Why Do Australian Department Stores Only Sell Crappy Phones?

All the phones sold in supermarkets and department stores are crappy, the specifications are like decades ago.

you want coles to sell $2400 iphone ?

    • Why not? More resellers means more competition. Currently people can only buy locked phones from carriers or JB, HN with hugely marked up price.

Btw, which iPhone is selling $2400?

They sold top of the range Samsung at a time at woolworths but they stopped - most likely because no one was buying .

iPhone XS Max 512 is $2369 right now.
Coles/WW are going for the impulse buy crowd, the "oh that's cheap, and I need a phone for my son" type person.
Plenty of competition online for high-end phones, and it's not like more competition will reduce an iPhone price

Why not? More resellers means more competition.

Only when they have the necessary volume and supply chain infrastructure to be able to compete. Woolworths and/or Coles (and many other stores) do not have the staff knowledgeable enough to sell phones. Why don't car dealerships start selling phones too?

Plenty of online retailers for phones and the like.

      • Nobody goes to supermarkets to buy expensjve phones

        David jones do sell iphones.

Most have rrp anyway so there isnt mucch real competition.

Think of all the bonus plastic food containers you could get!

Sup mate, I'll get a 20 pack Winnie blues. And chuck in an iPhone XS Max while you're at it. Cheers!

And? Do you struggle to purchase a flagship phone do you? Is there a lack of retailers that we need them sold by Coles/WW?

  • +1

Im not where you think all this massive markup is. Wholesale to retail on phones is rarely above 20%.

I go to Officeworks to buy phones and I got to Coles to buy milk. Both owned by Coles Group

      Both owned by Coles Group

      Not since November 2018.

Ah Wesfarmers now. Thanks for correcting.

        • +1

Only Officeworks owned by Wesfarmers, since November 2018.

Because they pay staff minimum wage?

    I agree

I also wanna know why JB hifi sells crappy vegetables

    • Yes. It is so funny that supermarkets are selling insurance and credit cards.

      • And doing loans now apparently.

  • The expired nokia 3 deal at woolworths for $80 and $40 credit included was great. Vodafone's credit lasts a long time. Previously zte zip was ok at the time. I was also going to buy a ZTE Blade in 2014 at Auspost. Nokia 5 at Aldi for $199 was good too. I guess you just have to be patient.

  • To give a legit answer it's because no one impulse buys a flagship phone outright, they buy them on a contract which requires time and a trained employee neither of which is the wheelhouse of supermarkets or a target/kmart

  • Thats because the stores only sell prepaid handsets.
Prepaid handsets are always cheap ones.
Some of the better ones are unlocked but still usually under $300
