A Hotel in The Bali Stole My Money from safe box!

This is more like a FYI than a question.
Few months ago I posted a topic about how to bargain and get around in the Bali etc.

Am here now and stayed in a 4 star hotel that was recommended by flight center (the one legian) and first night checking in I lost $300 aud cash.

I reported it to hotel management, they said will check the cameras who cleaned the room, next day such a waste of time they said the cleaner didn't take it and he's been working there for 5 yrs.

Last time I counted my money was in the airport and had enough change and didnt exchanged any money until got stolen.

I have basic travel insurance that won't cover lost money so if anyone coming here please be aware.

    safe box

Did you change the default code?

  • +2

There is always a code that the hotel staff would know to be able to open it even if you forget the code you set.

    • +1

True the safebox locked itself and the guy came just tonight and opened it instantly.

  • +2

First off you have no proof so be careful posting any names of hotels (not that you have yet).

Was it clear that someone had gone through the safe box? Did you have the money in an envelope or wallet that someone had moved?

While it is possible to use the override code to get into the safe, your average housekeeping staff probably wouldn't know it. Did you definitely put the money in there? Have you checked your jacket etc?

    • +2

The name of the hotel is posted in the third line.

    • +1

That's true but am more than sure they took it, I checked reviews same hotel and seen other ppl have had similar issue.
I wish seriously, that I lost it myself outside but I never took the money out with me. I cash out in aus airport, exchanged and was given money envelope and placed them all in there and came to my hotel.

So where in between the money has gone? :/

      • I’ve read through some of the reviews and could only see one that mentioned money.

Unless there is footage of the thief holding the cash outside the room I don’t see how they’ll be caught. If they took the money unless they were stupid they’d have shoved it in the pocket or somewhere for safe keeping.

Was there anything else that indicated there had been someone in the room looking for stuff? Eg suitcase had been open and it was clear someone had rummaged through. Safe door unlocked when you arrived back?

        • Yes multiple times, my access card to my room on my way got blocked once and the guy took like 15 mins to come with me to open the main door and my room door…

Just tonight I couldn't open the safebox (have nothing in there important just games etc) keyed right pin codes showed error and locked itself went down and the guy came open it instantly.

Shady as, my friend in different room noticed her passport bag was left open after cleaners cleaned her room. No money lost as she has small ruppee and use card.

TBH I only get the room cleaned every second day and stay in if it's dodgy or in a less secure country. No cash in safes either.

    • The thing is, I never asked them to clean the room (placing the doornob thing) they just got in and always do in this hotel, sometimes knocking in the 8am morning.
Kind of shocked myself as well went outside and came in, the room got serviced without me asking.

      • +2

placing the doornob thing) they just got in and always do in this hotel,

Trick is to take a business card and put it in the power slot, then keep the TV on with sound when you leave your room.

          Nice pro tip!
Im also considering buying tiny spy cams to place in my room for my next hotel.

    Carry money in ur jocks.

If someone steals it you maybhave enjoyed the moment

If not when you buy something, feel sorry for the bloke counting your notes

    Sorry to hear it,

  • Last time I counted my money was in the airport

    Then how do you know

A Hotel in The Bali Stole My Money from safe box!

This really happened, and you didn't just lose it somewhere else?

    • Like the English language?

    • No I did not, I wish I had it pisses me off to get robbed than losing it myself.

  • +1

Did you ask them to let you watch the videos yourself?
Maybe they just pretend dumb and said "video didn't show anything" and didn't even check it.

    • Possible to ask but they can delete things.

      • +2

Ask them if they can watch it again. After they do, ask them that you want to see for yourself.
If you ask them "to watch again" first and they confirm, means they still have the video and just watched it. If you ask them straight away if you can see it they will say "sorry video is deleted".

        • What's a camera going to show unless their camera is set up watching everything in your room.

          • @[Deactivated]: He said the camera can show cleaners going in the room and they asked the cleaner if he saw $300 notes. The cleaner told them he just cleaned the room and nothing else.

The other manager is like if you bring police here, you should extend your stay if they need more info, I signed and said ok.

Went there and the cops said hard to track it unless I know the note serial numbers…

            • @newbiesh: Did you check your pockets?

              • @JIMB0: More than 7 times, they came and checked the room as well and my stuff.

            • +1

              @newbiesh:

Went there and the cops said hard to track it unless I know the note serial numbers…

Wait, you can track your cash down if you know their serial numbers?! This would have been handy that one day(And many other days for that matter) where my wallet mysteriously disappeared from my pocket and somehow ended up at some building that I never been to at the time, naturally, with my $500 cleaned out….

Note to self: photograph notes or write down serial numbers….

  • This hotel is known for it has been mentioned on most of the Bali Facebook pages .

    • +1

I just checked and I think so far am holding the record most ppl were under or equal to $100 :(

It is shady af, I Remeber once my access card got blocked on my way into the hotel and they all have radios and the guy really took his time to come to my room to open the door…

Also today had issue with the safe box not opening, I have nothing in there but still things are dodgy.

  • Tell the cleaner to put it back tomorrow or you will say nothing thing and if they don’t threaten them with something

    • Such as bikies?

    • I did, I said if I get it back no questions will be asked and I drop the "case" the hotel manager said he doesn't have it.

      • Ask them to check the bin

        • Oh, they also asked me to sign a paper saying I will not disclosue this online, mine was from money envelope so hard to make stories like the cleaner cleaned the safebox and noticed some germs on 3 of the notes decided to take home to clean and bring it tomorrow.

          • @newbiesh:

they also asked me to sign a paper saying I will not disclosue this online

On what basis would they ask you to do this? You haven't even gotten your money back yet!

