Does this have thunderbolt 3, a deal breaker

    • Unfortunately not this one I'm afraid! It does have the USB-C 3.1 port, but not a Thunderbolt 3 compatible one.

what can I say about this one. Maintenance is hard! MSI kind of likes to do that for some reason. Whole mothrboard needs to be disconnected and removed to gain access to storage and RAM. Questionable design decision. Also white backlight.. on white keys.. if you haven't tried using that combination, it's not very convenient, you will have to switch the backlight on and off all the time, because you will run into situations when backlight makes keyboard unreadable.

Also the screen is rather dim at ~240nit, making it hardly suitable for "creators". Design and weight is cool, though. However I won't expect to pay this much for a system with so outdated video card.

Systems better suitable for "creators", like real mobile workstations with higher grade components (well, with a bit of drop in gaming performance) can be had cheaper than this. Think HP ZBook 15V, think Dell Precision 3530.

So if you are looking for a serious looking slightly outdated gaming machine, yes, this MSI is cool if you are fine with maintenance that involves tearing the whole thing apart just to install RAM or SSD. But not at this price, I would say.

    • Thanks for the detailed review! It looks pretty slick though right?

it does, but build quality.. let's just say that if I was fine with gtx 1060, I would go for this instead

Dell refurbished is indistinguishable from new, and Alienware m15 is one fine machine, $400 cheaper than this MSI. screen is not 144Hz, but hey, I would rather have a 60Hz 300nit screen, beats 240nit any day IMO. And that's a better price for this sort of hardware combination, still expensive if you ask me, but I am just giving an alternative that's cheaper and as slick (maybe even slicker).

I wouldn't buy it now, though. I would wait till another 15-20% off on Dell Outlet, and it's bound to come closer to EOFY. It's about time these units get a much better price.

  • Reminds me of the surface book design

I bought the little sister of this laptop (PS42 8RC, 1050 MaxQ, $1700) a week ago. I was debating between this (P65 @$2200) and the PS42 but ultimately went with more portability (PS42 is just 1.2kg, less than my X1 Carbon).

Maintenance is indeed PITA - MSI must hate tinkerers. I upgraded the NVMe in my laptop and had to take out the motherboard, however it's not difficult at all if you have any degree of technical finesse - took me ~15 mins and I took my sweet time.

I also agree with the complaints about the white backlight on white keys - I have to turn off the backlight during the day. Personally I would be happier with no backlight and just black fonts…

I had a test run with the black version of this laptop (GS65 Stealth, 144Hz) and I loved the screen. I would not call the P65 a Creator Edition as it's just the white version of a gaming laptop and as such the screen is not perfect for using it as the main work environment for visual work. I guess the marketing department thought otherwise.

Having said that, the colours popped, it was sharp, it was much nicer (brightness included) than the screens on the nearby laptops (HP Omen, ASUS ROG etc). I know that Notebookcheck is giving it a low grade but as a designer, I could live with the MSI screen - if I work on important stuff, I would hook it up to a proper quality IPS screen anyway. I had Dells (Inspiron, Latitude, Alienware) and Lenovos and they all had strengths and weaknesses regarding colour space, brightness or sharpness.

I don't really have any issues with the build quality either - my current $2500 14" Dell Latitude work laptop feels pretty much the same (the X1 Carbon feels sturdier than either of them, I must admit).

If this sale was a week earlier, I might have gone for this. I love the look, feel and specs but that's my subjective opinion :)

    • $2500 Dell Latitude - which model do you mean?

      • 7490 with i7.
