Australia Post - 500gm and 3kg Cheapest Rates Ever Just Released!

1240

So eBay have teamed up with Australia Post (about time) to offer the cheapest shipping rates for 500gm and 3kg satchels. They are somewhat different to prepaid regular satchels, in that you buy the satchel and use the 'Click and Send' service to organise shipping.

500gm satchel as low as $.15 + $5.50 deliver = $5.75 delivered with tracking (compared with $6.30 regular prepaid satchel + $1.50 tracking)

3kg satchel as low as $.21 + $9.35 = $9.56 delivered with tracking (compared with $10.70 + $1.50 tracking).

Ends up cheaper then some eParcel rates too!

Nice… they had something similar a while back, but sold out incredibly quickly!

    • +1

I think (and hoping) this will be permanent now. Its a great alternative to those who can't get eParcel (its actually even cheaper then some eParcel rates). A pack of 20 being the highest level to get cheap rates is great also.

    • Yeah they did

      really good

      Click and Send

      but sold out incredibly quickly!

yeah, it was on and off

  • It's not that a good deal since Express post rates are similar (Pack Of 10 3kg Express Post Satchel RRP $114.00 or $12.00 Each - you can purchase them off ebay for as low as $10.75 each delivered) and have a guaranteed next day delivery. However if you don't need next day delivery, then the deal listed sounds good!

    • +7

The key difference here is tracking online. Express post does not offer an acceptable form of tracking (it just gives mail centre updates). Paypal doesn't accept Express post tracking when it comes to disputes, which will cost you in the long run.

If you want to compare, you need to compare this price to registered post, or regular post with the $1.50 tracking option.

      • +6

Thanks, that explains it well. Hope they offer an express post version too - that would be handy also.

        • +1

          Pardon?

        • +1

I could hear the echo from my four walls

        • Could you repeat that?

        • I withdraw my statement.

        • I must have sobered up now, as I was previously seeing quadripple

      • hi

Actually I have used the ebay satchel. The tracking is on par with express post and not as good as registered post tracking you are talking about, which is scanned at the counter at the point of lodgement. The ebay satchels are lodged in box or over the counter, never scanned. They scan it once when it turns up at the destination post office

        • +1

Like mentioned before Express Post is not accepted by Paypal in disputes. Click and Send is. So doesn't really matter if it's not as detailed as Registered post still. The main difference is that it can be used for Paypal disputes.

        • I have looked into the terms and conditions from Paypal.. I dont think its has been made very clear, since the satchels are lodged without any form of proof, I would not bet 100% about it being covered by paypal which can be terrible dodgy when you get into a dispute especially when you are the seller.

The only sure form of evidence to protect yourself is to get signature on delivery.

        • +4

          Agreed on Paypal being dodgy!

        • I'm pretty sure Express Post is covered by Paypal as long as you get proof of postage.

        • I'm pretty sure Express Post is covered by Paypal as long as you get proof of postage.

          No it is not.

There is no proof of postage with express post. You need to use express post platinum to get proof of postage and express post.

      • what about express post platinum? signature on delivery and online tracking standard

        • But then you are paying another big premium for platinum. not feasible to most sellers or buyers

      • I've had paypal refuse registered post tracking as well as I could not prove I lodged the specific item with that specific registered post tracking number. Also, registered post tracking only records/updates when the receiving post office gets the parcel, so if it's lost before that then there is practically no tracking info - hence I now use Paymate as they have always been more reasonable towards the sellers efforts (it's also an Australian company) In my many years/non delivery disputes with paypal they have always shown a major tendency to side with the buyer, which I find detrimental as it's the sellers offering paypal in the first place that earns them their revenue. Well no more for them from me.

  • Good news, this should benefit buyers too if sellers adopt them.

  • My question still unanswered, how DealExtreme(Hongkong) can sell $2 with free shipping to Australia. When the item arrived in Australia, Australian Post must deliver the item. Anyone know how the system works? Or do they have some kind of agremeent between countries, like whatever arrive in your country you must deliver it for free??

    Thanks, please enlightent me.

