3 days spare in a Europe trip - where would you go?

Hi all

My first time to europe is coming up shortly, and we have it mostly planned. We are going to:

  • Italy
  • London
  • Barcelona
  • San Sebastian/Bilbao

We have a few days leftover and we can't decide where to go. Names like Mykonos, Bergen, Corsica have been thrown around but we are really not sure.

What would you guys recommend? We aren't looking to do wild parties or anything crazy, more just interested in good food, pretty landscapes, and somewhere not packed with British tourists (here's looking at you Majorca/Ibiza)

    Santorini.

I personally really enjoyed the eastern european cities like Prague and Budapest. Athens was also amazing

    Highly recommend the above places

I would let the flights decide.

Where will you be before/after this stopover? I’d go wherever I only had to take one relatively cheap flight. You can go on the airport page on Wikipedia to find all destinations and airlines. You’ll probably find some random location you’d never considered.

Either that or I’d add 1 night to 3 of my existing stops.

    • The flights aren't really important as we are staying in all the places I mentioned for a while, and this free section will be between Barcelona/Rome - so it's pretty central and it's not too expensive or long to fly anywhere!

      Good thoughts though thanks.

So I started going through destinations on the Barcelona airport wiki that I’d recommend, and came up with this list:
        *Belgrade
        *Riga
        *Brussels
        *Berlin
        *Cologne
        *Warsaw

I was going to see which also go to Rome, but I got distracted by these two cities: Munich or Vilnius.

Definitely recommend either of those two cities. Both lovely for different reasons, both have a lot of good food and drink, and I would go back to either in a second.

          Thanks man, appreciate the suggestions!

p.s. you have to put a space after the asterisk for it to be a dot point fyi :)

@[Deactivated]: Oh ta. Wasn’t trying to make the formatted bullets, that’s just how I do it on the phone/when texting =p

      • train up to Lake Como -you won't regret it. OR some walking in the Cinque Terra

  • Go skiing in Andorra

    • In the middle of summer?

      • Well I don’t know when your going

Shortly could be next week or 6 months away

        Either way it’s nice

        • They have morning skiing in Tignes in the French Alps in July, at least they did last year.

  • Venice! There is nowhere else like it.

Florence is nice too, lots of lovely winding streets, art and good food. Stay a bit further out of town in Florence if you want to avoid tourists.

The train ride down from Venice to Rome (it also goes through Florence) is quite fast and interesting. Can be as quick as flying by the time you factor in airport transfers and waiting times.

    • We are already going to all those places in Italy! Thanks tho :)

Try Lisbon, Portugal is interesting and quite inexpensive, or Poland but you need more than three days if possible. The people are great and again not too costly or over run with crowds - use local Polish tour agents as they have a much more to offer, we used Intopoland google them they did a great job for us!.

just chill out wherever you are and take in the location.

it's not a competition for how many places you can visit.

    • Lmao I am aware, we are chilling out in the places we are going. I'm not trying to make it a whirlwind trip, we are staying in four places for about a week each and have some spare time that we had allocated to go somewhere else.

      • cool bananas.

check out barcelona, stay in the Gothic quarter.

        groovy place.

Sardinia. Iceland. Krakow. Really depends where you are before and after the gap, whether you can easily get transport to/from.

    • It'll be most likely b/w Rome/Barcelona - have got Sardegna in mind, it would be really nice. But we can go anywhere really, transport isn't too much of an issue most flights are pretty short.

      • +1

Flights are short but it doesn't mean your local airport has a connection direct to your destination airport. Connecting flights also add up quickly especially with luggage! Also depends what you like to see and do too… either way have fun :)

        • Absolutely - we are keeping all that in mind. But we are going with just carryon so that the luggage thing wouldn't be an issue and we could do as much stuff like this as we can.

          Thanks for the wellwishes :)

I loved Marseilles… Cote D'Azur is between Italy and Barcelona.

