broad unfocused beam means not very bright.
3xAAA will not last long. Expensive to keep replacing if using alkaline.
You want focused beam and 2xAA (or li-ion) for a headlamp.

Depends on what you're using it for. I've a few headlamps ranging from cheap little things like this to ones with focused beams that will reach over 100 metres. Something like this is ideal for around a camp site or reading.
For camp site or reading, you don't want a narrow spot, but a 40-60 degree beam.
This is like a flood-light, so needs ten times as much power to get the same brightness (lux) as a proper reading/camping lamp.So either it is too dim, or you are forever changing batteries.
I have these (different brand) and they're plenty bright enough for the kids around camp. Easily last 5 nights with 3 x AAA Eneloops or Turnigy. Not very sturdy and don't expect them to last long but I also don't have to worry about losing a $40 head torch.
A lot of people get hung up on having torches as bright as the sun rather than letting their eyes adjust and using a little light.
I find that these are bright enough for the kids to take on scout hikes and cheap enough that I'm not too upset when they are lost / broken.
The torches are also light compared to the larger / bright li-ion models.Around home I use rechargeables, but send the kids on camps with cheap AAAs.
Any example of Focused beam, 2X AA headlight you can recommend? Ideally dimmable, or with red light?
Sorry, I stocked up on some 2xAAA from Bunnings when they were clearing. At least it is easier to recharge in pairs.
Looking at eBay, I see cheap 1xAA - actually, that makes more sense. The inverters are reasonably efficient.

review: good emitter, but not even slightly waterproof as claimed.
We've 3xAAA 3/9 LED flashlights that we use for emergencies. They do the job of illuminating rather well for a $4 flashlight. We also use Aldi AAA rechargeable.
I had one of these, then i got sick of it going dead too quick and got a Nitecore NU20 instead