    • +3

Aust Post and HK Post have mutual agreements. They deliver items for each other. Not sure whether they track how many normal post items delivered and compensate the party who delivered more items.

For international express post / EMS, perhaps the postage is shared between the two parties - since you can track them.

I don't know why though, but items from Japan (even without express) are delivered the quickest, followed by US / UK items. HK items are unpreditable.. but generally quite slow to get delivered. Japan, US and UK postage tend to cost more (for the sender).

    • That's a different topic, but the international postal agreement is that when a country's mail service receives untracked mail from overseas, it delivers it. I'll leave it up to you to ponder how Auspost recovers the cost. Probably by charging for outgoing mail.

For tracked mail, there is probably some cost sharing going on.

    • Thanks for the information.

    • DealExtreme uses HK Post and HK post has some of the words lowest rates (right after Switzerland, hence so many books/packages are actually directed through Euro). Also, DealExtreme, like other large HK retailers have subsidized postage rates where they can actually send goods cheaper then the regular price. Recent article in the papers about how aussie retailers have started to hold stock overseas to make use of these subsidized rates.

This is not new. They were available last year.

Good idea, but the satchels, you cannot write on them easily (not real place to write the destination address - due to all those colourful pictures and how to use the system on the satchel itself). So to use it, you will need to put a label in front of the satchel and make sure it does not come off.

I have not used them since I received them from Aust Post last year. I still tend to use the standard Aust Post satchels / padded bags.

By the way, they were free last year… Now, they are 25-35 cents each (still good value).

    • +3

You are not suppose to write on the satchel.
At the back of the satchel, (ie. the non-colourful side),
you will see a orange line running vertically down.
      That is a pouch.
You are suppose to pay online, then print out the address label, and insert it into that transparent pouch.
Then remove the orange strip to seal the address label.

I actually thought it was pretty obvious.

(ie. Pay online & type out recipient's address, insert recipient's address and postage into the pouch. Simple as that.)

      • Thanks for the info. Last time I tried to figure out how to use it, I got to the bit which says pay online - I think it wanted my credit card number? Then, I just stopped.

I still haven't opened the two packs I received from Aust Post.

      • It took me a few times to realise there was a puch on the back, before that I was taping the labels to the front. Its not that obvious and I don't think its written anywhere

        • It's in the step by step innstructions given by eBay/Click and Send

        • I think it actually mentions it after you have printed the label.

    • As bsmksg said, you're suppose to use Click & Send with the satchels and not write on them?

  • +1

Oh… they were still free last week.
They should make these available at post offices so we can pick them up for free.

Can we use them to post stuff other than stuff sold on eBay?

    • Yes you can.

  • +1

    It was free last week.
    Now they are selling.

  • Not sure if any satchel bags will replace my makeshift plastic bag, newspaper and bubblewrap packaging, but the 3kg bags may be good value… good for tracking.

  • Hmmm…

Do these come with any padding (bubble wrap)? I'm going to say no, but I thought I'd check.

    • You guessed right - they don't come with padding, just a thin (but pretty tough) plastic envelope. You need to purchase your own bubble wrap.

  • Does 'click and send' shipping service qualify for paypal seller protection?

    • Yep sure does.

  • Does anyone know if you have to visit the post-office to get the "Signature on delivery" option if you use these satchels?

I remember someone saying on the eBay forums that there can be issues if an ebay buyer were to start an 'item not received' dispute with paypal because apparently items sent this way don't qualify for paypal protection if you simply drop the package in one of those red post boxes and pay the bill online which kinda defeats the purpose of this.

    • If you use the Click and Send service as is intended for these bags, you will be protected with the accepted form of tracking.

      • "Proof of shipment for the satchel dropped in Australia Post street posting boxes only applies where Australia Post can provide validation of delivery."

Does this mean that even if you use their "Click and Send" and post it in a Posting box, but Aust Post loses it, then effectively, your "Proof of Shipment" is not validated as it wasn't delivered???

I just want to double check as i've been using Plat Express Post as i have a definite proof of shipment when i lodge it and the PO stamps my receipt

          Yes that is right.

As the package can not be insured then Australia post will only compensate you $50 if it is lost (Or $100 if you added signature on delivery)

    • You don't even need to go to the post office.

