  • The lack of interest might be a reflection of the product (bland, boring and unremarkable) but equally likely it might be an undiscovered gem. We simply couldn't tell at this moment.

    • Correct you can get better sounding stuff for less https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/452977

    • Thanks for your comment. I was thinking the same thing.. a possible gem.
But since there is so little info available it really is a gamble.

This subwoofer in the Asian-market is sold / paired together with Pioneer’s Andrew Jones series surround speakers.
I saw a product photo with the Floorstanders, bookshelfs, centre and this sub.
Still leaves us with very little to go on.

      • You mean this FS52 package? There are two packages called FS52, one with an S-52W as the sub, the other with an SW-8MK2. The latter sub is designed by Andrew Jones but not the former. The two subs are remarkably different in their frequency responses. I don't know what Pioneer is thinking.

        S-52W: 24-1000 Hz, 150W
        SW-8MK2: 38-150 Hz, 100W

On specs alone, the AJ-designed SW-8MK2 would be more of a sub for movies than music.

        • Yes that would be it. Based on reviews the SW-8MK2 by AJ is quite average (also some reports of QC issues).
I am looking for a musical sub for a small room, as you probably already know.
(Earlier on I thought I could cut-corners by going cheaper & ported, as I would be using it at very low gain levels)
It seems the only decent sealed options are by Rel Acoustics, with Velodyne and Martin Logan offering great 8-inch sealed options as well.

I was considering Emotiva Basx S8 as a budget option (with port-plugged with low-density foam). But I think I will save up the money and do it once do it right with one of the sealed options mentioned above.

          • @thebadmachine: A small, sealed, musical subwoofer might not be possible due to physics. The size of the box affects the frequency response of a sub and a bad choice will introduce undesirable artifacts. Modern loudspeaker designers have benefitted tremendously thanks to Australian engineer and scientist A. Neville Thiele (ABC) and Richard H. Small (Sydney U) and computerized simulation software.

            • @alvian: Small room though, so I think 10-inch is the largest I am willing to go (if the price is close enough to 8-inch model). I seriously think going with 12-inch is overkill, and I will be spending too much for the power I require from it (also physical size).
I have also read adding a subwoofer can cause more complications / issues than without one. Nothing is without compromise.

An Emotiva engineer also stated their S10 (10-inch) model is the more (most) musical than the S8.

Thanks for the info though. You seem to be up-to-date on the info in this area.

  • Seems relatively expensive for a budget brand 8"

    • +1

Especially one that consumes 35 Watts and magically gives out 150 Watts @ 6 Ohm.

      • Yeah I wasn't gonna even bother commenting on the quoted figures…

Any manufacturer that rates speakers/audio gear with anything but the RMS figure at something like .01/.05% thd at 20hz to 20khz is probably lying….
