Epson Perfection V550 Photo & Film Scanner $339.96 @ Ted’s Camera eBay Store

POD15

Normal price is $399 - the 15% brings it down to the $339 mark. Not as good at the Harris Technology eBay deal recently, but I was too late for that one. Computer Alliance has the same scanner at 15% off but unless you live in Brisbane, add postage. I have seen it cheaper on one other site, but have never a heard of them, so will go for a known entity.

I am scanning old family negatives and photos and wanted something better than the old scanner I bought years ago. A lot of reading and YouTube has brought me to this one. The Plustek 8100 machine gets good write-ups but is only good for film.

For about the same price this will also do photos and documents (no feeder) and importantly has hardware based dust detection, which is really important for old negs we haven’t stored properly. A now discontinued Canon got better write-ups, but it’s gone.

Blurb:
Underpinning the Epson Perfection V550 Photo's high level of performance is its 6400dpi Matrix CCD (Charged Couple Device) and Micro Lens technology combination. The enormous advantage of the CCD and On–Chip Micro Lens combination is that it enables the Epson Perfection V550 Photo to be incredibly light sensitive. As a result, photograph and film scans exhibit superior levels of picture quality than would otherwise be achieved.
The Epson Perfection V550 Photo takes scanning to the next level with 12 lines of CCD with micro lenses compared with only 6 lines on previous models. This enables the Epson Perfection V550 Photo to produce better quality scans at faster speeds.

Adding even greater scanning resolution power is the scanner's ability to move the optical carriage at 9600dpi with Micro Step Drive — a feature that has consistently provided Epson Perfection scanner users with brilliantly clear images exhibiting high colour consistency.

  • I have a v700 that i bought when i went through a film obsessed phase - quite time consuming exercise. There's quite a few apps you can get if you want to preserve prints such as photoscan by google.

    • +1

It’s mainly the negs I want digitised so that probably won’t help

    • I have the V700 also but for X-rays. Great product.

(Stupid that the X-ray was digital and printed to physical and I have to scan it to digital. /Rant)

  • Anyone have any experience with how much this increases the quality when scanning old slides from the 60's? Currently using my Epson RX510 printer and it's taking forever and the scans aren't that great.

    • With proper film scanner I would expect better quality than printing / scanning.
I found my old slides are pretty grainy when I scanned them. But they still look good.
PM me if you need my opinion on the topic. :)

    • Yes, will be better than the RX510, but need to step-up to v600, v700 or v850 but they cost a lot and still won't be the same quality as a drum scanner.

      • Nikon Coolscan is pretty cool :)

I have had an Epson Perfection V700 Photo for many years. It is a fantastic scanner, I highly recommend it for slides and negatives.

  • I would recommend you consider the V600 or V700 over this, for the increased scan quality (same resolution though), but even these don't deliver professional results, need to go v850 or drum style.
These are decent scanners but the Epson software is pretty crap, and will crash for a variety of reasons. Need to run as an admin and in compatibility mode, and if the scanner errors for any reason (off, slides not detected), then the Epson software stops responding and needs to be restarted.

For slides you really need a glass insert as the negatives are never flat.

ICE is great if the slides are scratched but can take 20minutes for a slide, so you only use when you need to.
Plus, you can scan a strip of negatives in one go, and it saves each pic automatically to an individual file (saves a lot of time).

You can get 3rd party software, but I just use the Epson.

    • Each model step-up = $120-$150, so hard for me to justify with the family happy snaps.

I am looking at Silverfast for the 3rd party software - I gather it can be set-up for the film brand/version you are scanning so it handles the orange cast/background on the negatives better. Any experience with that?

I have found similar results with Epson Scan, VueScan, and SilverFast. SilverFast I found easiest to use.
If you have a specific issue addressed by SilverFast then sure, but the Epson Scan software produces the same results with no issues with orange cast background on the negatives. In Professional mode, you have a lot of control but it takes a lot of time.

Note: I have not tried SilverFast Ai "Studio", I hear the Studio version has a lot more auto features, but takes more time to scan.
Have to add it to my to-do list.

Just checked, 300 EURO!! for the Studio Edition, hell no, rather spend that on a scanner upgrade.
The higher end models include licences for Silverfast Plus which has more than enough features for home.

  • As an update - I bought and have received the scanner - and have just tried a few old negs.

In comparison with the old Kaiser Baas PhotoMaker I bought about 10 years ago (for maybe $100+) this is chalk and cheese.

Just using the Epson software - even on full auto the negs are transformed into something very close to the prints. On the "Professional Mode" you can fiddle around with it and use the hardware (ICE) dust removal, which does a very good job.

No it's not super-quick, but if you put two rows of 6 negs, you can walk away while it does its thing. It is over-estimating the time - it said 10 minutes for 7 negs - but it is about 4 or less. If you do the hardware dust removal it takes 5-10 per shot.

Anyone want an old PhotoMaker for $20 plus delivery??

    • Thanks for the review. Have you tried to do any slide scans?

      • No, but I suspect that will be easier because there is no colour conversion.
