Jetstar Airways Damaged My Suitcase Handles - No Compensation

Hi,

Recently, I moved to interstate via Jetstar Airways. When I collected my suitcase, I found that suitcase handles are broken/damaged(see the picture, this is how I received it).

It was an expensive suitcase and came with 5/7 years warranty. Now, I cannot use it any more.

This is there response

When we accept your bags, we do so on the understanding that they are equipped to handle usual transportation, including being loaded on and off conveyor belts & between aircrafts. We're not able to cover you for attachments like handles/zips/wheels which are susceptible to damage during normal baggage handling processes.

We have assessed your claim in line with all relevant laws and conventions and while I appreciate how unhappy you are with this outcome, our position remains the same and your case will now be closed.

They cannot just damage other's suitcase and get away with this.

I was wondering, is there any thing I can do to get a compensation rather than going to court.

No. It’s pretty clearly stated that things sometimes get damaged. Perhaps you could claim on your travel insurance but depending on your excess this might not be worthwhile. And it might not be the kind of thing your insurance covers.

Was it new? Would this be covered under warranty? Forward the email that you received from Jetstar to the manufacturer and see what their response is.

Why not drill a couple of holes and jig a replacement up - a rope handle would do the trick.

    • Love how you put the SR number in the format 1-XXXXXXXXXXXX. Seems like you have experienced with a call centre running Siebel :p.

  • They cannot just damage other's suitcase and get away with this.

Unless you can prove it was intentional damage, then no, nothing you can do beyond claim from your insurance. It happens.

Do you've images of the undamaged items before they were checked in?

I do not have. However, if they check security footage, they can certainly see the handles.

Airport security recordings shouldn't be accessible by the public without an court order.

        • +5

Didnt you know that this is the exact use of airport security cameras… to check on passengers luggage handles…

          • +1

@pegaxs: "hey jerry, stop searching passengers for explosives and check the recorded footage to see if this valued client had the handles on his suitcase"

Unfortunately the most likely things to be broken (handles and wheels) are not covered under most airlines' baggage damage policy. My parents just returned from an overseas trip with a brand new Antler case which came back home with a broken handle. Managed to get the store we purchased from to get it repaired free of charge.

buy a new handle from aliexpress for ~$5 delivered

    • I would’ve never guessed

    rather than going to court…

Hahahaha… Please take them to court. Please.

    • smart!
I meant, I do not want to take them to court. It will be more costly for me. I & they know that.

But, but, but… what if you win?

You have all that airport surveillance footage you could use. And if you win, which there is no doubt, you will be awarded costs as well… So it shouldn’t cost you a cent.

        • but but, what if I do not win. please no more smart comment. I could not take it any more. I know you are smatter than me.

          • +1

@mafot: Well, it’s clear from the surveilance footage that you’re in the better position to bring forward legal action. It would be an “open and shut case

            • @pegaxs: a win is in the bag

              • @altomic: The lawyers would just need to get a grip of the situation and tear off some Jetstar arse.

It would be an interesting case

Let's just hope OP doesn't lay all his baggage on the judge

I don’t know if I could handle the anticipation.

  • How recent is "Recently"?
Did you happen to see this post and thought "Hmm I could use $70 now"?

  • Jetstar definitely didn't handle the situation correctly. Hold on to your e-tickets and try claim through your travel insurance.

    • No pun intended?

      • pun intended

  • I'd be contacting the ABC to pitch this saga as the basis of a new mini-series. First, there was The Slap, and now we have The Handle. Alex Dimitriades will play the role of baggage handler. Melissa George will play the role of mafot. Eagle-eyed viewers will be able to spot JV making a cameo appearance. Scab will have a minor role as a detained traveller attempting to smuggle in humour.

    • Nice idea. why not?!
But, can I chose the cast!

  • Well, you could contact today tonight or ACA.

Personally, I'd go to the suitcase manufacturer and claim on the warranty for the bag.

It was an expensive suitcase and came with 5/7 years warranty. Now, I cannot use it anymore.

What so, you can't wheel it? and there is no side handle? While annoying it is still usable.

  • You can probably still use it if rest is decent. Maybe a suitcase strap could double as a handle to grab it on and off the conveyor etc?

  • It seems nothing can be done :( Mod please close this thread.

  • You should definitely go to court and sue them for $1 million because of the emotional distress and mental health being affected + them damaging your bags

Goodness sake… New members these days :(
