$100 off a Google Pixel 3a [$549] or 3a XL [$699] When You Trade-in Any Old Working Smartphone @ JB Hi-Fi

841

Saw this today in-store at JB Hifi Macquarie Centre. Pretty good deal for a just released phone. Even cheaper with discounted gift card. Looking to buy the XL for the missus. No experience with trade-ins - what do they do with an old smartphone?

Edit 1:
6.5% discount on eGift Card for AGL Rewards Members - thanks PoRKroLL. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/458828 Note it takes up to 3 days if you pay by bank transfer. Pay 1% credit card fee and the eGift Card is emailed within a couple of hours.

Edit 2: Appears to be nationwide. Thanks ndwalters and Rowen.

    • Ends 29th May.

    • It is on in Brisbane. Small notes on Google table. I just traded in my 9 yo “smartphone” for $350. Awesome deal, effectively 30% discount.

      • Tablet ? Can you give me more info on the $350 off deal?

        • Not tablet, table where they have Google Pixel 3 phones.
I just asked staff and they confirmed $350 trade in deal against Pixel 3.

  • Thanks also to OP, traded in iPhone 4 I had laying around and used gift cards from AGL rewards deal at Robina Gold Coast store.

  • Bought my wife the 3a just prior to this deal. Just popped in to say its a great phone and i have phone envy.

  • Blackberry considered a smartphone ? It has apps.

    • Read that Windows was accepted, so Blackberry should too. Just go to different store if one store isnt bothered to find or add the phone in database

  • Can you add this deal to the deal where you get a $400 gift card for porting to Telstra for 12 months?

    • +1

Very likely. I got asked if I want to join telstra with my new phone as they have a Telstra deal. IDK details.

Just got the 3a XL. Just be aware that the staff might give your trade-in a good checking out, including power, volume buttons and screen but YMMV. Trade in wasn’t listed and phone was a bit dodgy but they accepted it :)

I have an xperia E used as an alarm clock I bought for $20 at Dick Smith closing down sale, trade in for $100 at JB. thats a bargain.

  • Best Android experience, great battery, best camera out there

  • Just curious, ….
Did you guys factory reset the phone before bringing to JB please.
If yes, then how did their staff check the phone to be working?

    • +1

      Yes full default.

They just set it up again (kept hitting skip).

  • I've decided to take the jump and upgrade from my Moto G5+. Trading in an 8GB Nexus 4 though. Maybe I'll take in an old Blackberry and see if they accept it first. I've purchased the AGL gift cards so I think it'll work out to be around 20% off.

  • Got told by my local JB today that they won't accept either my old working nexus 4 or Samsung S2 as they are not on the 'eligible phone list'. Nothing about a specific phone list on the website. Anyone else get denied like this?

    • I'd challenge that - the advertising clearly states 'any old smartphone* in working condition' - if it said Terms and Conditions apply then fine - however your phones qualify ….

      • Thanks klownz, I'm going to :)

    • They took my S2

      Try a different store

I took my 2011 galaxy note, as in the original that takes a full sized sim. They accepted the trade, after checking the t&c that is already stated elsewhere in this thread.

However, the phone couldn't be found on their trade in software (the earliest was note 3) and trying to put it through as 'unlisted' didn't work. After trying for half hr the store mgr just gave me a $90 discount and I happily took it.. and I kept my old phone as well.

YMMV because as the manager explained, JB stopped doing trade in for a while so a lot of stores just wasn't familiar with the deal or might have trouble putting it through the system.

  • Worked, $350 off and price matched Harvey Norman ($949).
    Traded iPhone SE, cracked screen.
Bought the pixel 3 for $589.
    Thanks for posting the deal.

    • Does this mean that you can price match with another store and get a $350 for trading your old phone at the same time?
      Can somebody please confirm?

      • This is what I did.

  • The banner ad for the discount has been removed from the webpage. Can they do that eventhough the expiry was meant to be on the 29th May?

    • ^This. I just ordered and am waiting for a gift card just for this deal.

    • Does seem a bit dodgy to pull the banner before the advertised deal expiry date.

    • Even though it's not on the website the store may still have the banner near the phones. I went to Springvale Homemaker centre JB and they were well aware of the offer and knew exactly how to process the trade in of non-listed phones. Very simple and quick process at this store.

      • bobdane1 did they stack it with the HN price match?

        • I got the 3a…but damn, didn't realise the 3 could be had for $589

So after sending JB Support an email got a call from my local store. They will now do the trade in on my old S2. Explained to me that the internal details sent to stores for the deal were very confusing and contradictory.

So after stuffing around online with research and emails, multi phone calls and two visits to the store finally got it sorted, 100 buck discount earned :-P

    • Glad to hear you got it!

  • They accepted an old BlackBerry 8100 for my trade in. The sales guy had to get manager approval but was all good. The flyers were still up and the guy had a one pager on how to process the trade in for this deal. Southland Vic store.

  • Anyone successful trade in with Alcatel U3? I was told it has to be unlock, no crack no cheap etc. So getting the coles $19 phone can't get a discount.

    • Traded in a Telstra Essential Plus which is an Alcatel 1a I think. No issues with trading it in, they never checked if it was carrier locked or not.
FWIW I was offered $580 on the pixel 3a without trade-in, so the trade-in only gave another $30 on top of that.

  • Not all phones can be traded in, JB have a list. I had an iPhone 4s, but that was not accepted. Oldest acceptable iPhone was a 5. At the end was able to get a $69 discount to bring price down to $580.

    • +1

That's not really right going by their banner and in store signs saying any working smartphone. Also going by the phone I and others have traded in. If it wasn't on the list they could manually override to bring the trade value to $100. They have a one page FAQ/instruction set on how to do this.

  • I bought 2 pixels 3a's. Thanks for the deal.

  • So this expires the end of tomorrow? Or tonight already?

    • Yup 29th May both Pixel 3 and 3a deal expires

      • Hmmm… that's a cryptic answer lol.

Question is if it means that the promotion expires tonight already or end of tomorrow…

        • On the Ad, it says 29th May 2019. Maybe end of Business day tomorrow.

  • Expires tonight
I tried my luck with an old ZTE, but wasn't accepted too. He tried the IMEI number, and the system didn't accept it
Oh well, I'll wait for another deal

  • Snuck in today.

Traded in an old Nokia Windows phone. Only one storeperson knew what to do but once they directed him to me all sorted quickly. Score!

  • Super peed off. Quickly bought a cheap phone on gumtree today, only to be told at JB HIFI it needs to be unlocked - and it's locked to Optus :(

    • Try another store

      • It ended today

Guy at desk said it may be extended due to it being a popular promotion

        • I didn't know Telstra did a plan, how do you get $400 voucher, $100 trade-in

        • How much is the telstra plan month? data etc

  • Just got the newsletter
    Offer is back
    Valid till 11 june

  • I missed the trade-in by one day. The staff said it may come again.
I hope it will come asap.