    • I would do this trip by train. Local trains between Italy and Marseille are cheap and frequent, hug the coastline for some lovely views… hop on and off if you want to visit Nice or Cannes for lunch. Lots of fast trains between Marseille and Barcelona.

  • +2

Split or Dubrovnik, quick trip from Rome.

Are you planning on visiting Cinque Terre while in Italy? It's got amazing walks between towns with views during the day and got a great atmosphere of being 'outside the big cities'. (And you could do a day trip from CT to Pisa too if the Leaning Tower is on your bucket list)

    • We are trying to avoid all the really tourist-y bits as my partner has been there and done them all before, and as it's peak season they'll be chockablock.

  • +6

Just came back from a 3-month trip to Europe myself :) 3 days in my opinion is not a lot of time once you factor in transportation, so I would suggest somewhere along the way. Another vote for Marseille - lovely port, lots of food options and markets for everything! You can also do a day trip out to the beautiful Calanques National Park. An easy city to visit for 3 days.

  • +2

Agree Calanques National Park is stunning, be prepared for a serious hike if you walk it. The nearby seaside village of Cassis is also a lovely place to visit for a much deserved drink after your hike.

  • Since no one suggested this yet - how about a place in the Alps or a valley there. It's beautiful year-round.
Places like Garmisch in Germany, or Innsbruck, Salzburg in Austria would be relatively easily accessible. Vienna is also a very nice city for a day.

Other places that come to mind, but may need more transport, are the Rheinfall, Freiburg (Germany), Black Forest (Schwarzwald) and anywhere around the Bodensee.

    Have fun!

  • If you have the money spare then Switzerland, otherwise Austria. You have to see the mountains. Beautiful at all times of the year.

  • +1

South of France is lovely as others have posted, or do a little more in Spain. As a foodie, I loved Seville and some of the areas around there though nowhere in the world is as good as San Sebastián IMO. :)

  • +1

Going to more places in Italy would be your best bet as you can utilise their train services. Saves you so much time. Lake Como was beautiful.

    • Agree Lake Como is stunning. Highly recommend staying at the town of Como, the old town is beautiful and the transport connections are best for ferry as well as train to Milan airport. Check out the Green Way walk that you can do connecting some of the lakeside villages. Just make sure you check the ferry time table as the village it starts/ends from (depending on what direction you approach) doesn’t have a ferry service.

  • Go to the Ukraine. Lviv is amazing, cheap and accessible.

  • There are very cheap flights in and out of Vienna. It would be rushed but you could spend a night in Hallstatt.

    • Hallstatt is extremely crowded. I was there 3 night ago for 3 nights. Amazing place but i stayed in Obertraun which is 1km from hallstatt.

      • Geez. The instagram effect really is ruining places. When I went in late June 2016 I drove straight there and stayed at a reasonably priced hotel about 200m from the centre. It was pretty busy but I wouldn't say crowded and certainly not unpleasant.

  • +1

Amesterdam is the place to go.

  • Portugal - if you want some adventure go to Lisbon and see Sintra, a collection of castles and gardens. Incredible! Relaxing option would be Porto for nice food and wine. If the Algrave down south is also stunning for warm weather and beaches. Over all very accessible, easy to get around and cheap.

    • I agree with this suggestion! Close to Spain which you're going already and the place and food are incredibly good.

  • +1

Three days? Good food? Pretty landscapes? Santorini. You're welcome.

  • +1

If you really want to go rogue, take the Ferry from Eastern Italy across into Albania. An undiscovered part of Europe - you won't experience anywhere else like this

To get off piste into other interesting areas of Europe, why not fly across to Bucharest, rent a car and do a 3 day loop through transylvania (transfagarasan highway, Sigisoara, Brasov)

Staying a bit closer to some of your existing plans:
    - Naples is interesting (Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento)
    - Could head up to Andorra from Barca
    - In the UK, train up to Edinburgh for a few nights

  • Budapest
    Krakow
    Lisbon
    Amalfi coast

    Would be my suggestions!
