I wonder what will be posted first, something about an ~$800 device that makes butter from nuts not being a bargain, or that nuts don't contain nipples therefore they can't produce 'milk'.

      • Neither!

Friggin' $800!?! Sacre bleu. Thought it was another $50 impulse-buy to join the chocolate fountain buried behind the tuppaware after one use.

Interesting product. I have a question about the % of nut in a nut milk.

If you look at the ingredients of your average nut milk, taking Vitasoy as an example, it claims a minimum of 3.8% of whole almonds in their 1 litre .

    https://soy.com.au/product/almond-milk-unsweetened/

Based on the instructions above, 475grams of nuts into 2 litres of water is about 19% nut composition (475/ 475g nuts + 2,000g water).

That seems like a much higher nut:water ratio compared to the commercial product. Is the nut milk going to be chunkous? Are commercial producers ripping people off?

    Further musing:

Using a 19% nut composition and paying around $13 per kg of almonds (woolworths spot price), you'll end up paying the same price as the commercial product (when it's on special)

1kg nuts at $13 per kg 5 litres of nut milk (using, 1kg of nuts + 4 litres of water) = $2.60 per litre
    - $13/5 litres

BUT, if you are able to only use around 3.8% of nuts, you'd recoup the cost of the machine much more quickly! Using 5% to make calculations a little easier:

1kg nuts at 13 per kg = 21 litres of nut milk (using, 1kg grams of nuts + 20 litres of water) = 60 cents per litre
    - $13/21 litres

(Yes I'm procrastinating at the moment!)

    • Bonus points if someone else who is procrastinating can calculate how long it will take to recoup the cost of the machine, based on x number of commercial cartons used per week, etc etc.

Assuming your previous calculations are correct.
Assuming Vitasoy Almond Milk Unsweetened purchased from Woolworths and not on sale (ie $3/L).
Assuming 2x cartons per week (ie. 2L/week).

        Savings per week = ($3x2)-($0.6x2) = ($6)-($1.2) = $4.8/week.

        No. of Weeks to recoup cost = ($809+$9.95) / $4.8 = ($818.95)/$4.8 = 171 weeks (rounded up to nearest whole weeks) ~= 3.3 years.

Lots of other scenarios could be checked ie % of nuts used, type of nuts, how many L of "milk" are used per week, etc.

        Did I win!?

Awesome! Yes, bonus points for you!

We can't assume my calculations are correct, but at least it's a start right?

It would be a tense third year of nut milk making hoping that the machine doesn't break after a reasonable warranty period (2 years) has passed.

    • or use existing blender or ninja to blitz the nuts in question, add water and filter through cheese cloths. I make chinese soy milk and we bring to boil (be careful, they boil and overlow very quickly) and simmer on low heat for hours (longer taste better).

I don't want my nuts processed

    • But how could you not want "fully-made nut milk?"

  • Does it make rice milk, too? We use a lot of rice milk.

  • I am intrigued by the product but would be way more keen on seeing the results first. $800 is a lot for an appliance that likely will have limited usage before being shelved and evolving into a dust collector.

    • before being shelved

I probably wouldn't want to use it much after that either.

  • A second hand Thermomix in excellent shape costs around $1k and can do this and plenty more…

  • Vitamix can do it as well plus a lot of other things to boot.
