Virgin Points + Pay

If I have a flight that is 49000 velocity points or 27800 points + $126.78 to do points + pay, isn't doing that actually a pretty good deal? You're saving 21,200 points for only paying $126. I'm not sure why they have priced it in this way.

  • Yes it is.

  • +1

49000 VFF can be sold for $490 cash
    27800 VFF can be sold for $278 cash + $126.78 cash = $404.78

So yes in isolation, it is a better deal.

However, how much is the same flight if you pay all cash? Less than $404.78?

      $487 with cash.

Then you're correct, 27800 VFF + $126.78 cash is the best deal 😊

  • Depends on what you value velocity points at. Using the general valuation of 1c per point, yes paying the taxes in cash is clearly a better proposition.

  • Essentially you are buying points for .6c each. I would say pay the money

  • You're actually looking at it the wrong way around!

The 'set price' for your route is 27,800 points, and the taxes are $126.78

However, they are also offering an option where you can pay for the taxes with even more points, which is generally considered bad value.

They put that higher price more prominently, probably to extract a bit more revenue from members who are redeeming points.

    • Thanks, interesting insight.

FYI - best value is use points to goto cocos keeling islands or xmas islands an otherwise insanely priced place to visit.
if that is something on your bucketl list

    • Thanks snakey! I've never thought of that. I've always wanted to go to Lord Howe Island with Qantas but it's too expensive. But it's actually 24000 QFF points return for a Classic Reward seat.
