  • Too much power consumption. Looking for something with low watt for a headless media server.

What?? NEW 240GB SSD / 480GB SSD 3Years Manufacturer Warranty

      We've got an:

      • HP Mircoserver '36L

      going onto eBay,
      next time they offer
      $1 total fees for
      Listing + Final Value

      Dunno how different its
      Power cost would be,
      but HP would… FYI

I picked up a Optiplex 9020m from ACT Trader during one of the recent 10% off deals. It's currently $224.10 with PAPPY code. I'd rather pay a little more for a smaller, quieter machine.

Does this make a good Plex server even though it's using a 4th Gen processor?

        • it depends on how many streams/quality you want.
generally speaking it should do a good job bar the above

          for 200$ i'd want 4th gen tbh

          • @Nilfunds: bar the above what sorry?
            would it transcode x265?

            • @Arcayne: Better to do hardware transcoding with a video card than rely on the CPU - requires plex pass though.

            • @Arcayne: bar depending on how many clients you're serving.
how many plex streams at one time?
default Plex server is direct play - as in no transcoding.

one 1080 transcode needs 2000 CPU mark score
3470 CPU has CPU mark of 6700 so it should do 3 1080p streams no problems.
thats some rough calculations for ya.

but honestly, 3rd gen for 200$ is not such a hot bargain.
aim for 4th gen hasswell CPU if you ask me

I'm also concerned about power usage. I've just discovered my Chromebox-based server is limping towards death. Before that I've used Raspberry Pi's and a Cubox i4. I'm leaning towards using an old Raspberry Pi 1 coupled with a Dell Optiplex 9020 with Wake-on-LAN.
RPi can monitor RSS feeds and download torrents to USB, run pi-hole, run a few scripts. Probably run mysql for kodi database.
Dell server can wake up when needed for media streaming or anything else (might run Owncloud or something on it).

For the record, an extra 50W left on full-time costs around $130/year.
Cost to run = (Power usage in watts) x (hours in a day) x (days in a year) / (watts in a kW) x (electricity cost per kWh)
      5024365/1000*(electricity rate, assume 30c) = $131.40

So finding something that's 10-20W vs something that's 80W can save you ~$100 a year.

      • I find it depends how many drives you have in the machine too, and what kind of workload its doing.

If you are pulling torrents through a VPN you will want something that can handle the crypto overhead.

I have a 9020 and it fluctuates between 28-40W depending on what its doing - good thing about these machines is they often have 80+ Gold PSU's.

      • Cubox i4! Wow, that's something you don't hear being talked about much. I have 2 x Cubox i4 Pros. One runs Arch Linux and is my home server etc, and the other is running Kodi via LibreElec, but unfortunately I can't upgrade it now as they seem to have dropped support for it.

        • Yeah, the limited number of USB ports was a pain for a server, and the Kodi updates kept breaking that, so now it's in storage until I find another use for it.

Would probably be better to get the 9020 models with a 1151 socket motherboard. I think these ones have the 1155 motherboards.

  • I think it's a waste of watts most of the time. There are low entry nucs with 4k streaming capability that will use less than 12w on max (7w on average).
