Travel Pack

Hi,

I am going travelling to europe for 6 months and I am buying a pack, instead of a suitcase.

The one I have my eye on is the Deuter traveller 70+10

My friend bought it, and I really liked the look of it, so I want to get one.

Here's the thing, he went into Anaconda to buy it (9 months ago maybe, maybe a bit more), paid 260,

I went in today, and it's 400. Sigh.

Does anyone know where I can get one for a more reasonable price?

For six month trip I would recommend the Osprey Meridian wheeled backpack - your shoulders and back will thank you.

    • That's awesome!

I looked on gumtree earlier, but did not find this for some reason, thanks very much for that!

Fingers crossed that s/he still has it

    • Osprey Meridian?

I see what you mean, any particular reason?

Not sure if you had a different impression, but I will not be doing any hiking or hitchhiking for that matter.

It will be simply used as a suitcase. I will be travelling by bus or plane or taxi, whatever…

I guess I should ask, I can see the obvious advantage but are there any disadvantages of a pack like the one that you suggested over say, the Deuter that I am looking at?

      • If you are not really hiking etc I don't see why you just don't get a pull around case.
I had something similiar to the Osprey Meridian and I can tell you those things are only good on your back for a short amount of time (the frame of the wheels makes it a pain); hence I just ended up pulling it around with me. It worked fine, but for the extra i paid for the back pack straps and didn;t really use it wasn't worth it.
I suggest you get a pull around case - one with good wheels and handle, save your back.
In the end i ended up strapping on packs for other people who couldnt carry their own packs on their backs.
Oh yeah reason i didn;t really end up putting it on my back as well it takes a bit of time to 'convert' hence was faster using the side handle to lug it up stairs etc.

    • It was gone, thanks anyway! might get it brand new from the other website

  • what do you guys think of buying on off ebay,

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Deuter-Traveller-70-10-titan-anth…

from germany, so should be genuine?

not sure about postage, but surely it should not take more than a month?

    • The ebay listing also says that VAT is included in the listed price. Do I still have to pay VAT if it is going to a different country? Is it possible that it will become cheaper?

I know Amazon sometimes do this??

  • I would recommend you look at the MEI Voyager.

They have been made by the same guy in California since the 70s.

They are carry on sized, meaning no lost luggage. They are meant to be very comfortable, but I haven't tried one yet.

I have just ordered one for my next trip though, as from experience, backpacking with a large bag and having to check your bags at every flight gets tedious.

You can buy them here (original site:

    And here (reseller i think):

Review here (also a great site for info on what to take OS):

But, ignoring my opinion (which I am aware may be useless for you), check out sierra trading post for much cheaper prices on all things backpacking (not sure if they stock this bag though). amazon.com is frequently cheaper than local stores for gear as well, but not everything can be sent here.

    • interesting idea, carry on-able, but not sure that it is big enough for me.

Also had a look at amazon and sierra, and neither had that particular one as listed

  • If you are travelling during the summer months in Europe, you can travel very lightly providing you are not camping and you are mainly staying in hostels. I traveled through europe for months with a sports bag.

    Travel light.

Some tips: Tshirts are inexpensive, don't bring anything that you'll regret throwing away/losing. Buy and throw as you go. Buy quick dry undies, socks and a blanket, you can wash them in the sink at the hostel and they'll be ready the next morning. Bring a few pairs of normal ones as well of course. Buy compression thermals, they're cheap and they regulate your body temperature. Bring a wind breaker. Bring a pair of jeans or 2 and something to sleep in.

I'd say you can even go without a computer, there are plenty of net cafes about. Bring a 2.5" ext hdd and you can download photos onto that at the cafe. Mind you, a netbook isn't that heavy.

You can go without a lot, that pack looks like serious overkill if you're only doing europe.

    • Having your own netbook is handy for several reasons:

If your computer is well maintained and virus free, you can do secure transactions on the road. This makes it easier to book accommodation and travel while on the road, so you can change your plans on the fly. You can also top up your 28degrees card if need be.

You don't have to fight with the other hostelers for the Internet terminal.

WiFi is free in many places while there may be a charge for Internet terminals.

You can entertain yourself with it, load it with music, movies, etc.

It can backup your camera's photos.

      On the other hand:

A netbook is more weight: 1 to 1.25 kg.

Another thing to watch against theft, etc.

  • long shot but if your traveling through Vietnam…in hanoi they got North Face like backpacks all over the place that are exactly the same as original but just not made of the super expensive material. I picked up a 100+20L for $15AUD! Its pretty strong and has all the extra pockets, 2 x detachable bags, backcover to hide away straps and double stitched.
