3G only on Telstra network. Check coverage before you buy. If cannot connect to will run down the battery by keep trying.

    • Not sure why you negged the deal?

Seems like a good deal for those looking for the device. The website makes it very clear to check coverage and even lists the providers that operate on the 3G bands that it supports.

Also the subscription is for iOS $6 for 2 devices per month $9 per month for 5 devices.

It is a niche product that fits a particular market segment.

Coupled with the Boost deal starting tomorrow for $11.25 per month for Telstra coverage.

    • The product isn't for you != valid neg.
3G covers a larger expanse of Australia, does it not? My technical knowledge leads me to believe that the lower frequencies of 3G fares better than 4G, and therefore 4G would actually use more battery in struggling coverage.

      • Telstra 4G Band 28 = 700MHz no voice unless your phone does VoLTE
Telstra 3G = (mostly) 850MHz = ubiquitous coverage in Oz

  • Got the Alcatel Move kids watch on a $15 ($5 for watch itself and other $10 for the SIM card) plan a month (over 36 months) for 1GB of data and unlimited phone calls. Got it from Vodafone.

Outright it's like $180 for the watch itself. Works great, can track using GPS thru the app etc.

Better than this deal for sure.

    • Pretty poor review of the Alcatel watch here https://www.smh.com.au/technology/keep-watch-over-your-kids-…

The Spacetalk watch is designed in Australia and 100% supported within Australia with any data stored on Australian servers. Alcatel is part of the Nokia group, so not Australian - not sure where their support comes from?

      • Yep the setup process can be a bit of a pain but once setup it's fine. Why the writer of that article is whining it's twice the thickness of Apple Watch is beyond me.

My six year old uses it to call family when out and about, and the GPS tracking in the app works flawlessly.

If someone wants to pay double the price for the Spacetalk, then go ahead. The Alcatel does the job and does it well for what I need.

Alcatel is part of TCL not Nokia, so yes support might be a bit shitehouse but once again what's the chances of it failing? Doesn't the Spacetalk also require a monthly subscription cost which the Alcatel doesn't?

I understand the whole wanting to keep data on Australian servers, but you could also say th same for google, Xiaomi, whatever brand. I don't buy into that tinfoil hat stuff, I just get on with my life.

    • Whispers are that the spacetalk will be available through Telstra on similar plans sometime this year.

  • FYI, another brand was recently shown to be have security vulnerabilities.
    https://amp.smh.com.au/technology/i-would-never-buy-one-fear…

This one claims to be more secure, but I’m no expert.

Also read that some schools are banning smart watches for kids (due to cheating during tests). I know these have less functionality but dont think teachers are going to check the watch model.

Just food for thought. As a parent, I was also keen at one point, but I think we can live without this.

    • As a parent, I was also keen at one point, but I think we can live without this.

I feel like the product basically speaks to people's irrational fears than preventing any real risk. There was an episode of Black Mirror that tackled this particular topic by going a bit further which was scary yet seemingly more likely as time goes by. At the end of the day though people need to do whatever makes them happy and if this helps them with their separation anxiety that's a good thing I suppose. And I guess there will be scenarios where something like this would be very helpful.

      $299+ongoing costs though, seems expensive.

This just means the company is ticking all the right boxes, not that their software does not have a vulnerability…yet.

These watches appeal to parents with kids with special needs.
Good deal and I got one.

    • Good to hear some positive feedback, cheers Fitzwah. Is it a recent purchase or something you've had for a while now?

      • +1

I'm waiting on delivery, but I've done my research and this seems the best fit for my kid.
I think the benefits outweigh the cost for piece of mind, especially with special needs kids.

        • +1

Hope the device gives you the peace of mind.

    Considered this like others have.

$299 (regular sale price) + monthly app charge + Sim charge just seemed a bit rediculous.

Ended up utilising an old phone + $10 monthly sim. Kids only take the phone when needed and planned.

