
Interesting….. Always make me curious when a newly released product rapidly drops its price, maybe this is why?
Sold Out
damn this is cheap as, I just bought a 2tb from MSY for $89 :(
damn… sold out!!! :(
Perfect NAS drive for dirt cheap…. wouldve bought 3 of the suckers.
Hey OP/Rep, any chance for more being available?
More stock are coming in next week.
Can you make a special on the Seagate - Barracuda GREEN
Can anyone confirm if there are similar capacity/ quality hard drives available somewhere in melbourne in stock now? Even. If its $5-10 more doesnt matter, need asap.
Cheers
MSY are selling these for $85 atm for anyone that has to pay $10 postage anyway. (Check the vendor promotion list)
Definite bargain.. I have liked prices for quite a few things recently from Budget PC.
