Acer AOD-255E Netbook $246 @ Officeworks [Nationwide and Online]

210

Hey all,

thought this wasn't too bad of a deal if you want to or in the market for a netbook. For the price, it seems pretty decent and has a 6 cell battery for longer lasting performance. i do recall seeing this exact same model they had last week in store for around $400+. So it seems they have dropped it quite significantly!

Great for uni, work, or if you just need portability etc. Tax time is around the corner so might be worth getting one! :)

I have had the Acer D250 for two years and it is great.

You might even be able to get an additional $39 cashback if you find an SKU of:
    AO.25100.440FE (ends 30 June)
    LU.SDE0D.236 (ends 31 May)
    LU.SDJ0D.151 (ends 31 May)

    • Have you tried playing a full hd mkv movie on it? Has it got gigabit networking too, by any chance?

    • Is there any way to check the sku when you purchase online?

I've been waiting for my emachine cash back for 5 months now.

    • +2

You should follow it up - they take about 6 weeks.

      • +1

Llama's right - I chased them up for mine after about 6 weeks and they then paid up within a week. Hopefully you've copied the paperwork that you sent in as they asked for me to fax it to them

        • My em250 cashback took about 8 weeks. 5 months is stretching it big time. Definitely time to chase up on this.

  • How is the battery life, if you were to watch youtube/movies?
I've been waiting for the N550 Dual core one's to be on sale for $300 mark but its at $360 for awhile now.

Anyway you want to read this before you get it :)

  • dam! i just bought this netbook last week at jb for 298, thought that was cheap lol. It was 360 at officeworks online, and most the OW stores in Brisbane were out of stock to price beat. Great that you can get it online with free shipping too.

It's a great little netbook for uni, battery life is great too

  • Hmmm… I got mine 2 months ago. Was $378!!! :( Bummer. My only consolation is I got the GST back on it since I was travelling.

    • It's ok. Ask Kingsville he got his D250 probably for $4XX-$5XX (2 years ago).

      • I think mine was about $400 before $49 cashback… two years ago

  • I own Acer D257 (2xCore Atom) and it's barely good enough. Anything lower-spec is just land-fill, IMO.

  • The OW paper catalog/flier says it's only got a 3-cell battery…

Has anyone actually got one of these - in the last couple of days, from OW -
so we know which battery it actually comes with, please…? :-/

On how to put it to good use: It's gotta be better than any of the
"eBook readers" for reading PDF files on a trip.

(Just remember to switch off the WiFi before boarding. BTW, it's
easy on the ASUS netbook. How easy is it to do it on an ACER?)

    Oh, I'd miss ASUS's quick-boot with an ACER 'D255E… ACER's HAPPY
netbook (also shown in OW's catalog) has dual-boot: Win 7 & Android.

    (The dual-boot version isn't as cheap….)

  • Hmm, yes 3 cell or 6 cell :(

    • 6 cells (from OfficeWorks) - catalof/flier is wrong

Better: You ALSO get Dual-Boot option: Win 7 Starter -OR- Android.

(I should have guessed: After all, Acer has 2 Android-based "Honeycomb" tablets to peddle.)

      • Also, it's got an N455 processor.

        Their AOD257' has a dual-core N570, for ~ $100 more @ OW
If there's a netbook worth waiting to drop in prict, it's the '257.

Oh, you'll find the '255 comes in a thicker box…
        'cause it's got a black, [plastic] Acer dust cover / carry case;
that'll get you to safely your fav lappy-bag shop for something better.

Of course, poor Aussie uni student will use this carry case til it's shredded… ;-/

        • Oh, to upgrade this puppy to 2gb RAM,
you get to remove a huge (compared to its
          ASUS counterparts) bottom panel…

Of course, DDR3 [probably the reason for N455]
is what you'll want to buy for that upgrade…
(so, no removing last netbook's upgrade SODIMM
          to re-use here…)

I don't know how much you see "under the hood"

Anyone know which version of Android it has?
(I suppose it's a 3.x but have yet to find out.)

This is DEFINITELY the right below-$250 netbook
FOR THE BUSH (except maybe for battery-life,
between charges… for which ASUS may excel),
if only because it's double boxed (for lengthy
trips over Outback [SA] corrugated roads… ;-)

Dunno if HK-based eBay vendors have any 9-cell
          batteries for it, as yet…?

        • See the ozbargain thread on the AOD 257.OW have pricematched it for $246 re powerbuys & Retravision.I bought one yesterday for $233.

  • If you can hold off your netbook purchase now, this is coming: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/30/asus-brings-out-extra-ski…

Slick and thin, first time in a long time I had gadget envy. Well, if you don't count the XPS8300 from the states that priceusa won't ship.

    • +1

How often does it happen that when at shows they declare price of $200 only to go "Ooooops we meant $300" on release?

    • +1

Suggested price of $200… in what country? It's not really an article anyway.

Either-way, if we waited for every new gadget that's "coming soon", we'd never buy anything. And personally, I prefer "run-out models", if there was nothing wrong to begin with. If it was fine then, it's even finer now when prices keep dropping! :)

      • I think its pretty safe to assume its in USD and thats only for the one with meego, so no windows tax there.

        • The currency, and the country are two different points.

What an item sells for in Australia vs. Elsewhere can change a LOT.

  • Can anyone comment on the battery life of this netbook with wifi enabled

  • ^ Does it REALLY matter for that price? You'll get 4hrs out of a dog-biscuit these days. Anything more is a bonus. Even on paper, you can see it's got a 6cell battery, instead of the standard 3cell other netbooks come with.

It's not like there's something wrong with these machines - The exact opposite. They're not cheap-n-nasty, reduced-quality, or ANYTHING like that. It's a full-fledged ATOM netbook, by a reputable brand, available from the local shop for $246. Less questions, more buying! :D

  • Yeah free delivery, but don't forget the $4.95 handling fee.
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/landing/delivery-policy…

  • The guy at OW told me that this (or the below-$250 MSI netbook they have now) has a 2-year warranty,
but I think he was mistaken… neither box seemed to mention warranty.

Anyone else have a different experience? :-/

PS I think he meant the less well established brand, ie, MSI.

  • It seems that Acer has paid a bit more for its Win 7 Starter license
(or Microsoft has added more to that version of Win 7), 'cause

…Office 2010 Starter (ie, Word Starter & Excel Starter) are INCLUDED

Price to Run / Use: Some Advertising (So, what if you never go on-line?!?)

(You can also unlock the Office 2010 software installation, ie,
buy buying a key from MS.)

This is different than any other Win 7, that I've seen to date…
    but is a nice feature.

This puppy seems to be getting better & better… ;-)

So, you ALSO get Windows Live (including Win Live Movie Maker, etc.)

Thanks, Acer (ASUS's netbooks' Win 7 Starter didn't include either of the above S/W's)

  • i bought this and its good for the price

i format and i install win 7 ultimate 64bit edition because the preinsstalled Win 7 starter is 32bit

    • Why bother?!
