The Fresh Australian…..'Made in China at a FDA Approved Factory'

In Sydney, there are whole suburbs of Fresh Australians like that.

    A skillet re-seasoned, is a skillet reborn.

    Words to live by.

    • +1

      It's basically my mantra.

  • how does this compare to lodge?

    • +9

Both made from melted down Soviet tanks.

      • +1

Cast iron is relatively brittle material. Not suitable for building tanks.

        • +3

That's what they realize finally, so end up here …

Bought similar 28cm Cast Iron Skillet in similar box from Aldi for $7.95 (on clearance) a few months back. 5 year warranty.
    I find it too big & heavy. I couldn't handle a 30cm😀

Can't imagine there would be much difference apart from 2cm to warrant the much higher price.

save on gym membership for upper body workout :)

      • Welcome to my Cast Iron Kitchen Gym💪

Must buy another, to balance the workout my right arm gets with the weight of this.

Cast iron casserole bowls for leg day.

      "I find it too big & heavy. I couldn't handle a 30cm"

      That's what she said.

      Sorry couldn't help it…

      • You are forgiven😀

  • +2

Probably safer to spend the extra $7.50 on Lodge

    • -3

      You mean 47.50 right ?

    • edit: do not buy this, buy the skillet linked by docians instead - even better deal and no reason to buy this deal.

  • +3

OP where is this skillet made in?

Why would I not buy this instead?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Lodge-Skillet-Pre-Seasoned-Skillet…

which is made in the USA

currently $42.75 includes silicone handle holder, which itself retails for around $10

  • Bought this exact one last year for $29 on a lightning deal. Works perfectly after seasoning it again (always season first, regardless of whether or not they claim to be pre-seasoned). Cast iron is basically just cast iron, give or take. My old man's been using no namebrand one perfectly for 30 years that he found in a camping store. Just look after it, and don't let it rust.

Better get the Benzer from Victoria's basement.

Great for finishing off sous vide steaks.

    • -1

If you can't cook a steak properly on the BBQ, you are better off flash sealing both sides in a super hot cast iron pan on the stovetop and then chuck the whole lot in the oven to finish.

      • +2

not sure why you're comparing sous vide to bbq cooking
two different methods with two different end results

cooking a thick steak on a bbq, even reverse seared, wont end up with the same internal cooked consistency of sous vide

        • Thanks for responding for me. You obviously know what you're talking about when it comes to cooking steak.

          • +1

@gasman70: I've been known to cook a steak or two ;)

Reverse seared rib eye on a Kamado Joe is my idea of tasty ;)

            • @SBOB: A BBQ-cooked or ‘low cooked’, reverse-seared steak is a wonderful thing but I can’t stop using the sous vide these days. Best steaks I’ve ever eaten, although they look pretty grim before they hit the pan.

Might have to give the reverse sear another go though.

Hi all, my wife has been asking me to buy a cast iron pan set to replace our non-stick because the coating is carcinogenic. Is this or a Lodge or an Aldi good options? We only cook a couple of nights a week, but want to cook and keep my wife happy :) Cheers!

    • +2

get aldi… i had access to both (this one and Aldi) … cant tell the difference.

      • +2

The base surface of my aldi's cast iron pan isnt as smooth as my Lodge.

        • is a smooth base important? easier to clean a smoother base I guess?

          • +1

@panamawhisky: Smooth base makes virtually zero difference. I own both, both seem to be equally non-stick, and equally easy to clean

    • Does anybody have a link to the Aldi one ?

    • What about an enameled cast iron? I picked up a nice one in Harris Scarfe for about $30 couple years back still going well, no cracks in the enamel or anything and a lot easier to manage than just normal cast iron especially if just using couple times a week imo.

  • Worth a watch, all about what cookware materials to avoid. Cast iron is good.
