Why So Serious?

The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

Amazon and JB are in a bit of a price war on 4K Blu-rays and are aggressively price-matching each other.

JB has a Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal, and Dark Knight is included. If you find two other 24.98 4k disks you want, you get the third free, and the price per disc is 16.65 - this explains Amazon's price match at 16.66.

I have bought around 30 4k discs recently - due to this price war which stems from JB's buy 2 get 1 free offer, and the prices at Amazon and JB were all identical at the time of purchase - I checked them all in store on my phone. JB drops a price temporarily and it's in this deal, Amazon drops theirs to 2/3 of the JB price to account for JB's buy 2 get one offer.

JB is a pain because you have to buy them in 3s and you need to buy equally priced groups of 3 to get the full benefit - but it is nice to be able to browse in the shop as the selection is really quite good - and you get instant gratification as long as you can force yourself to buy in threes.

Also, Amazon won't price match after the fact - I learned the hard way. I bought several discs from Amazon last week at $16 and when they lowered the prices to $13.33 for a few days to match JB (all the Harry Potter discs were going for $20 at JB with buy 2 get 1, for example, or $13.33 each - sadly they are now back to three for $50 rather than 3 for $40) I had to do a return and repurchase - and it cost me $7 return postage. That is a downside with Amazon in times of fluctuating prices - at JB I could have returned the unopened discs for free.

Anyway, there are a few deals where one store is better than the other (e.g. recent Planet Earth 2 on Amazon, Deadpool 1/2 exclusive combo deal for $40 at JB) but many of them are the same price at both if you get the BTGOF deal at JB. Good time to be in the 4K Blu-ray market.

(BTW I am just a dude who likes movies and I like both JB and Amazon so no axe to grind here.)

  • If only they added an atmos mix

  • Itunes store has the trilogy (4k without atmos) for $19.99 for those not wanting discs

  • So i opened the real 4k vs fake 4k link - its interesting

Why are all those movies fake 4k? that website has limited information

    • there are lot of upscaled versions (mastered in 2K or 1080p then upscaled) being marketed as real 4K(native 2160p). However not sure how authentic the claim is.
