Curious to Know about Source of Income of Neighbour

Hello,

Posting this just out of my own curiosity.

I have one neighbour family in my apartment. The family comprises of a man, a woman and 1 kid. They rent the unit. Neither the man nor the woman go out for work. This is probably not surprising as many people do work from home now a days, but what is astonishing is that they go out for marketing quite often. Apparently, they do not have to work to earn a living.

I am curious what can be the source of income for such families. Can a family survive only with Centrelink funding?

Of course, inherited property can be an option. Just curious to know.

Hopefully they don't go over to OP's house and use it as a film set when they are at work all day

As above^ What does going out for marketing mean

    • Multilevel marketing (MLM) is also a possibility - Norwex, Amway/A2K etc just to name a few. There are thousands of them nowadays, and despite ignorant myths to the contrary (that they're all pyramid schemes, ponzis, cons, etc), they're letter-of-the-law legal, legit businesses distributing millions in profit share (though views on ethics vary wildly, and anecdotally most people who've tried and failed leave with a bad aftertaste). People with a big enough network often don't 'work' anymore, but go around at night helping their 'downline' build up their own networks. I had a couple of friends in Sydney in A2K who retired from 'jobs' in their 30's. Their 'work' now looks like doing whatever they want during the day and going out around 6-9pm each night to host/help info sessions. Don't know that many make it that big, but have seen it happen first hand with friends and acquaintances.

We gave it a shot and built a decent size team with friends, but had to move interstate and gave it away. I respect the idea, if done right. The key is find like-minded people, have a thick skin, and don't badger the unwilling.

    How about you ask them?

    Otherwise mind your own business?

Most suggestions here will be troll/joke comments ahem Spackbace…and if any of them happened to be correct, how would you ever know?

Hey hey hey mine was a possible option

Isn't that all we're being asked for, options?

I mean they could be competitive gamers, we don't know!

One could perceive a comment as trolling, others could perceive it as insightful.

They could be working from home
    They could be lotto winners
    They could have an inheritance
They could have worked and saved high end jobs or sold a business and are now living off that money

The only real answer would be to ask them

OP, what do you do for a living?

You appear to not work, and have plenty of time to watch every movement your neighbours make…

That's exactly what my neighbour thinks of me. I WFH often; conference call while doing laundries in balcony is my speciality! But sadly I dont do marketing often, whatever that means.

When I go out for marketing usually it's just to impress my nosey neighbours.

  • they go the the markets?

go out for marketing quite often

I think going marketing is a term used in certain parts of the world for going shopping! Probably derived from the activity of going to the market?

    • That's what I thought. Makes sense, everyone knows that shopping means going to the shops (whether physical or online).

    • yeah that's what I thought, going to the market?

This thread has made me self-conscious that my neighbours are judging me now, every time I go out marketing.

    • +1

I feel like the postie judges me as to how many parcels I get. I feel like saying MATE THESE ARE ALL BARGAINS but he probably thinks I am a rich douchebag. Damnit those shoes were $30!

  • What’s to say they both don’t work during the day once you’ve already left for work? Or night shifts when you’re sleeping?

I have a radiologist mate who rarely puts pants on and lives in a very nice apartment. Wife doesn't work and he has one kid.

If that's him, just ask him about his job, he is pretty down to earth. He gets alerts on his phone to check the cloud when new images require immediate examination. He makes bank because he is a contractor.

  • I had neighbours that didn't work for about 10 years.
The were from mainland china and in their late 30s/early 40s. The husband had medical issues. The wife chose not to work. They were both funded by parents back home and investments.

We were having a coffee one day and the wife expressed her desire for both kids to be doctors / lawyers and I commented that having never seen their parents work, the kids may have trouble understanding the requirements of holding down a high pressure, full-time job and doing a 40+ hours week. Something must have struck home as she did a childcare course and got a job at the local daycare.
