L & P Plate Holders

A friend has recently received his provisional license after returning to live in Aus & wanted to know whether L & P plate holders - Super Cheap Auto and Repco - are better than magnetic plates?

I recall losing quite a number of magnetic L & P plates as they would just fly off, especially when driving on freeways/motorways however this was over 10 years ago. Have they improved their magneticity since then?

  • Interesting, NSW can't use these?

  • hmmmm … Vic & WA specific - does anyone know why?

    • Plates look different depending on state.

P plates VIC have a coloured square with white P on them.

In NSW you have a white square with a coloured letter. I think they also have a small number indicating max speed

I think it's more to do with those plates being designed to be stuck to the inside of a window - which is not allowed in NSW

        https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/geared/your_licence/keeping_your_…

L and P plates have to be attached to the OUTSIDE of the car – you can't stick the plates on the inside of your window.
Penalty: 2 demerit points and a fine.

        • Aha - window display being the reason for the perforated plate. Thanks geech

Don't use magnet type, it will ruin your car's body paint in the heat of summer. It melted on my old car years ago.

    • Good point - mine never stayed on long enough to do any damage so this is good to know. Thanks Yummy

  • You could use a vinyl sticker? It won’t damage your paint, it’ll actually protect your paint, when you peel the plates off for good two years later the paint under the sticker will be noticibly two years less faded by the sun and elements. Driving lesson cars use these kind of stickers.

    • That must look awesome when you take the plates off …

    • lol

Thanks AustriaBargain for pointing out the the bonus 'paint protection' feature here

People on ozbargain are so nice, always wanting to get good advice for their friends.

  • My magnetic plate hasn't came off. It's yellowed a little from weathering, I replaced it and it's worn out again.
I haven't used these types in the links. Looks like a bit of hassle, screws and everything.

    • Totally agree Sage re: holders. You've done well with the magnetic plates.

  • I'm on my Ps now. I got a set of magnetic plates for $2.80 from Daiso. I've driven in all sorts of weather conditions and they have never fallen off.

    • Thanks robotfrom1984 - that's a great price from Daiso.