  • Absolute rip off these things.

You can buy a decent one for around 50 off Gearbest that can do all this and more. I got one about 2 years ago, called the DW09, generic as (profanity), same frame as one I got for 10 bucks a few months before that too.

It has 3G for calls and texts (yes, you can actually send messages on it, surprisingly responsive screen), a 2MP camera, decent enough speaker, Bluetooth, WiFi, and access to the full Google Play Store running a version of Android 4.4 Kit Kat. I had San Andreas running on it fine. I mean, shit to control, but it ran it fine. Half a gig of RAM is more than enough for a watch after all. Only downside is there was no Micro SD port.

When they target this sort of shit and big button phones to idiot parents / kids and seniors it drives me nuts. So many better options out there.

Edit: Sorry, I meant QW09. DZ09 is a lot cheaper, doesn't run Android, and only does 2G. Still a fun toy, but as far as a comparable product to the deal is concerned, it is not. The QW09 on the other hand, is perfectly comparable for a fraction of the price.

    • thanks for the heads up. Just checked out the QW09, looks impressive.

How has the unit been going for you after 2 years and how long does the battery last?

      • Well, unfortunately a few months ago it fell out of the car and got run over, doesn't work so good these days.

Buuuut before that it was great. Calls were nice and clear, apps worked fine (only thing I used a lot though was Messenger, to send photos I'd take on it off). I used the camera a lot back when I was doing placement at a kinder for my diploma course, we'd have to take a lot of photos of the kids during the activities and stuff we set up for them, and every time you go to get the centre's iPad they would lose interest or pull a face or go hide or whatever, but sneaking a quick pic with the camera on here was a life saver honestly.

Battery wise if you're just leaving it be all day, you'll get a good day's use out of it. If you wanna play an intensive game like the aforementioned Grand Theft Auto, expect half an hour and bring a charger with you. I did play some basic shit like Flappy Bird and the mobile Rayman games (great on it by the way, fantastic time killer) and they were a lot more forgiving.

On an average day at placement I would take 20 odd photos, play half an hour or so of games, check my Facebook and shit (I had my SIM in here and didn't bring my real phone), and finally play some music through Bluetooth headphones (yes, we are in the future now, my watch sends music to my wireless earphones) on the 20 odd minute bike ride home and I'd usually make it home with 20 odd percent left give or take. It's surprisingly decent in short.

        • Awesome review. Thanks for that. Did you ever think of getting spare batts?

          • -1

@highon2str: Well I already had a DZ09 and they use the same frame and screen and everything, including batteries. So if you were hunting for another battery, I'd be inclined to say grab one of those cheaper watches for around 10/15 because I can't imagine buying a battery on it's own would be much cheaper. Then you got a fun toy for the kiddo or a gift to give, etc.

    • -6

Again, product not right for you != a valid neg.

The alternatives you have mentioned have zero Australian support, lack the AllMyTribe app and its feature set.

      • +1

The QW09 works fine in Australia, I've only used it in Australia, it is supported fine in Australia.

        I don't know what AllMyTribe is, but I can't imagine it's worth 300 bucks on it's own.

Valid reason for neg. Shit product. Shit price. Shit deal. Hence I called it shit with my neg. Except I didn't just call it shit, I pointed y'all to a better, cheaper product as well. You're welcome.

Anything is technically eligible to be called a deal. Me selling my house for 50 bucks less than advertised is technically a bargain, but it's still a shit deal that doesn't deserve to be on here wasting space and taking attention from better deals.

Watch is over priced and shit. Got negged. The end. Don't need to be so defensive.

Edit: Also, I just looked up AllMyTribe. You gotta pay a monthly subscription for that. Your shit deal somehow gets worse.

        • -2

          Who's the defensive one? 🙄

The point of the watch is completely lost on you. Move on warrior.

          • @iMagoo: You, my dude. You got shot down, you had to resort to misinformation to try to defend your deal. Then you got shit on again and get snarky.