If you need "Signature on delivery",
      just pay $5.50 + $1 = $6.50 online at auspost website.
Print out the "label", insert it into the satchel's outer pouch.

And drop it into any auspost postbox or hand it over at the post office.
(Yes, you read right, you can drop it in the postbox)

    • Shouldn't payment be confirmation of delivery? Considering it will be given the tracking number when it's paid for and then that tracking number can be used to track the item and make sure that the parcel is sent. If PayPal does not accept that then they're being an !@#$.

  • nice nice nice!

  • hi all,

Actually I have used the ebay satchels. The tracking is on par with express post but not as good as registered post tracking with signature, which is scanned at the counter at the point of lodgement. Also you can't add extra insurance like you do with registered post.

The ebay satchels are lodged in box or over the counter, never scanned. They only scan it once when it turns up at the destination post office.

Still a good cheap option for sending items for the price of normal regular post and to add signature option only costs $1 extra - i suggest adding this if you want to get full paypal protection to avoid any buyer/seller problems

  • I have used this service and it is really good.
Only issue I had was the generating of the labels via pdf. It would not print for some reason, so just saved the pdf, re-opened and then they would print ok.
Highly recommend this service - you get the satchels delivered to your door for free, print the label and drop it in the red box. Easy!

    • Satchels used to be free. (I think all of us got it for free).
Now they do charge for them, unfortunately.

      • They where free until last night, i was lucky enough to order 5 of each last night while still free

  • OK, what happens if I buy 10 satchels, and they cancel the clickandsend site?

    • +2

      you loose $2

    • invert the bags! ;)

  • this was free for the last 6 months! How is this a bargain?!

    • +1

That was a special promo. Now this is the permanent offering. If you dont think its a bargain then find postage options cheaper then this?

  • +2

These were good when they were free, now there is less of a reason to use them.

If i knew that they were going to charge for the satchel i would have kept ordering a pack each week.

    • +1

      Me too.

I've used these for a while now. They don't really save much time to be honest compared to simply writing on a satchel and once you factor in the printing costs I don't think the savings are that great, especially now they are charging for the satchel too.

Therefore I don't really rate this post as a bargain. A neutral from me.

    • +1

they did say that the promo was going to run until 30 April. so every week i made an effort to remember to order my 10 bags :)

Last page has a picture of the label, why in the hell do they need so much use of coloured or dark grey backgrounds, pretty dumb as it serves no useful purpose and just wastes ink/toner :S

Also if you are using this points to note are that it would be recommended handing this in over a counter and adding the signature on delivery, so in effect this is actually $1 dearer than the prices stated in the OP. Also pretty dumb that you cant just pick the satchels up for free or whatever from the post office…

    • If you picked up cheap toner and paper from the Staples offer, then this should be of no concern :P

Although Staples had sold out of Magenta for my printer so i'll be printing in "Grey Scale" if they allow it

      • so i'll be printing in "Grey Scale" if they allow it

I think they do. I always change the print setting to the lowest quality to save ink and have never had a problem.

    • There is no point handing over the counter, since Post Office staff have been instructed NOT to scan the satchels at lodgement. They are specifically designed to be dropped in the postbox (you can also hand over counter if you want).

I guess you can pay the extra $1 for signature if you wish to spend money and annoy your buyer, but there is no increase in your protection level under Paypal Seller Protection.

But if you ARE going to compare prices, at least be fair about it…

      500g Red Satchel + Registration (sign on del) $6.30 + $2.95 = $9.25
      vs
      500g Ebay Satchel + signature on delivery $5.50 + $1.00 = $6.50

      • That's interesting. At my Post Office (2650 Wagga Wagga) - the staff ALWAYS scan these eBay parcels for me on lodgement. Once I get home, I see the item has appeared in the Click and Send system which means I, and the buyer, can track where the item is.

    • Step 14 of your link shows the labels. I have used these and the labels are actually mostly white background - just a bit of red around the Australia post label is all. And they print off to about 1/2 A4 size meaning you can print 2 labels to a sheet.

