The rose gold sapphire edition is also reduced to $599

  • I was really hoping to 5s plus would be on sale too…

    • yeah, I would advice against getting the non plus versions, just HODL

  • $799 rrp is a bit steep…

  • Tempting but the S is just a bit too small for my wrist.

    • +1

Yeah, I agree - I'm after the S model for my wife (mothers day)

      • Ha! Touche…

Its all about me though.. my wife doesnt need a watch that she'll break/lose in the first week.

  • Why is this so expensive compared to Samsung watches or Apple series 3?

    • +1

Robust and a proper ABC watch.

      • +1

Very few people use ABC. Lucky to be 5%.

        • +6

And this is aimed at those who do…

          • +2

@porterble: Not really. It's typical of people wanting all the features these days.

Guaranteed people buy it over other models because of that functionality, but never use it.

It's just how people are now.

            • +1

              @shbshb: What is ABC watch?

            • @shbshb: Are those features reliable on these watches? I've got an ol solar Casio Protrek, still going strong, but I only occasionally use the compass because the altitude and barometer just seem way off for me. Luckily I'm not a "real" user of these features so I haven't tried to recalibrate it again for years.

              • @dufflover: Relatively, and its all relative anyway. But the Fenix 1 ABC was as accurate as my older Casio Pathfinder which was very well rated.

              • @dufflover: My fenix 3 is reliable most of the time but there have been occasions the compass has been off. I always carry a real one when I'm in the bush.

        • There's more than ABC, I love to use the all the different GPS types, tracks and specs/apps for everything but (profanity)
also, paywave on the plus is great too

    • It also supports ANT+ which means it integrates with all your bicycle sensors etc. Can also be used to turn your bike lights on when you start a ride!

  • Yowsers! That is a good price. Probably an indication that the next model is around the corner (I think they did similar deals with the fenix 3 that I snaffled at the time), but if you want a great deal on a high end model I'd be all over this.

    Not a touch screen btw!

  • Nice, thanks for that. Picked it up to replace my 235.

  • Was gonna get this but too bad no Garmin Pay… :-(

    • I just went in store and this price is not for the Sapphire model.

  • +1

    No Garmin pay no way

    • +3

A better option for sure but it's not $399.

    • +1

The black on black looks alot better too. Not a fan of the silver bezel on the 5S.

  • +1

only if it has Garmin pay…

  • Is this good for men? I read review that says this is aimed for women.

    • I got one (5S) last yr. Always felt a tad small. Gave it to wifey and got the Fenix 5. Way better fit for me and I have quite small wrists.
Since then have seen several 5S's on blokes….Nup, they just look too small.
      Get a 5 rather than 5S IMO.

      • Im an average sized bloke and the 5X+ looks fine too

  • Is this better than Apple Watch 3 as it also sells for $399?

    • +3

Complete different watch with different functions and purpose in my opinion.
If you're into fitness and want to track and record data for that, the Garmin is probably the way to go.
Apple Watch is more directed at having phone capabilities on your wrist than anything else - in my own personal opinion.

      • Apple watch is also for workplace where smart phones are forbidden

For any semi-serious runners, and at this price point, I would be looking at the new Garmin Forerunner 245 music. BUPA health fund members can get 20% off from the Garmin website so makes it $440.

For me the 245 pros are newer hardware, less weight (67gr for Fenix 5S vs 38.5gr), has music capability, Garmin seems to have added a lot of the higher end training features to the 245.

Cons - the 245 has no Garmin pay nor altimeter.

This is the BUPA link: https://buy.garmin.com/en-AU/AU/c10002-p1.html?cdncache=fals… could work for anyone, not sure.

    • Do you know if BUPA members can get 20% off the Forerunner 945 also?

      • Yes it's off all wearables

    • To add on to this, AIA Vitality members can get 25% off the 245M, making it $412.

  • +1

My Fenix 3 Sapphire, still going strong, I cant justify an upgrade yet. I am on my 3rd strap, but I love it. Wear it everyday, very robust!

  • With this watch, can I view like images, respond to text, see who is calling etc?

  • The Bupa members is good, but I still find 20% of RRP not enough. These things go way down the 35% or more of RRP when Garmin provides a help. This is why I'm still waiting the 5 plus go down…

    • I agree, but I don’t believe you’ll see anymore than 20% off the new forerunner 945 and 245 for some time. The discounts will be for the older ones.

      • As in Amazon.com.au? Of course they do…

    • Cashback?
