    gassed?

    • +2

Well as bananas produce ethylene gas, & ethylene ripens bananas, all bananas are gassed🍌

      • -3

        Not the point

        • +6

So, what was the point of an incomprehensible comment of "gassed?"

Is it just that my comment is not what you wanted to read?
          I grow bananas 🍌

As these bananas have likely been sitting around over Easter, they will be ripening in their boxes (with their own gases). So they need to be cleared fast.

@INFIDEL: They would taste crap. I get mine farm direct, north coast nsw.

            • +1

              @[Deactivated]: You're awesome

            • @[Deactivated]: Many factors affecting taste. Long distance transportation is a major factor.

I'm waiting for mine to begin to ripen before harvest. As long as they're not eaten on the plant…

Of course for selling, getting fruit to market before too many others, means harvesting early to get better price to cover costs.

At these prices, it's not worth trying at the moment. Transportation, agents fees, etc means farmers will be losing money.

And, stores want ripe & undamaged fruit, at low cost…
"To protect the fruit from damage during transport, fruit is harvested at “commercial maturity”, which is a hard green, but mature stage, before ripening has started. After arrival at the destination, the fruit is ripened under controlled conditions. Fruit is placed into specially constructed ripening rooms and brought to an optimum ripening temperature and humidity – a release of ethylene gas is used to trigger the natural ripening process to achieve uniform appearance and quality of ripe fruit." https://www.uq.edu.au/news/article/2012/11/new-technology-re…

It's an issue of long transportation & need for uniform & saleable ripe fruit, etc that drives those commercial concerns to use gas. Sending ripe bananas on long journey will not likely result in saleable fruit.

So good to support farmers & get better tasting fruit as you do. But you will be paying so much more… & still involves long transportation.

Grow your own😉 (Bananas can grow outside in cooler areas, but may not fruit. I've seen them growing in Hobart & taught how to create micro-climates for growing bananas etc in Adelaide.)

Better to eat local food in season, rather than food transported long distances.

My fruit is just outside my winfow, so no transportation & commercial issues. Tastes bloody good 🍌

@INFIDEL: Strange coincidence, there's a new Freakonomics podcast on Bananas this week. Very interesting!

                • @Ulysses31: Thanks👍 (Did Julian leak this?)

Interesting podcast - from rarely seen expensive luxury to cheap staple that is 4th major crop in the world… (I didn't know that)🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

With corruption & exploitation, CIA backed coup d'etat, US monopoly, banana republics, diseases (I'm trained to identify Bunchy Top), economics (why are bananas so cheap?), how the Cavendish became the big banana, how that is a major threat to the future of the banana, locally genetic edited bananas to combat that (but will consumers accept that to keep bananas in stores?)…

It's got the lot, except sex (modern bananas are sterile🍌)😉

(all our bananas are genetically modified from ancient stock, to remove the woody seeds & make them genetically identical to others of that variety)

                • @Ulysses31: The old banana recipe mentioned in the podcast (peeled banana with mustard, wrapped in a slice of ham, baked in a cream sauce) would not work well with usual bananas, which would become a sweet sticky mush. No wonder it was not liked.

I suspect the recipe comes from African (or Latin American) origins. So a better alternative is the Plantain used in recipes there.
It looks like & may be referred to as a banana, but is starchy rather than sweet & needs to be cooked, tasting a bit like a potato. So that recipe doesn't seem unusual if thought of as baked ham & 'potato' in a cream sauce! Yum😋

I've grown & cooked them - often roasted in embers of an open fire (as you would with potato & sweet potato), peeling off the skin to eat. Can also use unripe bananas, Bunya nuts, etc 🍌

      Read all about it!

  • Still available?

  • Does anyone know the reason behind such cheap price ? Surely they are not making any money on this …

    • Bananas are cut and shipped green well in advance and ripen on the way, damage easily in transport and don't freeze or refrigerate well. Apples can be kept in the fridge where unsold bananas will perish in a few days. Some apples in supermarkets are a year old or more. Bananas are cut unripe, not too much can be done to slow ripening but if needed they can be gassed to promote ripening.

    • Discussed above & in other banana posts.
Likely overordered by shops or market. Boxes may have been sitting too long over public holidays, ripening or sweating. So need to be cleared quickly before it goes in bin.