  • +6

    cheapest rates ever just released!

Actually, the rates are now more expensive

The postage prices have not changed BUT you do need to pay for the satchel so basically the prices have gone up.

    • +2

Exactly - this is actually a price increase from what has been available for about the last six months.

  • +1

I use these parcels very often and they're fantastic for convenience as you don't need a trip to the post office! However I have had many problems with printing the PDF labels - at least 30% of the time the file comes up blank on my screen and I cannot even right click to save the file, so the only solution is to call Click and Send customer service to email you a copy of the address label (and you can only call them during office hours, so if you're trying to get something sent off at night you're out of luck)… but other than this problem it's a great deal!

    • I've been having that printing problem too - Are you using Firefox 4 and the latest Acrobat Reader 10.0.3? I had no problems before both of those were updated a month or so back.

      • try the foxit pdf reader plugin, it's more stable than adobe

      • Try turning off "Protected Mode" in Preferences -> General. Not sure if it will fix your problem, but I have seen this new option introduced in Acrobat X cause problems.

  • +1

    I'm confused….

Damn ebay..always causing problems to my wallet

  • I have a question - you pay postage online, but what if you don't physically post the satchel??
A seller may have paid for postage but not have posted the item over the counter or at a post box??
And paypal accepts it during a dispute… i see a loophole??

    • You need to read the terms and conditions

Proof of shipment for the satchel dropped in Australia Post street posting boxes only applies where Australia Post can provide validation of delivery.

      • ohh thanks!

      • Hence if Aus Post lose the parcel you are left with no money from PayPal and no insurance money to collect, registered post is still far superior.

        • Not exactly.

ANY item sent with Australia post (Letters, parcels and express post) automatically has compensation of $50 if it is

Registered post and express post platinum come with compensation of $100 unless you purchase more insurance.

          For these ebay satchels.
If you do not have signature on delivery you can claim $50 in compensation
If you select signature on delivery you can claim $100 in compensation
But you can not purchase more compensation on the ebay satchels.

        • Only problem is how are you going to prove that the parcel has gone missing if there's no proof of delivery or it being lost?
(I'm talking about that $50 compensation)

        • Only problem is how are you going to prove that the parcel has gone missing if there's no proof of delivery or it being lost?

I do not know as i have never had to make a claim.

I guess both you and the person who was supposed to receive the package would need to provide Australia post with some type of statement saying that the package was never delivered.

For you to get any compensation i know that you need to have kept the receipt.

  • Are you sure this eBay vendor AustPostStore is legit?

I mean, it's good that they have 100% Positive feedback,
but… only 10 sale (when we last looked…)

It pays to be careful about buying online…

PS Just kidding, folks… Nothing to see here… Move on. ;-)

  • OK, so I'm taking a chance on AustPostStore, now…
we tend to use BOTH sizes (500 g & 3 Kg) of satchel

    BUT…

    Since they require IMMEDIATE payment…

    1. After ordering some 500 g satchels,
    2. I must log into PayPal (first time) & pay for them
    3. A second later, we order some 3 Kg satches…

    Since they require IMMEDIATE payment…

    1. After ordering some 3 Kg satchels,
    2. I must log into PayPal (a SECOND time) & pay for them

If there's no way to buy twice, then pay ONCE,

then I'd say AustPostStore haven't thought this through.

Or… we must be missing something here… What? :-/

    • Not the greatest for multi purchases but its so that people dont buy an item and never pay for it.

  • Is there any way to check previous consignments that I sent on the clickandsend website? ie. If I want to check a consignment I printed last week, can I view a list of previous manifests?

    • Yes you can. When you first login, choose "Archives" from the top menu and then enter in a date range and you can see all the items you've sent during that period. I just tried it and it worked well.

      • Thanks for the reply, but I can't get it to work. I click on "Archives", then enter todays date (I have also tried making it a 1 year period including today) but it comes up with No Archived Items.

I just started using it today. Can you see items you sent today? I will try again tomorrow in case there is a delay for it to show up.

        • I guess it takes a day or 2 for things to show. I made it a 6 month period including today but there was nothing for today for me either, and I sent a couple this morning.
