Uber Driver Took Toll Road without Asking

Hi All, the other day; I booked an Uber to take me from Sydney Olympic Park to Granville Station and it showed me about $20 charge which I accepted.

The driver came over and there were too much closures because of this event at Olympic Park and I think Uber showed the driver to take the toll road (which was about $4 extra) which I don't really care but I thought that the Uber Driver should ask the Passenger first before taking the toll route.

Hope someone can shed a bit of a light on this issue.

Thanks guys!

You wouldn't really care and just pay whatever Uber asks for or

    • Actually, if I'm not in a hurry I'll normally advise the driver to take the non-toll route. I'd rather my trip take a couple of minutes longer and the driver get the money than the toll company.

$4? I wouldn't even bother posting that or share that story with friends.

The OP is really cheap ey

  • If I know there are tolls which are not worth taking then I will advise the driver of a different route to take. If I don't know the area well enough to advise the driver, then I just let them go - because they (+maps) probably know more than me.

Again - annoying - it's happened to me. Copped $5 of Tolls to save 2 mins, but that's the way Google Maps/Uber took the driver. Can't really blame him. It's just one of those things. Ideally the app would ask you if you want to 'avoid tolls'.

To flip it around, some business guy in a hurry might be annoyed if the app didn't use the tollway.

  • Driver should ask before taking a toll road.

If he didn't then give him his 1 star and move on, it's only $4.

I’m glad you had no luck with support and they stood their ground.

Tell them you're a tight arse before they drive off so this doesn't happen again

  • Tough thing to judge. I know I don't mind when Google Maps gives me the route with tolls, but hate it when I get a re-route and find the toll saved me a minute. Hard (illegal?) to look and evaluate this without pulling over. Even looked in the mirror when pressing "I'm at the drive-thru speaker" option in the KFC app last night.

  • The uber driver should have taken the quickest, shortest route.
Now if that involves paying a toll then so be it.
And most people take an Uber to get somewhere quickly!!!!!
It probably works out cheaper, quicker and so better for the customer.

OP should stop being so petty and appreciate the uber driver was acting in OPs best interests!

Next time OP wants a SCENIC JOY RIDE then tell the Uber driver in advance

  • Wow can't believe half the sh!t that pops up on ozb these days. Mate I'll send you $4….Jesus.

    • Yes but Granville is the clue.

  • the shedding of light in this issue is that there is no issue.
Driver will automatically take the fastest route on the map without notice. That's how the system and their business works.
What your beliefs are versus how the system works are 2 different things.
You cannot make Uber or the driver change their system.

If you wanted to avoid toll then you perhaps should voice your request prior, Otherwise systems are in place so that business operates as intended.

  • The roads were closed, so the driver took another route that happened to have tolls. I'd much rather him do that than wait around on closed roads, wasting my time.

  • It's happened to me as well. I complained to uber, they apologised and refunded me.

Must be hard being an Uber driver/psychic. (All 3 scenarios from various posts)
Someone running late for an important meeting, doesn't use tolls, gets 1 star and a complaint for not taking the fastest route.
Next passenger, too cheap to pay toll, complains about paying $4 to save 3 minutes. 1 star rating
Next one, asking the passenger which way to take. Gets 1 star for interrupting and not being professional enough to make the decision

Try a Taxi next time where you get the combination of a longer route, extra tolls and the slowest way :)

I get random wait time fees when the driver pulls up at the wrong side of the road

    All this effort for $5?

    • A lot of popular posts on here are for less than a $5 saving.

  • It's nice if the driver advises you that he's taking the toll road. I don't catch taxis or Ubers often but if a toll is involved the driver usually advises me which is always nice.

  • it's 4 dollars. move on.

  • Uber Eats took my maccas without asking.

  • look for $4 you really shouldnt be complaining take a Taxi next time and you will probably pay $40 more …

  • From memory, it was a requirement that taxi drivers took the cheapest route unless otherwise specified e.g. “M5 ok?”

Not sure if this has translated into the unregulated world of gig economy.
