Remove Duplicate Photos from PC

Just wondering what's the best way to delete duplicate photos from my windows PC.
I've just randomly copied photos from my phone to my PC as a way of backing them up and have ended up with lots and lots of duplicate photos.

There seem to be several different options but just wondering what people use and recommend.

Preferably free but open to paying if there is a really good product out there.

Thx

There's a built in Duplicate file finder in CCleaner, which you may already have installed.. https://www.ccleaner.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner/findin…

I've used Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder a number of times and it's great.

It's a FREE program and comes without any included spyware, malware or viruses.

It hasn't been updated for 7 years but still works on W10.

  • Thanks guys i'll check out those recommendations and give one of them a whirl

  • I'll throw in Google Photos, if you're prepared to put it all in the cloud - the High Quality option is free and unlimited for both photos and videos, and the image recognition is second to none for finding stuff e.g. pets/people/documents etc.

If you've got a whole bunch of photos it'll take a while to upload though - but using Google Photos on your phone removes the need to back everything up via the PC as a middleman. You can always set it to have downloaded copy from the cloud on your computer anyway via Google Drive. And the uploader is smart enough to ignore duplicates as it finds them so you don't use excess bandwidth.

  • With photos, or anything important like that, it is good to have a backup as well - 2 copies all up. I recommend doing a backup first, just in case, then run the duplicate finder, delete the copies, then keep a backup off the computer.

    • 3 copies. Two local (to compensate for drive failure) and one remote (to compensate for fire/theft/other damage that may occur to both drives).

  • My question is how to find duplicate pictures with same image but different dimension and file size?

    • Some duplicate image finders will perform some image analysis to find out how similar the images are.

After the comparison is done, it will spit out a list of files (with thumbnails) that it thinks are dupes with a similarity rating, you then click the files that you can see are duplicates to mark them for deletion.

      • Yehp - Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder does this and its free

  • Try Visipics I think that's what it's called, it's not 100% accurate as it seems to have missed some images that I can see that are clearly duplicates but according to the program it isn't, but should be good enough for automation, of course you can check the results to make sure it deletes the correct duplicate and not the original…..there's another one, albeit paid option which I haven't tried whose name escapes me but supposedly that does a better job, naturally since it's paid you would be get better support and not be left in the dark when you ask why these images aren't picked up as duplicates and get left hanging for over a year with no response…….. [stares at Visipics support]

  • Hey OP, I had the similar issue then I created a simple java app to find duplicates based on picture taken, its 99.99% accurate except the pictures that taken with high shutter speed lol
If you still after, message me, I can share the app.