            • @Never Pay RRP: the manager said, ok since you went to the police and they couldnt do anything as you didnt had proof, can you sign this ?
i looked at the paper said i will not disclouse this online and review etc.
i said NOPE. that's the only thing i can do at this stage and would do.

  • I would only stay at small hotels where you can meet the owner

    • I tried to get the owner name and contact details they said I need bring police which I try to do today

  • +3

Let flight Centre know about what happened.
Maybe they can help pressure the hotel management to take this more seriously (especially if there have been multiple reports of thefts)
At the very least they can stop recommending this hotel

    • yes i have done that and have left reviews.

  • Do you didn't get your happy ending?

  • +2

I had this happened to me once and the attending police advised me afterwards to always wipe the pad and handle when leaving hotel. This way they are able to lift fingerprints which 9 out of 10 stupid staff thieves leave. Thefts like that happen very often contrary to popular belief, even in reputable hotels. Of course one needs to run into a diligent cop overseas who is actually prepared to do something lol

    • It it's staff they have a hard reset for when the customer forgets the code. They can open it at will.

    • I actually thought of that and took the money envelope with me to the police station to pick finger prints, police said its not easy for them to do that as it is plastic bag and not glass -_-
Going to police wasn't helpful at all said forget about it and it is very hard to find the money, probs threw the file papers in the bin when I left.

Just as I was checking out today I noticed a staff (not cleaner) holding a radio receiver touching his card and attempting to go into a different room then just walked away when he saw me, I waited there to see what he's doing and he was just wondering around then asked me if I want to know where the lifts are to exit lol

It’s Bali. Cesspit of the world.

    • +2

Was my first time. And probs last time

    • Regrettably I agree.

Have never been so annoyed with predatory locals in any other place I have visited.

If they rely on a tourist economy, don't rob and offend the tourists.

      Pity really.

      • +1

went there with family earlier this year

have never been so disappointed and angry by some of the things I experienced whilst travelling there

and I have solo backpacked Russia/Siberia/Mongolia/Nepal etc.

        will not be returning

          Please share a few!

Mine were very pedestrian, the street hustlers screaming motorbike in my face, and muttering cocaine under their breath. "massage". Not being able to look at an item in a shop without being hounded. The first price being 5 to 10 times the real price… Uber drivers being scared of the local transport mafia… Such a pity.

          • +1

            @ozbjunkie: hahah massage
            so on point.
also when they say something dont look back or they and push you into their shop, first night i was walking some guy said taxi? i walked by, said shisha? i ignored, said marijuana? i ignored then said cocaine? i looked back as i was shocked he ran to me and I had hard time to explain i dont want cocaine.

i could not look into the shops as they hard to get out wihtout buying things.

i found this tip useful: putting small amount of money like 20$ worth of rupees in one pocket so if you dont want to get forced buying something or get "massaged" you can say you have to change money, even tho some wanted to go with them to the exchange but you can say your money is in hotel and it is very far or they come with you.

you explained well, on my way from airport to hotel i was qouted for 50$ AUD worth for taxi, then walked away said 20$ ended up getting "blue birds" taxi with meters on and after looping around the town and get us to hotel after 40 mins got charged 8$ which is better.

they all like "cheap dollar cheap" cant have peace going to the beach "surfing" "cheap surfing" " want unberalaa" tattoo, massage, foot massage, bracelets, bow etc etc.

            • @newbiesh: I think the keystone in the overarching theme of rudeness and absurdity that was Bali was rocking up to the international departures terminal of the airport, getting out of a taxi, and having some Gronk scream "taxi" in my effing face.

Yes mate, I want a taxi, having only just arrived at international departures. Never been so happy to finish a holiday.

        • oh phew glad i didnt go with family was planning. nope nope.

I bet this guy counted wrong at the airport or lost it

Don’t go blaming them if you have no concrete evidence

    • Can't be counted wrong I cashed out same day from atm on my way to the airport, cant be lost because I exchanged $100 at money travel and was given an envelope and placed all the money from bank and exchanged in same bag that has zip.

I wished I lost it myself and was my fault that way I would not be so pissed off as I am atm.

    • -1

So you weren’t there, and have no concrete evidence for your comments, sounds like you need to take your own advice.

      • Yea next time traveling planning to attach go cam pro to my head.

  • You should check out the bali bogan Facebook page someone posted a safe lock using 2 clamps. It does happen a lot in bali

  • U live u learn. So couple tricks I’ve come up with during any travel:
    1. As mentioned before, wipe the pad and handle on the safe every time before leaving. Explain to the police and DEMAND action i.e. FPrinting
    2. Carry a simple floor door stopper thingy with you everywhere to avoid unwelcomed budge in.
    3. Always advise reception both verbally and in writing not to attend nor access your room for any reason other than emergency. Includes scheduled cleaning if you don’t need one.
    4. Put a personal seal on the door in inaccessible location and take time stamped pix of such. Nothing fancy, they don’t anticipate it; i use smth sticky like chewing gum and hair string on top door frame.

Most importantly buy travel insurance including cash theft. Most often same price as others with upto 800$ in compensation

    • yea planning to put spy cams inside my hotel room and dont take much cash, rather pay bank overseas charge than getting robbed.

  • How was it taken if it was in the safe?
Hotel employees can open the safe, yes, however if they do, closing it again requires a new pin, so unless they knew your pin, they'd have to close it with a new pin you didn't know. You would then be aware of them opening it when your pin stops working, or if they left it open.

    • these safe boxes aren't safe at all, usally they get rest once used mastercode or key but the ones in that hotel tend to "lock" itself, happend to me again after i lost money i entered correct pin and said error had to ask them come up and open it.

    • I think that's what OP experienced. The safe "locking itself" was actually a reset brought on by somebody opening it.
