[eBay Plus - Make Offer] DJI Osmo Pocket (4K/60fps Camera/Gimbal) $476 Delivered (RRP $599) @ D1 eBay

170
PHOENIX

Hi all - This is a special for ozBargainers :-)

About the deal:

Last night D1 eBay store accepted an offer for $560 for the DJI Osmo Pocket - which makes this unit a great price with the current promotion.

I reached out to D1 this morning and they agreed I could pass on this offer to OzBargain…
So it is kind of an exclusive offer to our enlightened community ;-)

Important: Click on "Make Offer" then enter $560 and "OzBargain referral" in your comment.

With eBay plus, it comes down to $476 delivered (without eBay Plus it is $504 which is still a bargain)

About the product:

I saw this for the first time at the Melbourne D1 store while on holidays - amazing bit of kit! (and amazing shop - they have the best toys for grown ups)

Basically this is a combined very high quality miniature camera (as is expected on DJI equipment) combined with a miniature 3 axis mechanical gimbal of also very high quality (again… as is expected of DJI equipment). The smallest camera/gimbal combination out there at the moment.

To get some idea of what this thing is and does, have a look at YouTube videos - it is a must have for those interested in taking videos.

Here is the link to the DJI page with more info

Here are some of the many reviews on YouTube:
* A good summary
* Creating timelapses
* Showing more creative use
* Finally… Casey Neistat comparing stabilisation to GoPro … though note: this is not an action cam

It is not a perfect product, by all means, but the best there is (as far as a 'pocket' gimbal). Some of the criticisms:
* First generation product, sure to be updated (true - but this is quite good now and don't need to wait)
* Does not have a removable battery (true - but it lasts a couple of hours plus can be powered with battery pack)
* Lens angle is not wide (true - 71 degrees - but footage looks amazing. There are wide angle lens clip ons for about $20)
* Needs filters (yes and no - if want 'cinematic' look, filters can be used to slow down shutter to 2x frame rate)
* Microphone is not great (yes and no - it is good, but faces you so good for vlog, not so good for crowds; can get external mic)

Other accessories:

While I was there I also bought the following accessories (after lots of research I felt these are very worth while and great value at the moment):

    • does it work?

    This reads like an ad

      Sorry if it sounds like an ad :-)

      Wasn’t intentional - but I’m quite excited about getting and sharing what I found

  • In that video review, Casey Neistat calls himself an "amateur creator", which indicates that he's just saying anything rather than using words that accurately describe the product. Take that review with a grain of salt.

  • Casey Neistat comparing stabilisation to GoPro

    I mean obviously a gimbal will provide better stabilisation than GoPro's inbody stabilisation.

  • Does anyone have any actual experience with this vs the GoPro Hero 7 Black?

    • +1

      I have both. Osmo pocket has better stabilisation overall, especially in low light where the GoPro’s hypersmooth electronic image stabilisation falls down a little as it needs more light. In saying that, my GoPro 7 is waterproof and much more robust. So the 2 cameras are very different, depends how you’d use it.

  • DJI is gonna release the Osmo Action in a couple of days….worth waiting for that…

  • Just my two cents on this, I bought this from the DJI website and just refunded it.
    I have a Pixel 3XL and DJI have advertised this device will connect to my android phone via wifi, bluetooth and usb and from these only usb worked. As such i wanted this for the wireless connectivity and so decided to return it.

    • That was bad advertising on DJI's part.

      Just to clarify… the device has a USB-C socket, so can connect to a phone via a cable.
      The Pixel 3XL does work in that configuration (according to someone that uses it).

      The expansion kit (sold separately as per above) has the Bluetooth attachment.

      Having said that, one of the attractions of this device is that it can be used without a phone (has small screen to frame the shot).
      But you'd want a phone for things like the time lapse functionality.

      • I had the expansion kit and it still did not work with Bluetooth. So be careful and maybe test the connectivity or confirm it works before you buy.

        Support was not able to resolve it and instead wanted me to utilise my warranty claim so along came PayPal resolution time and I got my funds back.

  • Now we have the Osmo Action, do people still think this is worth getting for vlogging?

    • In my opinion, it depends on the kind of vlogging you are likely to do.

      The Pocket is good for being able to automatically flip the camera to face you / away from you at the push of a button.
      It is also good that it can be set to physically move to follow your face.

      The Action is good because it is a proper action cam (so can take the rough / water treatment), plus can be used for selfies videos.
      It is finickier to take the selfies (move camera around to face you) but the front screen lets you frame the shot.

      If vlog is for fast/FPV motion related activities there would be no need to have two cameras - the Action would do both jobs.
      And if vlogging for other types of videos like travel, events etc where it is more important to keep shots smooth/steady (FPV not important), then you would just take the Pocket.

    • As the Osmo Action has just been released, the review videos are coming now out.

      This is a good review and comparison with GoPro, and small comparison Pocket

      The Osmo Action looks/performs amazingly well
