Samsung Galaxy Note 8 64GB - $699 @ JB Hi-Fi

260

Unlocked Telstra variants (some Telstra preinstalled apps, splash screen and slower updates) available in black and Gold. Good for those with JB gift cards or access to discounted gift cards (eg. RACQ Rewards).

This was a good deal, but there seems to be some questions as to whether all stock was brand new or Australia stock.

  • its been better in the past with Target https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448138

Yep, but not many people were able to get one from that deal as it went out of stock very quickly.

this is not a good price given current drop across all phones. u could of got a note 9 grey for $680 with GC discount in an ebay deal. ive looked at phone prices for a while and i can tell u never bother looking at jb's prices, consistently much higher than cheapest deals.

  • Great price for a greater phone. This one is a keeper for years to come for sure.

    • Why? Are you planning some explosions?

    • of course

    • They'll explode when you start being funny

  • With 5G rolling out very soon starting with Telstra i wonder how quickly the 4GX phones are being getting rid off..

    • +3

Just like 3g it will be here for that little while longer. Just because 4g was out 2g hanged around for a while. So i can imagine with 5g it would be the same. 4g will be here a while longer. 6g might start the need to free up 4g so this can be used for 6g.

    • How's the 5G phone battery developing? I remember reading it was pretty bad for battery.

      • +2

depends on how it is implemented… i remeber early day 4g phones ran the antenna for both 3g and 4g at same time which ate the battery instead of shutting down the 3g antenna and putting it on standby while 4g is active.

      • Looks like they're just throwing mAh at it hoping to average it out.

  • Damn, if it had a wide angle camera I'd probably jump on this.

    • Exactly the same for me.

My list of requirements aren't too bad. No longer need a 3.5mm jack as I'll be going the USB OTG route.

      • Wide Angle
      • OIS on main camera
      • Wireless charging
      • Great battery
      • OLED
      • NFC
      • Aussie Stock
      • Snapdragon CPU (for GCam)

Really hoping the next Pixel has a wide angle camera, but I doubt it.

I currently own this phone and 18 months into a 2 year contract.

Functionally it's fine, decent phone but I wouldn't sign up again because it has a pretty big cosmetic flaw, "screen burn in".

Just Google "Note 8 screen burn" and do some pretty comprehensive research to determine if you think this deal is worth it.

It's not an issue that makes me want to throw it out immediately or makes me frustrated with the phone bit it's pretty noticeable on a white background.

I use Twitch app a lot and as I'm typing this I can see through my space bar "Say something in (Streamer Name)'s chat. I can also see many app outlines where they would be on the home screen.

Valid concerns, but the issue is with OLED displays in general, not the Note 8 specifically. If you Google "(any phone with an OLED display) burn in" you'll get a heap of results. There's a lot you can do to avoid burn in, but with some people's use cases it's inevitable over time.

    • I've had one for a similar period and there's no issue with my screen. The battery, on the other hand, is poor.

Just went in today to pick one up and wanted to create an account so i could come back and thank you.

I got a super amazing deal. Was on Optus paying $60 a month for 30gb with free calls and text on a prepaid plan. Got ported over to Telstra on a $65 prepaid plan with 60gb a month and free calls and text. For me doing so they took $400 off the phone in the form of a gift card leaving me only $299 left to pay. I'm still shocked and in awe.

Anyways, thank you again for this. I missed out when Target had them on clearance and decided I'd just wait for the note 9 to come down in price. I was still using my note 3 so you can imagine how incredibly happy i feel right now.

    • Thank you very much, I'm glad the post was able to help.

    • A great phone that does everything but at great expense to battery life. Make sure you carry a portable power cell with you if you're out for the day.
After 18 months, that's the only negative.

And keep hold of that S-Pen; I recently lost mine and replacements are expensive.

    • $780 per year for a mobile plan is a bit steep these days with so many competing offers, good thing they gave you $400 back.

    • Recommend that you now hop on to Telstra chat and "upgrade" to the $69 plan currently discounted to $59.
You should also ask for the the $10 port-in discount. If the rep declines to give you the port-in discount, try again later.
You should be able to get your monthly charge down to $49/mth.

Nice thing about the Telstra plan is that it includes "peace of mind", i.e. they will throttle your speed rather than charge extra if you go over the 60GB. AFAIK, the JB-HIFI plan does not include this.

  • I've had the phone for almost two years as well, before the one you update its battery life was pretty sub par. since android pie 9.0 with one UI it's dramatically improved. I've never had any screen burn in and have taken some of the best photos in my portfolio with the cameras. I have played months of pubg mobile on it as well when it came out and it handles very well. highly recommend.