300 for a watch. And then 6 to 9 bucks a month to use an app on it, is not a good deal when you can get the same thing for 60, and MANY MANY MANY free alternative apps that don't cost up to over another hundred a year to use.

It's a shit watch, it's a shit price, you've got a much better option pointed out to you, if you wanna go waste your money, go for it.

            • -1

@TheDukeOfNukem: I wasn't shot down, I simply chose to not argue with someone who has wool over his eyes. Alas, I'm baited anyway.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Sure they're both smart watches, but they're completely different markets with a completely different set of intentions.

Your suggested alternative is simply a smart watch, a cheaper one at that.

What part of my comment was misinformation? The alternative you listed has ZERO Australian support. It's a Chinese import, any issues with it and you cannot contact an AUSTRALIAN company to remedy.

The main ideas behind Spacetalk are:
1- GPS and SOS functionality for concerned parents + other feature sets provided by AllMyTribe
              2- Dust and water resistance
3- A controlled ecosystem preventing installation of social media and other unnecessary applications for a child
4- Simple and easy to use

As I said, apples and oranges for different markets (young children vs. keyboard warriors, apparently). I've barely said anything nor taken the stabs that you have and somehow I'm the defensive and snarky one (must be that misinformation hey?). You've taken the opportunity to pick a fight, I hope you have it out of your system. Glad to see that my deal post got a rise out of you, but it is time you move on champ.

              • +1

@iMagoo: And all of 1,2,3,4 points the Alcatel watch from Vodafone does. All without monthly sub fee just for using the watch.

        • If the QW09 had GPS tracking it would be a winner for me. Do you know if any watches do in that Android space?

          • +1

@adrianhughes1998: Not really my thing honestly, I'm not a watch guy, I just really wanted to mess around with these things a couple years back. The QW09 does have GPS and location tracking though as every Android seems to these days, so you can have access to Google Maps and the sort out the gate preinstalled IIRC. Beyond that, there'd be plenty of free apps that would rock the tracker, but I don't have any particular recommendations, no.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Thanks mate. Good point, totally forgot that you can use Find My Device thru Google to see GPS usage. Kinda bummed now that I got the Alcatel watch for me kid.

Then again it's still hundreds cheaper than the Spacetalk that's being spruiked here 😂

Spare old iPhone/Android with groupon 6 months unlimited plan

    Total cost $5

    • -6

      🙄

    • +1

Again, this is apples and oranges. The main thing I would say about giving the child a phone is that you then lose control over what they do with that phone. There's nothing stopping them from installing social media, games with micro transactions or other nasties. That phone is also a separate entity to them that can be left anywhere.

I understand that the device somewhat goes against the Ozbargain mentality of using the cheapest alternative, but the post I have offered is 14.3% cheaper than its regular price. You may not agree with or understand the need, but what I have posted is the best price for a product that some (e.g. special needs children as mentioned by Fitzwah ) may find helpful.

If you don't agree with the product then simply move onto another deal.

      • +1

I was just pointing out a cheaper alternative.

On a side note you are able to uninstall safari and not allow access to App Store to install apps.

        • +1

Fair enough, I'm not familiar with the iOS ecosystem so I can't comment on how easy it is to lock down 😊

  • +1

There are apps and steps you can take to restrict Android app based usage and to put restrictions in place, before you hand the Android smart watch over to your kid.

    • And for the technologically inclined, that's great. There's a bit of work involved to get it to that point and some may struggle.

Which of those watches are going to have manufacturers that will help you get the watch into that state?

Which of those watches/applications installed will be storing the data with best practice cyber security techniques, in Australia?

  • @TheDukeOfNukem do you have any sample images from the QW09 that you are able to share? A camera is what's missing from many of the local watch models. Would be handy for kids to have and use in school to take pictures of school projects and other events that parents miss out on.
