What Is Better, a Lexus or Toyota SUV?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a SUV AWD, and in terms of depreciation and all what do you recommend?

Looking at the Toyota Rav4 2017 AWD GX cost about 23k, Toyota Kluger 2017 AWD cost about 33k, Lexus NX 2014-16 cost about 35 to 40K, Lexus RX 450h or 350 cost about 55 to 65K

We already own Toyota and Lexus hatches and sedans. Lexus is more the higher end with elegance and prestige, but reliable unlike European cars.

Or should I wait for the new Toyota Rav4 2019 or the new Toyota Kluger 2019? Will the prices of the new one be reasonable?

…like both in terms of taste.

Not sure if you realise you're not meant to be eating them.

    • LOL!

    ‘but reliable unlike European cars.’

I’ve never had an issue with the German cars I’ve owned.

That's an inclusion to make the buyer feel better about their decision.

      Self justification.

        you got lucky

As ever, it depends upon what you value. If you've owned both Toyota and Lexus previously, then you'll be aware that the overall standard of finish in the Lexus is materially higher, not to mention simply providing a more prestige overall experience.

Again, depending on what the use of this vehicle will be, there is the obvious material difference between the NX/RAV and the LX/Kluger. I've not driven the RAV, but have owned all the others. The NX/RAV is obviously designed as a more "compact" vehicle. It doesn't make an enormous difference in the front seats, but you lose out in rear leg room and boot space vs. the RX/Kluger.

I always enjoyed the RX. For me (which is obviously then a matter of personal taste and requirements), this is a very good "upper middle" family SUV. The Kluger gives you probably about the same overall functionality, but will be of a lesser finish quality with lower quality appointments. What you value is of course up to you.

Very grateful for your response, that is the thing Lexus has finer finishes and that is something I like. Toyota will generally be cheaper when it comes to maintenance and cost to buy. Lexus, I always get mine serviced at Lexus for piece of mind and quality services done with them, but it is dear in terms of cost average from $550 to $1500 in terms of minor and major services. I find that driving a Lexus is more smooth and drives the same time after time. Toyota tends to not be as comfortable, but is reliable like Lexus.

      • Yep, that's about my summary as well. So long as you done mind the Toyota finishes/appointments, you'll get the same job done as a Lexus at a lower price point.

That said, if you want to get something at the Lexus price point, I think the Lexus gives you good bang for your buck.

New RAV4 will be similar price to current models (Educated guess, will find out on Wednesday), so expect $35-$52k or so drive away.

New Kluger won't be seen for 6 months after it comes out in the states. Easily well into 2020 before we see it.

New RAV4 shits all over the 2017

    • New LC. You'll give me a good deal right?

For you, $100 discount off RRP and free mats.

        • You do know how to spoil a gal. Blush.

    • Seems like a bit long of a wait. Paying the price of a secondhand Lexus for the Rav4. But Lexus drives more smoother though.. Soo hard to choose..

I once chatted to a Toyota mechanic and his take was that Toyota's reliability comes from all their new tech getting pushed into Lexus first. By the time it gets into Toyota it has all the bugs ironed out.

  • Must it be AWD? If so for what purpose?
I have been driving a 2wd Kluger for the past 7 years and only difference I have noticed over AWD is the lower purchase price, much lower fuel consumption (actually amazing for the power and size of the vehicle), lower servicing cost. Handles very well as long as you dont have crap tyres on it.
"Toyota Kluger 2017 AWD cost about 33k,"
Recently they were discounting new 2018 to $40K drive away. Extra $7k seems a good deal considering new over used…
Used you will have to pay transfer fee…
You usually do not get a full year rego & ctp with used..
Used have worn consumables like brakes, battery, tyres, etc…
New can come with discounted servicing for a few years…
You never can tell how a used car has been abused or used…
From a dealership used toyotas are premium priced and depreciate like a new car ..

If you have ever driven a Kluger you would not be mentioning a Rav4. They are very underpowered and with the weight of AWD added, even more so.

    • much lower fuel consumption

Have you driven a Kluger AWD of the same year as a comparison?

Lexus is a brand for the elderly and infirm.

  • Posting in hope some IS300H owners will share their experiences. I am looking at buying a 5 year old used 60k mileage car. I have never owned Lexus Hybrid before. Need advice - is it ok to purchase a 5 year old car with full service history, hybrid battery replacement cost that I should budget for, I am not into a performance car so from that angle is it an ok city commute car and what happens if I don’t replace the hybrid battery. Apologies upfront if I am using wrong terminologies or showing lack of knowledge in this

    • It's really no different to a Toyota hybrid.

Battery replacement cost is around $3500, but the battery should last minimum 8yrs, if not 10+

With a FSH, and given the luxury nature (ie it would've been driven pretty normally), I'd say go for it provided it passed an inspection :)

      • Thanks Spacebace - have read numerous valuable posts from you over the years and thank you for your comments on my queries. Just a few more queries - the car is being sold by a Lexus dealer and is there a way that they can assess the battery life? If the battery fails does the car come to a stop or runs on petrol only?
