Not really a bargain dingo when the item costs $3200

    • +3

Bargains are relative to RRP and equivalent alternatives imo.

Laser projector are a gimmick. JVC makes some of the best home theatre prosumer grade projectors around and none of their models are laser.

If all you care about is 4k and ignore all other aspects of picture quality then your the type of person that would be happy with a budget TV sold at ALDI.

    • +2

Laser is the lighting source of the projector. It uses laser to excitation fluorescent therefore no direct laser coming out.
The product is considered Class 1 Laser product in U.S.

    • +8

All of the professional grade projector companies are now not only offering laser projectors but in a majority of their offerings. Might help to pick a better brand thAn JVC as your reference.
Check out Barco, Christie digital and Panasonic for the industry leaders.
Also FYI almost all new cinemas utilise 4K laser projectors now.

      • -1

I mentioned prosumer which this Xiaomi is not. What your referencing are professional 3 chip projectors like the barco costing 80k+. You can't compare this projector to commercial cinema projectors.
A laser projector is only a light source. If your shining that light on a single "budget" DLP chip made by Texas instrument then your contrast, colour and overall picture quality go out the door. Even Texas instrument has a budget 4k DLP chip and a more professional larger version which are used in higher end projectors for better contrast. If this did not matter they would not bother.

The only advantage to laser in the Xiaomi is no lamp changes and not a great one. For comparison an Epson projector lamp costs $129 on average and lasts 3 years.

All I'm saying is that for this price there are better options out there of you look past the laser gimmick

Have you tried/tested this Xiaomi projector and you found it not good enough? What alternatives do you recommend?

        • +4

Can't say they are using the high end DLP chips. It is also true that this is a pixel shifting 4K like all others at similar budget.
Having said that, laser projector is considered to be one of the trends as brighter lumens and relatively good color coverage. And laser projector performs the same from the beginning to the last min of life cycle, unlike lamp.
FYI, the manufacturer behind Xiaomi is called Approtronics who claims to build over 60% of the cinema screens in China.
We are planning to have a trial leasing in Sydney. Feel free to try it first for a small fees over weekend.

          • @pilotyuan: Yes please count me in. I am keen to buy one but would like to try it in my house first. Please let me know details for the trial :)

            • @ccrap: Thanks,

So here is how I plan to do.

For the trail leasing, you would need to pay the full amount of $3200 for a used unit, cash on pick up in North Sydney.

If you decide you don't want it, get it back then we will only charge a leasing fees of $25/day and refund you the remaining.

If you like it, get it back to swap a brand new unit. We won't charge you a leasing fees (max 3 days)

Contact me via our website if you are interested.

              Cheers,
              Eric

              • @pilotyuan: What if we are serious buyer in Melbourne and wish to have demo for just clarity of picture n wheather it can be connected to home theatre system…
We are happy to pay for brand new item but before we need to check it
                Thanks in advance

                • @narenkul09: Hi @narenkul09

                  Thank you for asking.

Unfortunately we don't have trial leasing for other city yet as the return postage plus insurance are pretty high ($100+ for both ways).

Any questions feel free to contact me on our website.

                  Cheers,
                  Eric

            That would be amazing.
Keen to know how the fees will be..
TVs are one thing, but projectors are really quite rare to find in-store unless you go to a specialist store

          • @pilotyuan: Very interested with the trial leasing but alas, I live in Melbourne :-(

            • @burningrage: Sorry mate, our trial leasing is for Sydney only.

          • @pilotyuan: Interested to have a trial too

            • @GregFiona: Pls see my comment above

                As a deposit?

Pickup is North Sydney is fine

Okay, so minimum $25 sunk cost for one day rental up to three days, with $3200 deposit (goddamn it's like taking it out for a test drive)

                Not bad for serious buyers

              • @pilotyuan: Thanks OP, no offence but forking out $3200 in cash for a 2-hour test for a used unit sounds a bit too much!
Out of curiosity, what is your return policy? I couldn't find it on your site

                • @GregFiona: That $3200 is just a deposit. The leasing fees is $25/day.
We are not earning money from the leasing.
We are preparing the return policy, it pretty much return to as is condition.

                  • +1

                    @pilotyuan: I understand that, but when I hire audio/video
equipment(especially if it’s used) I never have to pay a deposit equal to the full price of the item.
                    Thanks for the information, anyway.

    • Yes jvc do make great projectors especially because their contrast ratios are better than most in the same price bracket, but they are kind of expensive.

The best bang for the buck for 4k with plenty of bells and whistles is the epson 5040ub, imo

Laser is definitely not a gimmick, it's the light source (in place of a lamp) and can last 20,000 hours or more among it's other benefits.

  • No HDR on this Xiaomi.

Worth waiting for the Vava 4k laser projector with HDR10. USD$2499.

    • +3

Just confirmed HDR 10 is supported.

Actually they are from the same manufacturer.

    • Doesn't ship to Oz?

    • +1

that Viva 4k is a xiaomi 4k OEM, it has the exact same specs and design and IO board if you compare both.

  • +1

Xiaomi CN is running a deal like 33% off the RRP = AUD $2100 (ends tonight) if you can understand Mandarin and manage to ship it here
    https://item.mi.com/product/9240.html

    • +1

At what the current rate, ¥10999 is around AUD $2400.

  • $2400 < $3200

    • +1

but then you need count in international postage, local warranty, GST.
Then there is not much a difference.

  • Pls count me in as I’m keen on the weekend trial for a small fee
