I've been looking for hotel accommodation in Hawaii for 1 night on a stopover to Canada in July. All the hotels I have been looking at charge a Resort Fee.Can any Oz Bargainers recommend a hotel for a retired couple that don't charge this fee? We will also be returning to Hawaii at the end of July for a further 2 nights. Suggestions appreciation.

Definitely not a government charge. Resort fees (the fee on top of taxes and government charges) were invented by the hotel industry to create a lower (base) room rate. Great for search engines. I’ve first encountered it in Las Vegas.
OP: resort fees are standard, there’s no escaping it, accept them. Otherwise you just make it really complicated for yourself and you might miss out on some great hotels! Use a hotel search site that shows you the full cost per hotel, incl all charges. Believe booking.com and hotels.com and possibly Expedia do this.
Sorry I meant standard charge hotels collectively add… you're right not a govt charge per se
Air bnb?
This
Do a bit of searching here:
http://www.resortfeechecker.com/Its annoying because in the past, they did not inform you about the resort fee until you arrive at check-in which could add hundreds of dollars to the cost.
My suggestion is to look at total cost. If you exclude the resort fee hotels, then you're left with a sub standard set.
Resort fees are a way for the hotel to make money on top of what they have to give to 3rd party booking sites, i.e. they keep 100% of that instead of giving them a percentage
air BNB
Embassy suites by Hilton Waikiki Beach Walk - two room suites
No resort fees, includes free wifi, breakfast and complimentary alcoholic drinks for 2 hours each night.https://embassysuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/hawaii/embassy-s…
i think VRBO is popular in hawaii, try that if airbnb doesnt work
This is a government charge so applies to all accomodations… so short answer is no
